OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the effects of aerobic exercise training without dietary changes on cardiovascular and metabolic variables and on the expression of glucose transporter Type 4 in rats with metabolic syndrome. METHODS: Twenty male spontaneously hypertensive rats received monosodium glutamate during the neonatal period. The animals were allocated to the following groups: MS (sedentary metabolic syndrome), MS-T (trained on a treadmill for 1 hour/day, 5 days/week for 10 weeks), H (sedentary spontaneously hypertensive rats) and H-T (trained spontaneously hypertensive rats). The Lee index, blood pressure (tail-cuff system), insulin sensitivity (insulin tolerance test) and functional capacity were evaluated before and after 10 weeks of training. Glucose transporter Type 4 expression was analyzed using Western blotting. The data were compared using analysis of variance (ANOVA) (

Abstract

Background

Although exercise training has well-known cardiorespiratory and metabolic benefits, low compliance with exercise training programs is a fact, and the harmful effects of physical detraining regarding these adaptations usually go unnoticed. We investigated the effects of exercise detraining on blood pressure, insulin sensitivity, and GLUT4 expression in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY).

Methods

Studied animals were randomized into sedentary, trained (treadmill running/5 days a week, 60 min/day for 10 weeks), 1 week of detraining, and 2 weeks of detraining. Blood pressure (tail-cuff system), insulin sensitivity (kITT), and GLUT4 (Western blot) in heart, gastrocnemius and white fat tissue were measured.

Results

Exercise training reduced blood pressure (19%), improved insulin sensitivity (24%), and increased GLUT4 in the heart (+34%); gastrocnemius (+36%) and fat (+22%) in SHR. In WKY no change in either blood pressure or insulin sensitivity were observed, but there was an increase in GLUT4 in the heart (+25%), gastrocnemius (+45%) and fat (+36%) induced by training. Both periods of detraining did not induce any change in neither blood pressure nor insulin sensitivity in SHR and WKY. One-week detraining reduced GLUT4 in SHR (heart: -28%; fat: -23%) and WKY (heart: -19%; fat: -22%); GLUT4 in the gastrocnemius was reduced after a 2-week detraining (SHR: -35%; WKY: -25%). There was a positive correlation between GLUT4 (gastrocnemius) and the maximal velocity in the exercise test (r = 0.60, p = 0.004).

Conclusions

The study findings show that in detraining, despite reversion of the enhanced GLUT4 expression, cardiorespiratory and metabolic beneficial effects of exercise are preserved.</p

Objective: To analyze the impact of Pilates practice on balance and postural strategies in the elderly.Materials and Methods: This is an intervention study, which included 14 el-derly, whose balance was assessed by Computerized Dynamic Posturography, including sensory organization tests (SOT), divided into six conditions, and postural strategies (condition I to VI) and neural systems that control balance (visual, vestibular and soma-tosensory) were analyzed. The elderly practiced Pilates exercises over 8 weeks, twice a week, for approximately 50 to 60 minutes. Results: There was an increase in the use of postural ankle strategies in the conditions: II (p = 0.04) and VI (p = 0.01), post intervention. However, SOT sensory conditions and neural systems that control balance did not change post intervention. Conclusions: The practice of the Pilates method contributed to the improvement of the use of postural strategies in the elderly and, consequently, can reduce the risk of falling in them. However, there was no significant difference on SOT and neural systems, and we suggest that a longer period of time is need to get more sig-nificant effects on these outcomes

Project management has a wide field of study, but its implementation in Public Universities is still recent. In order to support project management, as well as to improve the methodology and management tools, this study aimed to identify which are the models of Project Management Offices – PMO’s, existing in Brazilian Federal Universities. From the theoretical review, the office model was chosen by performance level and its attributions. After conducting a mapping based on data from the Ministry of Education and from the Universities websites, the existence of 20 Offices was identified, present in 14 of the 63 Federal Universities in Brazil. It was verified that most of the offices has a more technical than strategic action, being more connected to certain units or areas of the Universities, such as Engineering or Computing. The study provides evidence that most Brazilian Universities still do not use the PMO’s, and demonstrates that they could improve their performance if they adopted these units in their administrative structures, at the operational levels and especially at the strategic level.Project management has a wide field of study, but its implementation in Public Universities is still recent. Traditional human-computer interaction using a keyboard and mouse attached to a computer has been modified with the emergence of technologies that incorporate resources into clothing, furniture and everyday objects. These technologies open up new opportunities for designers to create innovative forms of interaction based on gestures, body movements or physical manipulation of real objects. One such innovation is the tangible interface, which allows computer users to interact with digital systems through the manipulation of physical objects. The Makey Makey interface, for example, is a printed circuit with a microcontroller that allows everyday objects to be used as computer keys. This paper presents a literature review of reported experiences with Makey Makey, the objective being to explore new educational and inclusive perspectives. For that, the main researches related to Makey Makey from 2012. The methodology used is characterized by the Goal-Question-Metric (GQM) protocol and included 14 articles in total. The results showed that the circuit can be used in several contexts, with important reports from the medical field with patients with cerebral palsy from the perspective of inclusion and motivational activities with the elderly. In addition, it was possible to verify that the contexts are varied, including entertainment, fun, games and a multitude of possibilities in the pedagogical area, especially if we consider their insertion in Early Childhood Education, integrating music and stimulating inventiveness.
