    Liquidity Risk and Profitability of Listed Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria

    Illiquidity of firms especially banks can lead to loss of businesses thereby reducing the potentials of earnings and profitability; this is because high liquidity position of a firm helps it to meet with some obligations which lead to funding of loans and advances that could aid banks to earn income in the form of interests on loans. The study examined the effect of liquidity risk on financial performance of listed Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) in Nigeria covering a period of ten years (2009-2018).This study adopted an ex-post facto research design.  The population of the study was 15 deposit money banks listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange and employed panel regression analysis with emphasis on pooled, fixed and random effect models. Secondary data were sourced from the annual reports of the 14 selected quoted banks in Nigeria. The Hausman test was used to justify the appropriate model and inferences were made at 5 percent significant level.  The findings revealed that Liquidity risk had significant effects on profitability. In particular, it was established that Liquidity risk indicators had positive and significant effects on individual profitability variables; viz: Return on equity of deposit money banks in Nigeria (β = 49.76, p = 0.000), Return on Assets (β = 12.87, p = 0.005) and Earnings per share (β =20.92, p = 0.000). The study concluded that Liquidity risk has significant effect on return on equity, return on assets and earning per share of deposit Money Banks listed in Nigeria. The study, therefore, recommended that management of banks should establish strategies to better manage their cash-flows in each product segment and maintain an optimal levels in order to earn higher returns from high volume of idle cash balances.     Ferrofluids as thermal ratchets

    Colloidal suspensions of ferromagnetic nano-particles, so-called ferrofluids, are shown to be suitable systems to demonstrate and investigate thermal ratchet behavior: By rectifying thermal fluctuations, angular momentum is transferred to a resting ferrofluid from an oscillating magnetic field without net rotating component. Via viscous coupling the noise driven rotation of the microscopic ferromagnetic grains is transmitted to the carrier liquid to yield a macroscopic torque. For a simple setup we analyze the rotation of the ferrofluid theoretically and show that the results are compatible with the outcome of a simple demonstration experiment.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, corrected version, improved figures, to be published in Phys.     Highly disturbed populations of seagrass show increased resilience but lower genotypic diversity

    The response of seagrass systems to a severe disturbance provides an opportunity to quantify the degree of resilience in different meadows, and subsequently to test whether there is a genetic basis to resilience. We used existing data on levels of long-standing disturbance from poor water quality, and the responses of seagrass (Zostera muelleri) after an extreme flood event in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. Sites were grouped into high and low disturbance categories, in which seagrass showed high and low resilience, respectively, as determined by measuring rates of key feedback processes (nutrient removal, suppression of sediment resuspension, and algal grazing), and physiological and morphological traits. Theoretically, meadows with higher genotypic diversity would be expected to have greater resilience. However, because the more resilient meadows occur in areas historically exposed to high disturbance, the alternative is also possible, that selection will have resulted in a narrower, less diverse subset of genotypes than in less disturbed meadows. Levels of genotypic and genetic diversity (allelic richness) based on 11 microsatellite loci, were positively related (R2 = 0.58). Genotypic diversity was significantly lower at highly disturbed sites (R = 0.49) than at less disturbed sites (R = 0.61). Genotypic diversity also showed a negative trend with two morphological characteristics known to confer resilience on seagrass in Moreton Bay, leaf chlorophyll concentrations and seagrass biomass. Genetic diversity did not differ between disturbed and undisturbed sites. We postulate that the explanation for these results is historical selection for genotypes that confer protection against disturbance, reducing diversity in meadows that contemporarily show greater resilience

    Two-marker protein profile predicts poor prognosis in patients with early rectal cancer

    The aim of this study was to establish an immunohistochemical protein profile to complement preoperative staging and identify rectal cancer patients at high-risk of adverse outcome. Immunohistochemistry was performed on a tissue microarray including 482 rectal cancers for APAF-1, EphB2, MST1, Ki67, p53, RHAMM, RKIP and CD8+ tumour infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). After resampling of the data and multivariable analysis, the most reproducible markers were combined and prognosis evaluated as stratified by pT and pN status. In multivariable analysis, only positive RHAMM (P<0.001; HR=1.94 (1.44–2.61)) and loss of CD8+ TILs (P=0.006; HR=0.63 (0.45–0.88)) were independent prognostic factors. The 5-year cancer-specific survival rate for RHAMM+/TIL− patients was 30% (95% CI 21–40%) compared to 76% (95% CI: 66–84%) for RHAMM−/TIL+ patients (P<0.001). The 5-year cancer-specific survival of T1/T2/RHAMM+/TIL− patients was 48% (20–72%) and significantly worse compared to T3/T4/RHAMM−/TIL+ patients (71% 95% CI 56–82%); P=0.039). Stratifying by nodal status, only N+/RHAMM+/TIL− patients demonstrated a significantly worse prognosis than N0/RHAMM+/TIL− patients (P=0.005). Loss of CD8+ TILs was predictive of local recurrence in RHAMM+ tumours (P=0.009) only. RHAMM and CD8+ TILs may assist in identifying early stage rectal cancer patients facing a particularly poor prognosis and who may derive a benefit from preoperative therapy

    Pareto rules for malaria super-spreaders and super-spreading

    Heterogeneity in transmission is a challenge for infectious disease dynamics and control. An 80-20 “Pareto” rule has been proposed to describe this heterogeneity whereby 80% of transmission is accounted for by 20% of individuals, herein called super-spreaders. It is unclear, however, whether super-spreading can be attributed to certain individuals or whether it is an unpredictable and unavoidable feature of epidemics. Here, we investigate heterogeneous malaria transmission at three sites in Uganda and find that super-spreading is negatively correlated with overall malaria transmission intensity. Mosquito biting among humans is 90-10 at the lowest transmission intensities declining to less than 70-30 at the highest intensities. For super-spreaders, biting ranges from 70-30 down to 60-40. The difference, approximately half the total variance, is due to environmental stochasticity. Super-spreading is thus partly due to super-spreaders, but modest gains are expected from targeting super-spreaders

    Hair regrowth treatment efficacy and resistance in androgenetic alopecia: A systematic review and continuous Bayesian network meta-analysis

    BackgroundAndrogenetic alopecia (AGA) affects almost half the population, and several treatments intending to regenerate a normal scalp hair phenotype are used. This is the first study comparing treatment efficacy response and resistance using standardized continuous outcomes.ObjectiveTo systematically compare the relative efficacy of treatments used for terminal hair (TH) regrowth in women and men with AGA.MethodsA systematic literature review was conducted (from inception to August 11, 2021) to identify randomized, Placebo-controlled trials with ≥ 20 patients and reporting changes in TH density after 24 weeks. Efficacy was analyzed by sex at 12 and 24 weeks using Bayesian network meta-analysis (B-NMA) and compared to frequentist and continuous outcomes profiles.ResultsThe search identified 2,314 unique articles. Ninety-eight were included for full-text review, and 17 articles met the inclusion criteria for data extraction and analyses. Eligible treatments included ALRV5XR, Dutasteride 0.5 mg/day, Finasteride 1 mg/day, low-level laser comb treatment (LLLT), Minoxidil 2% and 5%, Nutrafol, and Viviscal. At 24 weeks, the B-NMA regrowth efficacy in TH/cm2 and significance (**) in women were ALRV5XR: 30.09**, LLLT: 16.62**, Minoxidil 2%: 12.13**, Minoxidil 5%: 10.82**, and Nutrafol: 7.32**, and in men; ALRV5XR: 21.03**, LLLT: 18.75**, Dutasteride: 18.37**, Viviscal: 13.23, Minoxidil 5%: 13.13**, Finasteride: 12.38, and Minoxidil 2%: 10.54. Two distinct TH regrowth response profiles were found; Continuous: ALRV5XR regrowth rates were linear in men and accelerated in women; Resistant: after 12 weeks, LLLT, Nutrafol, and Viviscal regrowth rates attenuated while Dutasteride and Finasteride plateaued; Minoxidil 2% and 5% lost some regrowth. There were no statistical differences for the same treatment between women and men. B-NMA provided more accurate, statistically relevant, and conservative results than the frequentist-NMA.ConclusionSome TH regrowth can be expected from most AGA treatments with less variability in women than men. Responses to drug treatments were rapid, showing strong early efficacy followed by the greatest resistance effects from flatlining to loss of regrowth after 12–16 weeks. Finasteride, Minoxidil 2% and Viviscal in men were not statistically different from Placebo. LLLT appeared more efficacious than pharmaceuticals.     Towards the simulation of biomolecules: optimisation of peptide-capped glycine using FFLUX

    YesThe optimisation of a peptide-capped glycine using the novel force field FFLUX is presented. FFLUX is a force field based on the machine-learning method kriging and the topological energy partitioning method called Interacting Quantum Atoms. FFLUX has a completely different architecture to that of traditional force fields, avoiding (harmonic) potentials for bonded, valence and torsion angles. In this study, FFLUX performs an optimisation on a glycine molecule and successfully recovers the target density-functional theory energy with an error of 0.89 ± 0.03 kJ mol−1. It also recovers the structure of the global minimum with a root-mean-squared deviation of 0.05 Å (excluding hydrogen atoms). We also show that the geometry of the intra-molecular hydrogen bond in glycine is recovered accurately.EPSRC Established Career Fellowship [grant number EP/K005472

    BWIBots: A platform for bridging the gap between AI and human–robot interaction research

    Recent progress in both AI and robotics have enabled the development of general purpose robot platforms that are capable of executing a wide variety of complex, temporally extended service tasks in open environments. This article introduces a novel, custom-designed multi-robot platform for research on AI, robotics, and especially human–robot interaction for service robots. Called BWIBots, the robots were designed as a part of the Building-Wide Intelligence (BWI) project at the University of Texas at Austin. The article begins with a description of, and justification for, the hardware and software design decisions underlying the BWIBots, with the aim of informing the design of such platforms in the future. It then proceeds to present an overview of various research contributions that have enabled the BWIBots to better (a) execute action sequences to complete user requests, (b) efficiently ask questions to resolve user requests, (c) understand human commands given in natural language, and (d) understand human intention from afar. The article concludes with a look forward towards future research opportunities and applications enabled by the BWIBot platform

    A spatially resolved analysis of star-formation burstiness by comparing UV and Hα\alpha in galaxies at z\sim1 with UVCANDELS

    The UltraViolet imaging of the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey Fields (UVCANDELS) program provides HST/UVIS F275W imaging for four CANDELS fields. We combine this UV imaging with existing HST/near-IR grism spectroscopy from 3D-HST+AGHAST to directly compare the resolved rest-frame UV and Hα\alpha emission for a sample of 979 galaxies at 0.7<z<1.50.7<z<1.5 spanning a range in stellar mass of 10811.5 M10^{8-11.5}~M_\odot. Since both rest-UV and Hα\alpha are sensitive to on-going star-formation but over different timescales, their resolved comparison allows us to infer the burstiness in star-formation as a function of galaxy structural parameters. We generate homogenized maps of rest-UV and Hα\alpha emission for all galaxies in our sample and stack them to compute the average UV-to-Hα\alpha luminosity ratio as a function of galactocentric radius. We find that galaxies below stellar mass of 109.5 M\sim10^{9.5}~M_\odot, at all radii, have a UV-to-Hα\alpha ratio higher than the equilibrium value expected from constant star-formation, indicating a significant contribution from bursty star-formation. Even for galaxies with stellar mass 109.5M\gtrsim10^{9.5} M_\odot, the UV-to-Hα\alpha ratio is elevated towards in their outskirts (R/Reff>1.5R/R_{eff}>1.5), suggesting that bursty star-formation is likely prevalent in the outskirts of even the most massive galaxies but is likely over-shadowed by their brighter cores. Furthermore, we present the UV-to-Hα\alpha ratio as a function of galaxy surface brightness, a proxy for stellar mass surface density, and find that regions below 108 M kpc2\sim10^8~M_\odot~kpc^{-2} are consistent with bursty star-formation, regardless of their galaxy stellar mass, potentially suggesting that local star-formation is independent of global galaxy properties at the smallest scales.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures; submitted to Ap
