    Longitudinal changes of telomere length and epigenetic age related to traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder

    Several studies have reported an association between traumatic stress and telomere length suggesting that traumatic stress has an impact on ageing at the cellular level. A newly derived tool provides an additional means to investigate cellular ageing by estimating epigenetic age based on DNA methylation profiles. We therefore hypothesise that in a longitudinal study of traumatic stress both indicators of cellular ageing will show increased ageing. We expect that particularly in individuals that developed symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) increases in these ageing parameters would stand out.From an existing longitudinal cohort study, ninety-six male soldiers were selected based on trauma exposure and the presence of symptoms of PTSD. All military personnel were deployed in a combat zone in Afghanistan and assessed before and 6 months after deployment. The Self-Rating Inventory for PTSD was used to measure the presence of PTSD symptoms, while exposure to combat trauma during deployment was measured with a 19-item deployment experiences checklist. These groups did not differ for age, gender, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, military rank, length, weight, or medication use. In DNA from whole blood telomere length was measured and DNA methylation levels were assessed using the Illumina 450K DNA methylation arrays. Epigenetic ageing was estimated using the DNAm age estimator procedure.The association of trauma with telomere length was in the expected direction but not significant (. B=. -10.2, p=. 0.52). However, contrary to our expectations, development of PTSD symptoms was associated with the reverse process, telomere lengthening (. B=. 1.91, p=. 0.018). In concordance, trauma significantly accelerated epigenetic ageing (. B=. 1.97, p=. 0.032) and similar to the findings in telomeres, development of PTSD symptoms was inversely associated with epigenetic ageing (. B=. -0.10, p=. 0.044). Blood cell count, medication and premorbid early life trauma exposure did not confound the results.Overall, in this longitudinal study of military personnel deployed to Afghanistan we show an acceleration of ageing by trauma. However, development of PTSD symptoms was associated with telomere lengthening and reversed epigenetic ageing. These findings warrant further study of a perhaps dysfunctional compensatory cellular ageing reversal in PTSD

    Dust in Supernovae and Supernova Remnants I : Formation Scenarios

    Supernovae are considered as prime sources of dust in space. Observations of local supernovae over the past couple of decades have detected the presence of dust in supernova ejecta. The reddening of the high redshift quasars also indicate the presence of large masses of dust in early galaxies. Considering the top heavy IMF in the early galaxies, supernovae are assumed to be the major contributor to these large amounts of dust. However, the composition and morphology of dust grains formed in a supernova ejecta is yet to be understood with clarity. Moreover, the dust masses inferred from observations in mid-infrared and submillimeter wavelength regimes differ by two orders of magnitude or more. Therefore, the mechanism responsible for the synthesis of molecules and dust in such environments plays a crucial role in studying the evolution of cosmic dust in galaxies. This review summarises our current knowledge of dust formation in supernova ejecta and tries to quantify the role of supernovae as dust producers in a galaxy.Peer reviewe

    The flyby anomaly: a multivariate analysis approach

    [EN] The flyby anomaly is the unexpected variation of the asymptotic post-encounter velocity of a spacecraft with respect to the pre-encounter velocity as it performs a slingshot manoeuvre. This effect has been detected in, at least, six flybys of the Earth but it has not appeared in other recent flybys. In order to find a pattern in these, apparently contradictory, data several phenomenological formulas have been proposed but all have failed to predict a new result in agreement with the observations. In this paper we use a multivariate dimensional analysis approach to propose a fitting of the data in terms of the local parameters at perigee, as it would occur if this anomaly comes from an unknown fifth force with latitude dependence.     Competência emocional nos fisioterapeutas da rede nacional de cuidados continuados integrados

    O presente estudo foi delineado com a finalidade de elaborar uma imagem diagnóstica de perfil em Competência Emocional (CE) – conceito aqui assumido como objeto de estudo - dos Fisioterapeutas da Rede Nacional de Cuidados Continuados Integrados, para projetar uma eventual intervenção formativa nesta comunidade. Os Objetivos concentraram-se em reconhecer, num primeiro momento cronológico, os comportamentos e atitudes que identificam as cinco capacidades da C.E. (Autoconsciência, Gestão de Emoções, Automotivação, Empatia e Gestão de Emoções em Grupos) destes profissionais, para, num segundo momento, se aceder aos comportamentos ou atitudes considerados mais perturbadores, e portanto, aos pontos críticos de intervenção, comprovando assim a pertinência – ou não - para uma formação nesta área de desenvolvimento humano, aqui assumida como a Educação Emocional. Para aceder a estes objetivos, foi levado a cabo um estudo exploratório, quantitativo e correlacional, tendo como amostra respondente 58 Fisioterapeutas da RNCCI - concretamente nas Unidades de Internamento – sendo 49 do género feminino e 9 do género masculino e com idades compreendidas maioritariamente dos 21 aos 30 anos. Os dados recolhidos a partir das respostas da amostra ao instrumento de recolha de dados – Escala Veiga de C.E. (EVCE) (Veiga-Branco, 2005, 2007), aplicado via on line através do Google Docs - foram submetidos a diferentes procedimentos estatísticos: inicialmente através de estatística descritiva, seguida de estudos correlacionais com respetiva significância estatística, obtendo assim quais as capacidades que expressam o perfil atitudinal e comportamental da C.E. Os resultados das correlações entre as capacidades e a Competência Emocional são positivas e muito fortes, no entanto, neste perfil a amostra revela um perfil diferente do apresentado em construto teórico. O facto de os Fisioterapeutas expressarem que só “Por Norma”, vivem as capacidades de Gestão de Emoções, Gestão de Emoções em Grupos e de Automotivação, revelam necessidade de intervenção de Educação Emocional nestas destrezas, como forma promotora da sua C.E..The present study was designed with the aim of developing a diagnostic imaging profile in Emotional Competence (EC) – a concept adopted here as an object of study – the National Network of Physiotherapists of Continuous Care, to design a possible training in this community. Objectives focused on recognizing, at first chronological, behaviors and attitudes that identify five capabilities of EC (Self-Awarness, Emotions Management, Self Motivation, Empathy and Emotions Management Groups) of these professionals, for, second, if access behaviors or attitudes considered more disturbing, and therefore the critical points of intervention, thus proving the relevance – or not – for training in this area of human development, here assumed to Emotional Education. To reach these goals, it was carries out an exploratory study, quantitative and correlational, and a sample of 58 RNCCI Physiotherapists respondents – specifically in Inpatient Units – which 49 females and 9 males and aged mostly from 21 at age 30. The data collected from the responses of the sample to the instrument for data collection – Escala Veiga de Competência Emocional (EVCE) (Veiga-Branco, 2005, 2007) on line through Google Docs – were subjected to different statistical procedures: initially through descriptive statistics, followed by correlational studies with respective statistical significance, thereby obtaining what capabilities express attitudinal and behavioral profile of EC. The results of the correlations between the capabilities and Emotional Competence are positive and very strong, however, in this profile the sample reveals a different profile presented in the theoretical construct. The fact that Physiotherapists only express “By Norma”, living skills Management Emotions, Emotions Management Groups and Self Motivation, reveal the need for intervention of Emotional Education in these skills as a way of promoting their EC

    Anomalous accelerations in spacecraft flybys of the Earth

    [EN] The flyby anomaly is a persistent riddle in astrodynamics. Orbital analysis in several flybys of the Earth since the Galileo spacecraft flyby of the Earth in 1990 have shown that the asymptotic post-encounter velocity exhibits a difference with the initial velocity that cannot be attributed to conventional effects. To elucidate its origin, we have developed an orbital program for analyzing the trajectory of the spacecraft in the vicinity of the perigee, including both the Sun and the Moon¿s tidal perturbations and the geopotential zonal, tesseral and sectorial harmonics provided by the EGM96 model. The magnitude and direction of the anomalous acceleration acting upon the spacecraft can be estimated from the orbital determination program by comparing with the trajectories fitted to telemetry data as provided by the mission teams. This acceleration amounts to a fraction of a mm/s2 and decays very fast with altitude.     Determination of trace elements (Zn, Co and Ni) in sediments at the Amazon Continental Shelf on influence of the Amazon River discharge This research was developed at Amazon Continental Shelf (ACS) between the Orange Cape (Amapá State) and the Maguari Cape (Pará State), to determine the levels of zinc, cobalt and nickel in the superficial sediments identifying its inputs and outputs. The rate of these metallic elements in the sediments decreases following Zn> Ni> Co. The concentrations of total metals in the surface sediments range from Zn = 52.8-159.5; Ni = 21.7-47.4 and Co = 14.3-48.8 (mg.kg-1). The levels of trace elements observed in the sediments at ACS are of natural occurrence. Pollution sources of metallic elements were not observed

    Perfil de sensibilidade aos antimicrobianos e eficácia de sanitizantes frente aos isolados de Salmonella spp. oriundos de carcaças suínas no Rio Grande do Sul

    Os objetivos do trabalho foram avaliar o perfil de sensibilidade a antimicrobianos e a eficácia de três sanitizantes frente a isolados de Salmonella spp. oriundos de carcaças na tecnologia de abate de suínos. Avaliaram-se 120 amostras, das quais 39 foram positivas para Salmonella spp. Os princípios ativos testados foram penicilina G 10 U, amoxicilina + ácido clavulânico 30mcg, ampicilina 10mcg, cloranfenicol 30mcg, tetraciclina 30mcg, estreptomicina 10mcg, neomicina 30mcg, gentamicina 10mcg, enrofloxacina 5mcg, sulfazotrim 25mcg, sulfonamida 300mcg e trimetropima 5mcg. Nos testes com sanitizantes utilizaram-se clorexidina, amônia quaternária e ácido peracético com tempos de contato de um, cinco, 10 e 15 minutos. Os índices de resistência aos antimicrobianos foram de 100% para penicilina, 94,9% para tetraciclina, 89,7% para trimetropima e 87,2% para ampicilina. Nenhum dos princípios ativos foi 100% eficaz frente aos isolados testados, observando-se melhor ação para amoxicilina+ácido clavulânico (86,7%), neomicina (86,7%) e cloranfenicol (64,1%). Nos testes de eficácia dos sanitizantes, o ácido peracético a 0.5% foi efetivo a partir de 10 minutos (94,6%) e 15 minutos (97,3%) de contato; amônia quaternária a 1% por 10 minutos (89,2%) e 15 minutos (97,3%) e clorexidina a 0.5% por 10 minutos (70,3%) e 15 minutos de contato (72,8%). Todas as amostras testadas apresentaram multirresistência e seis (15,3%) apresentaram resistência à ampicilina, cloranfenicol, estreptomicina, sulfonamida e tetraciclina (denominado grupo ACSSuT), indicando a necessidade de monitorar a propagação da resistência aos antimicrobianos em Salmonella spp. oriundas de suínos. O sanitizante mais efetivo frente aos isolados testados foi o ácido peracético a 0.5% por 15 minutos, reforçando a necessidade de monitorar também a efetividade de produtos sanitizantes frente aos isolados de Salmonella spp

    Composição química e toxicidade de óleos essenciais para o pulgão-verde Schizaphis graminum (Rondani, 1852)

    Este trabalho teve como objetivo identificar e quantificar os constituintes dos óleos essenciais de Illicum verum, Ageratum conyzoides, Piper hispidinervum e Ocotea odorifera, bem como avaliar a toxicidade para o pulgão-verde Schizaphis graminum. A qualificação dos constituintes foi realizada por meio de um cromatógrafo gasoso + espectrômetro de massas, e a quantificação, por um cromatógrafo gasoso + detector de ionização de chama, ambos com uma coluna DB5. O método de hidrodestilação promoveu um rendimento (p/p) de 3,81% para I. verum, 0,46% para A. conyzoides, 2,85% para P. hispidinervum e 0,68% para O. odorífera. Já os componentes majoritários foram: precoceno (87,0%) e (E)-cariofileno (7,1%) para A. conyzoides; (E)-anetol (90,4%), limoneno (2,6%) e metil-chavicol (1,3%) para I. verum; metil-eugenol (81,2%) e safrol (10,6%) para Ocotea odorífera; e safrol (82,5%) e α-terpinoleno (13,4%) para P. hispidinervum. Pelos testes de toxicidade aguda (24 horas) com folhas de sorgo ou papel-filtro contaminados, verificou-se que o óleo de A. conyzoides foi o mais tóxico para o pulgão, com CL50 de 7,13 e 7,08 µL óleo/cm2 respectivamente, seguido por O. odorifera com CL50 de 11,80 e 103,00 µL óleo/cm2 respectivamente; I. verum de 51,80 µL óleo/cm2 em ambos os substratos; e o menos tóxico foi o óleo essencial de P. hispidinervum, com CL50 de 62,50 e 143,00 µL óleo/cm2, respectivamente. Dessa maneira, sugere-se que o uso dos óleos essenciais pode representar uma nova ferramenta em programas de manejo integrado de pragas.The aim of this study was to assess the chemical composition of essential oils of Illicum verum, Ageratum conyzoides, Piper hispidinervum and Ocotea odorífera, as well as their toxicity to the green-aphid Schizaphis graminum. Compound identification was carried out with gas chromatography + mass spectrometry, and quantification with gas chromatography + flame ionization detector, both with DB5 column. The hydrodistillation process promoted oil yield of 3.81% for I. verum; 0.46% for A. conyzoides; 2.85 % for P. hispidinervum; and 0.68 % for O. odorífera. The major components from the oils of A. conyzoides was precocene (87.0%) and (E)-caryophyllene (7.1%); (E)-anethol (90.4%), limonene (2.6%) and methyl-chavicol (1.3%) for I. verum; methyleugenol (81.2%) and safrole (10.6%) for O. odorifera; and safrole (82.5%) and α-terpinolene (13.4%) for P. hispidinervum. The acute toxicity test (24 hours) performed by contact in sorghum leaves or contaminated filter-paper showed that the higher toxicity occur with essential oils of A. conyzoides, with LC50 of 7.01 and 7.01 µg oil/cm2, respectively; followed by O. odorifera, with LC50 of 17.10 and 66.70 µg oil/cm2, respectively; I. verum, with LC50 of 66.40 and 65.40 µg oil/cm2, respectively; and low toxicity was observed for the P. hispidinervum essential oil, with LC50 of 64.00 and 143.00 oil/cm2, respectively.
