    Tropical Animal Health and Production: a 55‑year bibliographic analysis setting the course for a globalized international reference journal

    In this paper, we carried out a bibliographic mapping analysis with data from Scopus on publications in Tropical Animal Health and Production (TAHP) from its creation. This analysis is important for the journal and its readership, as a self-evaluation in terms of the scope and impact of the journal and how it is changing as well as aiding the editors in shaping the future direction of the journal. A total of 6229 papers were found, with an average of 8.71 citations per paper. Article Influence, Percentage of papers in Open Access, Immediacy Index, and Journal Impact Factor have all risen in recent years, although improvements are still necessary. With a cited half-life of 7.2 years, the percentage of papers in international collaboration has stabilized since 2010 (around 40%), down from around a peak of 60% in 2006. The journal is a Q2 journal with 86.4% of its documents cited. Of all documents published, 2401 were classified in SDG3 (Good Health and Wellbeing) followed by SDG2 (Zero Hunger) with 136. We mapped citations, co-citations, and bibliographic coupling and identified major authors, sources, references, and countries publishing in TAHP. The journal continues to play a key role in advancing knowledge and understanding of animal health and production in tropical and sub-tropical regions and supporting the development of sustainable animal production and veterinary medicine in these vast regions of the globe.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Non-random distribution of microsatellite motifs and (TTAGGG)n repeats in the monkey frog Pithecopus rusticus (Anura, Phyllomedusidae) karyotype

    The monkey frog, Pithecopus rusticus (Anura, Phyllomedusidae) is endemic to the grasslands of the Araucarias Plateau, southern Brazil. This species is known only from a small population found at the type locality. Here, we analyzed for the first time the chromosomal organization of the repetitive sequences, including seven microsatellite repeats and telomeric sequences (TTAGGG)n in the karyotype of the species by Fluorescence in situ Hybridization. The dinucleotide motifs had a pattern of distribution clearly distinct from those of the tri- and tetranucleotides. The dinucleotide motifs are abundant and widely distributed in the chromosomes, located primarily in the subterminal regions. The tri- and tetranucleotides, by contrast, tend to be clustered. with signals being observed together in the secondary constriction of the homologs of pair 9, which are associated with the nucleolus organizer region. As expected, the (TTAGGG)n probe was hybridized in all the telomeres, with hybridization signals being detected in the interstitial regions of some chromosome pairs. We demonstrated the variation in the abundance and distribution of the different microsatellite motifs and revealed their non-random distribution in the karyotype of P. rusticus.     Virtually Real, But Not Quite There: Social and Economic Barriers to Meeting Virtual Reality’s True Potential for Mental Health

    7 pagesStrategies to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, namely quarantine and social distancing protocols, have exposed a troubling paradox: mandated isolation meant to preserve well-being has inadvertently contributed to its decline. Prolonged isolation has been associated with widespread loneliness and diminished mental health, with effects compounded by limited face-to-face access to clinical and social support systems. While remote communication technologies (e.g., video chat) can connect individuals with healthcare providers and social networks, remote technologies might have limited effectiveness in clinical and social contexts. In this review, we articulate the promise of Virtual Reality as a conduit to clinical resources and social connection. Furthermore, we outline various social and economic factors limiting the virtual reality industry’s ability to maximize its potential to address mental health issues brought upon by the pandemic. These barriers are delineated across five dimensions: sociocultural, content, affordability, supply chain, and equitable design. After examining potential short- and long-term solutions to these hurdles, we outline potential avenues for applied and theoretical research seeking to validate these solutions. Through this evaluation we seek to (a) emphasize virtual reality’s capacity to improve mental health by connecting communities to clinical and social support systems, (b) identify socioeconomic barriers preventing users from accessing these systems through virtual reality, and (c) discuss solutions that ensure these systems can be equitably accessed via changes to existing and future virtual reality infrastructures

    Sleep deprivation affects inflammatory marker expression in adipose tissue

    <p>Abstract</p> <p/> <p>Sleep deprivation has been shown to increase inflammatory markers in rat sera and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Inflammation is a condition associated with pathologies such as obesity, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. We investigated changes in the pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines and adipokines in different depots of white adipose tissue in rats. We also assessed lipid profiles and serum levels of corticosterone, leptin, and adiponectin after 96 hours of sleep deprivation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study consisted of two groups: a control (C) group and a paradoxical sleep deprivation by 96 h (PSD) group. Ten rats were randomly assigned to either the control group (C) or the PSD. Mesenteric (MEAT) and retroperitoneal (RPAT) adipose tissue, liver and serum were collected following completion of the PSD protocol. Levels of interleukin (IL)-6, interleukin (IL)-10 and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α were analysed in MEAT and RPAT, and leptin, adiponectin, glucose, corticosterone and lipid profile levels were analysed in serum.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>IL-6 levels were elevated in RPAT but remained unchanged in MEAT after PSD. IL-10 protein concentration was not altered in either depot, and TNF-α levels decreased in MEAT. Glucose, triglycerides (TG), VLDL and leptin decreased in serum after 96 hours of PSD; adiponectin was not altered and corticosterone was increased.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>PSD decreased fat mass and may modulate the cytokine content in different depots of adipose tissue. The inflammatory response was diminished in both depots of adipose tissue, with increased IL-6 levels in RPAT and decreased TNF-α protein concentrations in MEAT and increased levels of corticosterone in serum.</p

    Validation of a microsatellite panel for parentage testing of locally adapted and commercial goats in Brazil

    Brazilian goats are generally kept in small herds and extensive rearing systems, mainly in the northeastern region of the country. Despite production improvement in recent years, the lack of pedigree control has affected genetic progress. This study aimed to validate a panel of 16 microsatellites for parentage testing in locally adapted and commercial goats breeds raised in Brazil, as well as to compare its efficiency with the panel recommended by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supplies (MAPA) in 2004. The number of alleles and expected heterozygosity (He) per marker ranged from four to 18, and from 0.051 to 0.831, respectively. Using all markers, 100% of parentage cases of the validation dataset were resolved with a strict confidence level of 95%. The 16 microsatellites panel showed adequate exclusion power (99.99%) and identity accuracy (99.99%). Suggestions for improvement of the marker panel endorsed by MAPA are provided

    Anomalous Dimensions and Non-Gaussianity

    We analyze the signatures of inflationary models that are coupled to strongly interacting field theories, a basic class of multifield models also motivated by their role in providing dynamically small scales. Near the squeezed limit of the bispectrum, we find a simple scaling behavior determined by operator dimensions, which are constrained by the appropriate unitarity bounds. Specifically, we analyze two simple and calculable classes of examples: conformal field theories (CFTs), and large-N CFTs deformed by relevant time-dependent double-trace operators. Together these two classes of examples exhibit a wide range of scalings and shapes of the bispectrum, including nearly equilateral, orthogonal and local non-Gaussianity in different regimes. Along the way, we compare and contrast the shape and amplitude with previous results on weakly coupled fields coupled to inflation. This signature provides a precision test for strongly coupled sectors coupled to inflation via irrelevant operators suppressed by a high mass scale up to 1000 times the inflationary Hubble scale.Comment: 40 pages, 10 figure

    Relação Médico-Paciente e Relação Perito-Periciando: diferenças e semelhanças

    Introdução: A relação médico-paciente é a base da Medicina e está fundamentada nos princípios da beneficência, não-maleficência, justiça e autonomia. A perícia médica surgiu diante da necessidade da aplicação de conhecimentos técnicos no âmbito do Direito. As diferenças entre essas duas atuações médicas é objeto de conflitos que dificultam a atuação do médico perito. Objetivo: Estabelecer as diferenças e semelhanças entre a relação médico-paciente e a relação perito-periciando. Material e Métodos: Revisão de literatura de artigos e periódicos em língua portuguesa na base de dados Scielo e em livros especializados sobre o assunto. Discussão: A relação médico-paciente se baseia em confiança mútua, estabelecimento de vínculo mútuo, busca por um resultado em comum: diagnóstico e tratamento; há coerência entre a comunicação verbal e não verbal, a anamnese constitui o principal método propedêutico, sendo os exames complementares solicitados para auxiliar o diagnóstico e há o compromisso com o sigilo profissional. Já a relação perito-periciando possui uma natureza investigativa, não havendo uma relação de confiança mútua, a finalidade é o esclarecimento da Justiça e o sigilo profissional não fica restrito ao binômio perito-periciando. A semelhança entre essas duas relações está relacionada à conduta do médico que deve ser pautada na técnica, no respeito, educação e abstenção de julgamentos morais e de valores, além da necessidade de atualização por parte do profissional. Conclusão: A relação médico-paciente e a relação perito-periciando apresentam características peculiaridades e algumas delas são inconfundíveis. Em ambas as situações observamos a importância da atuação médica como essência desta relação e suas consequentes implicações morais, jurídicas e éticas.Introduction: Physician-patient relationship is the basis of Medicine. It is founded on the principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and autonomy. The field of legal medical developed from the need to apply technical knowledge to assist legal processes. The differences between these two medical practices are at the origin of conflicts that hinder the performance of the medical examiner. Objective: To establish the differences and similarities between the physician-patient relationship and the –examiner-patient relationship. Methods: Literature review of articles and journals in Portuguese in Scielo databases and in specialized books on the subject. Discussion: Physician-patient relationship is based on mutual trust and mutual bond; the physician and patient both seek for diagnosis and treatment; there is consistency between verbal and nonverbal communication; establishing the case history is the main diagnostic method, while further tests are requested to assist the diagnosis; and there is a commitment to professional secrecy. The examiner-patient relationship has an investigative nature; it is not based on mutual trust; the purpose is to assist Court decisions by clarifying medical aspects of the case; and professional confidentiality is not restricted to the examiner-patient binomial. The similarity between these two relations is seen in the physician’s conduct, which must always be based on technique, respect, appropriate behavior, a non-judgmental approach, and also being up to date on professional advances . Conclusion: The Patient-Physician Relationship and the Patient-Examiner Relationship have peculiarities and some of them are unmistakable. In both situations, we observe the importance of medical practice as the essence of this relationship and its consequent moral, legal, and ethical implications

De acordo com esta definição, os resultados desejáveis das experiências inclusivas para crianças com e sem incapacidades, incluem um sentimento de pertença, relações sociais positivas e amizades, desenvolvimento e aprendizagem.     Molecular Profiling of Axial Spondyloarthritis Patients Reveals an Association between Innate and Adaptive Cell Populations and Therapeutic Response to Tumor Necrosis Factor Inhibitors

Publisher Copyright: © 2024 by the authors.This study aims at identifying molecular biomarkers differentiating responders and non-responders to treatment with Tumor Necrosis Factor inhibitors (TNFi) among patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). Whole blood mRNA and plasma proteins were measured in a cohort of biologic-naïve axSpA patients (n = 35), pre and post (14 weeks) TNFi treatment with adalimumab. Differential expression analysis was used to identify the most enriched pathways and in predictive models to distinguish responses to TNFi. A treatment-associated signature suggests a reduction in inflammatory activity. We found transcripts and proteins robustly differentially expressed between baseline and week 14 in responders. C-reactive protein (CRP) and Haptoglobin (HP) proteins showed strong and early decrease in the plasma of axSpA patients, while a cluster of apolipoproteins (APOD, APOA2, APOA1) showed increased expression at week 14. Responders to TNFi treatment present higher levels of markers of innate immunity at baseline, and lower levels of adaptive immunity markers, particularly B-cells. A logistic regression model incorporating ASDAS-CRP, gender, and AFF3, the top differentially expressed gene at baseline, enabled an accurate prediction of response to adalimumab in our cohort (AUC = 0.97). In conclusion, innate and adaptive immune cell type composition at baseline may be a major contributor to response to adalimumab in axSpA patients.
