    La "novella strada" del poema epico rinascimentale: Gian Giorgio Trissino e "La Italia liberata da' Gotthi"

    This dissertation is based on Trissino’s epic poem "La Italia liberata da’ Gotthi". It’s divided into two different parts: the first one is a monographic analysis of the different components of the book, while the second is a commented transcript of the unpublished autograph known as "Zibaldone dell’Italia liberata". More in details, the first part begins with considerations about the "Sesta divisione della Poetica" and the "Lettera dedicatoria a Carlo V", Trissino’s theoretical works about epic poetry. Next part concerns a general presentation of the "Italia", encompassing editions, structure, subjects, sequence of events and characters of the poem, with the intent of approaching the reader to a work often disregarded by the critics. Next chapter deals with the sources of the poem with a specific focus to the reference to Homeric "Iliad": it is discussed how Trissino refers to every single book of "Iliad" and demonstrated how this link is more than a mere inspiration. Last section concerns some elements of the poem still matter of debate: "Italia"’s characters organization and Trissino’s conception of the epic hero; a possible political interpretation of the poem. The second part is directed to the commentary and analysis of the "Zibaldone" manuscript. It contains autographic notes in view of the draft of the Italia, regarding the structure of the poem, the topics of the books, the Italian geopolitical situation of 6th century, the setting details, the trial version of many lines. This in-depth analysis can be considered a visit into the writing workshop of the author, giving insights into two fundamentals aspects of the composition process: it allows to monitor methods, tools and techniques used by Trissino, as well as exploring his readings and inspirations

    L’articolo offre alcune riflessioni sulle caratteristiche dell’imitatio omerica trissiniana all’interno dell’Italia liberata dai Goti, poema eroico da sempre considerato una sorta di copia rinascimentale dell’Iliade. L’analisi di uno degli innumerevoli blocchi narrativi che il Vicentino mutua dall’Iliade per innestarlo, con pochi indispensabili adattamenti, all’interno dell’Italia, è seguita da un’indagine condotta sullo Zibaldone dell’Italia liberata, manoscritto autografo contenente appunti e sperimentazioni di versi preparatori alla stesura del poema, alcune carte del quale sono considerabili alla stregua di un laboratorio di traduzione omerica.L’article propose des réflexions sur l’imitatio homérique de Giangiorgio Trissino à l’intérieur de l’Italia liberata dai Goti, poème héroïque considéré depuis toujours comme une sorte de reproduction de l’Iliade à la Renaissance. L’analyse se concentre d’abord sur un des nombreux passages que le poète emprunte à l’Iliade pour l’insérer, avec des modifications nécessaires, à l’intérieur de son épopée. La recherche porte ensuite sur le Zibaldone dell’Italia liberata, le manuscrit autographe qui contient des notes et des essais des vers préparatoires à l’écriture du poème.     Simulating the Impact on the Local Economy of Alternative Management Scenarios for Natural Areas

    This working paper estimates the impact on the local economy of the High Garda Natural Park of alternative management scenarios for the West Garda Regional Forest. The local economy is specialized in tourist services and strongly linked to the tourist presence and their level of expenditure. We wish to investigate the effects of the participative management strategy, which takes into account users preferences and the non-participative strategy, using the SAM multiplier analysis. The local SAM has been constructed considering three sectors: agriculture, tourism and a third aggregate sector including all the other activities. The resident population has been divided into two categories: residents employed in the tourist sector and the remaining resident population. The SAM analysis shows that the accounting representation of the local economy is meaningful and that the participative program, if chosen by the central regional management, would be the most desirable program also at the local level.Tourism, SAM, Multiplier analysis

    Capacity building to boost information and communication skills inside an institute of research

    To enhance its visibility, the Library of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) along with the Scientific Communication Unit of the same institution delivered a set of informal online training sessions, or webinars, on their fields of expertise: information retrieval, publication, effective communication, and research evaluation, specifically addressed to internal users. The collaboration was extremely useful in terms of improved knowledge on skills available among the personnel of these two services. It increased trust in the competencies of internal staff and at the same time it contributed to develop awareness of the value of the services rendered. Skills to use available online resources for training were improved as well as ISS staff cohesion favouring the development of new collaborations

    Salivary and serum irisin in healthy adults before and after exercise

    Irisin is an exercise-induced cytokine mainly secreted by myocytes. Circulating level of irisin can increase in response to acute exercise, promoting pleiotropic effects on health. Generally, irisin is evaluated in blood, however, its collection is invasive. Saliva sample would not have any risk associated with blood collection and would represent a less invasive method for irisin detection. Until now, there are only a few studies that have analyzed irisin levels in saliva. In the present research, five healthy male adults performed an incremental exercise until exhaustion on cycle ergometer. Serum and saliva samples were collected before exercise and 15min, 24h and 48h after reaching the exhaustion. Irisin was detected by ELISA assay. Serum and salivary irisin levels increased from baseline to 24h post exercise and reverted to basal levels after 48h of rest. A significant rise of both serum and salivary irisin level at 24h (p≤0.05) compared to baseline levels was found. Furthermore, a significant correlation between irisin percentage change in serum and saliva from baseline to 24h post exercise was detected (r=0.92, p<0.05). Despite the relatively limited sample, this research suggests that collecting saliva samples might represent a valid and less invasive method to detect irisin level changes induced by exercise

    The Blue Straggler population in the globular cluster M53 (NGC5024): a combined HST, LBT, CFHT study

    We used a proper combination of multiband high-resolution and wide field multi-wavelength observations collected at three different telescopes (HST, LBT and CFHT) to probe Blue Straggler Star (BSS) populations in the globular cluster M53. Almost 200 BSS have been identified over the entire cluster extension. The radial distribution of these stars has been found to be bimodal (similarly to that of several other clusters) with a prominent dip at ~60'' (~2 r_c) from the cluster center. This value turns out to be a factor of two smaller than the radius of avoidance (r_avoid, the radius within which all the stars of ~1.2 M_sun have sunk to the core because of dynamical friction effects in an Hubble time). While in most of the clusters with a bimodal BSS radial distribution, r_avoid has been found to be located in the region of the observed minimum, this is the second case (after NGC6388) where this discrepancy is noted. This evidence suggests that in a few clusters the dynamical friction seems to be somehow less efficient than expected. We have also used this data base to construct the radial star density profile of the cluster: this is the most extended and accurate radial profile ever published for this cluster, including detailed star counts in the very inner region. The star density profile is reproduced by a standard King Model with an extended core (~25'') and a modest value of the concentration parameter (c=1.58). A deviation from the model is noted in the most external region of the cluster (at r>6.5' from the center).     Hide and seek between Andromeda's halo, disk, and giant stream

    Photometry in B, V (down to V ~ 26 mag) is presented for two 23' x 23' fields of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) that were observed with the blue channel camera of the Large Binocular Telescope during the Science Demonstration Time. Each field covers an area of about 5.1kpc x 5.1kpc at the distance of M31 ((m-M)o ~ 24.4 mag), sampling, respectively, a northeast region close to the M31 giant stream (field S2), and an eastern portion of the halo in the direction of the galaxy minor axis (field H1). The stream field spans a region that includes Andromeda's disk and the giant stream, and this is reflected in the complexity of the color magnitude diagram of the field. One corner of the halo field also includes a portion of the giant stream. Even though these demonstration time data were obtained under non-optimal observing conditions the B photometry, acquired in time-series mode, allowed us to identify 274 variable stars (among which 96 are bona fide and 31 are candidate RR Lyrae stars, 71 are Cepheids, and 16 are binary systems) by applying the image subtraction technique to selected portions of the observed fields. Differential flux light curves were obtained for the vast majority of these variables. Our sample includes mainly pulsating stars which populate the instability strip from the Classical Cepheids down to the RR Lyrae stars, thus tracing the different stellar generations in these regions of M31 down to the horizontal branch of the oldest (t ~ 10 Gyr) component.Comment: 59 pages, 26 figures, 12 tables, ApJ in pres

    May-Hegglin Anomaly, Sebastian Syndrome, Fechtner Syndrome, and Epstein Syndrome Are not Distinct Entities but Represent a Variable Expression of a Single Illness

    May-Hegglin anomaly, Sebastian syndrome, Fechtner syndrome, and Epstein syndrome are autosomal dominant macrothrombocytopenias distinguished by different combinations of clinical and laboratory signs, such as sensorineural hearing loss, cataract, nephritis, and polymorphonuclear Döhle-like bodies. Mutations in the MYH9 gene encoding for the nonmuscle myosin heavy chain IIA (NMMHC-IIA) have been identified in all these syndromes. To understand the role of the MYH9 mutations, we report the molecular defects in 12 new cases, which together with our previous works represent a cohort of 19 families. Since no genotype-phenotype correlation was established, we performed an accurate clinical and biochemical re-evaluation of patients. In addition to macrothrombocytopenia, an abnormal distribution of NMMHC-IIA within leukocytes was observed in all individuals, including those without Döhle-like bodies. Selective, high-tone hearing deficiency and cataract was diagnosed in 83% and 23%, respectively, of patients initially referred as having May-Hegglin anomaly or Sebastian syndrome. Kidney abnormalities, such as hematuria and proteinuria, affected not only patients referred as Fechtner syndrome and Epstein syndrome but also those referred as May-Hegglin anomaly and Sebastian syndrome. These findings allowed us to conclude that May-Hegglin anomaly, Sebastian syndrome, Fechtner syndrome, and Epstein syndrome are not distinct entities but rather a single disorder with a continuous clinical spectrum varying from mild macrothrombocytopenia with leukocyte inclusions to a severe form complicated by hearing loss, cataracts, and renal failure. For this new nosologic entity, we propose the term "MHY9-related disease," which better interprets the recent knowledge in this field and identifies all patients at risk of developing renal, hearing, or visual defects

    Progesterone Receptor induces bcl-x expression through intragenic binding sites favoring RNA Polymerase II elongation

    Steroid receptors were classically described for regulating transcription by binding to target gene promoters. However, genome-wide studies reveal that steroid receptors-binding sites are mainly located at intragenic regions. To determine the role of these sites, we examined the effect of pro- gestins on the transcription of the bcl-x gene, where only intragenic progesterone receptor-binding sites (PRbs) were identified. We found that in response to hormone treatment, the PR is recruited to these sites along with two histone acetyltransferases CREB-binding protein (CBP) and GCN5, leading to an increase in histone H3 and H4 acetylation and to the binding of the SWI/SNF complex. Concomitant, a more relaxed chromatin was detected along bcl-x gene mainly in the regions sur- rounding the intragenic PRbs. PR also mediated the recruitment of the positive elongation factor pTEFb, favoring RNA polymerase II (Pol II) elongation activity. Together these events promoted the re-dis- tribution of the active Pol II toward the 30-end of the gene and a decrease in the ratio between proximal and distal transcription. These results suggest a novel mechanism by which PR regulates gene ex- pression by facilitating the proper passage of the polymerase along hormone-dependent genes.Fil: Bertucci, Paola Yanina.
