    Thermal performance of high voltage power cables

    The UK high voltage electricity transmission network continues to face annual rises in demand, with ever greater volumes of power supplied to load centres throughout the country. To operate this network effectively, it is vital to accurately calculate the maximum allowable electric current which can be safely carried by each component in the power system. In high voltage power cables, this limit is defined by the maximum operating temperature of the cable insulation. Specify this current rating to be too low and the cable asset will never be used to its full potential; conversely setting the rating to be too high risks damage to the asset as the excessive heating can cause premature failure. Thus the rating calculation must be optimised to maintain security of supply by minimising the risk of cable failure, while also maximising the returns from capital investment on the power network. This project has employed a variety of mathematical techniques to improve the methods by which current ratings are calculated. Modern computational techniques such as finite element analysis (e.g Figure 1) and computational fluid dynamics are used to create more advanced circuit rating techniques. These have been compared and refined with input gained from field data. By eliminating simplifications from existing methods, it has been possible to identify ways of increasing the utilisation of the existing network. In addition the new techniques allow examination of the potential benefits of future developments in cable technology. Benefits are being derived from this work on both a day to day and strategic planning levels. For instance, by re-evaluating the current rating method for cables installed in tunnels, it has proved possible to consider the benefits from co-locating more cables in one tunnel to best use these expensive assets. The application of this method has allowed the quantification of the benefits which might be available from next generation cable technologies, enabling the prioritisation of future research effort in cable materials. Upon completion, the knowledge gained from this work is to be used to revise the international standard on calculating current ratings in cable tunnels. Techniques such as these underpin the concept of smart grids with improved operational flexibility and capability. Simultaneously the requirement to build expensive new components into the network is limited, whilst still meeting the need to supply ever increasing volumes of power across the country

    Structural and dielectric properties of Sr2_{2}TiO4_{4} from first principles

    We have investigated the structural and dielectric properties of Sr2_{2}TiO4_{4},the first member of the Srn+1_{n+1}Tin_{n}O3n+1_{3n+1} Ruddlesden-Popper series, within density functional theory. Motivated by recent work in which thin films of Sr2_{2}TiO4_{4} were grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on SrTiO3_{3} substrates, the in-plane lattice parameter was fixed to the theoretically optimized lattice constant of cubic SrTiO3_{3} (n=\infty), while the out-of-plane lattice parameter and the internal structural parameters were relaxed. The fully relaxed structure was also investigated. Density functional perturbation theory was used to calculate the zone-center phonon frequencies, Born effective charges, and the electronic dielectric permittivity tensor. A detailed study of the contribution of individual infrared-active modes to the static dielectric permittivity tensor was performed. The calculated Raman and infrared phonon frequencies were found to be in agreement with experiment where available. Comparisons of the calculated static dielectric permittivity with experiments on both ceramic powders and epitaxial thin films are discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, 8 tables, submitted to Phys.     Polymorphism at High Molecular Weight Glutenin Subunits and Morphological Diversity of Aegilops geniculata Roth Collected in Algeria

    A collection of 35 accessions of the tetraploid wild wheat Aegilops geniculata Roth (MM, UU) sampled in northern Algeria was evaluated for morphological and biochemical variability. Morphological and ecological analyses based on morphological traits and bioclimatic parameters, respectively, were assessed using principal component analysis (PCA). Accessions were differentiated by width characters, namely spike’s width, and a weak relationship between morphological traits and ecological parameters was found. Polymorphism of high molecular weight (HMW) glutenin subunits was carried on by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Among accessions analyzed, 27 alleles were identified at the two loci Glu-M1 and Glu-U1: resulting in twenty-nine patterns and a nomenclature was proposed. Two alleles at the Glu-U1 locus expressed a new subunit with a slightly slower mobility than subunit 8. These results provide new information regarding the genetic variability of HMW glutenin subunits, as well as their usefulness in cultivated wheat quality improvement

    Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events

    The B0B^0-Bˉ0\bar B^0 oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of 23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference distributions for opposite- and same-sign dilepton events gives Δmd=0.493±0.012(stat)±0.009(syst)\Delta m_d = 0.493 \pm 0.012{(stat)}\pm 0.009{(syst)} ps1^{-1}.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review Letter

    A century of sea level measurements at Newlyn, SW England

    The Newlyn Tidal Observatory is the most important sea level station in the UK. It commenced operations in 1915 as part of the Second Geodetic Levelling of England and Wales, and the mean sea level determined from the tide gauge during the first six years (May 1915-April 1921) defined Ordnance Datum Newlyn (ODN) which became the national height datum for the whole of Great Britain. The 100 years of sea level data now available have contributed significantly to many studies in oceanography, geology and climate change. This paper marks the centenary of this important station by reviewing the sea level (and, more recently, detailed land level) measurements and Newlyn’s contributions to UK cartography, geodesy and sea-level science in general. Recommendations are made on how sea and land level measurements at Newlyn might be enhanced in the future

    In 2016, the order Mononegavirales was emended through the addition of two new families (Mymonaviridae and Sunviridae), the elevation of the paramyxoviral subfamily Pneumovirinae to family status (Pneumoviridae), the addition of five free-floating genera (Anphevirus, Arlivirus, Chengtivirus, Crustavirus, and Wastrivirus), and several other changes at the genus and species levels. This article presents the updated taxonomy of the order Mononegavirales as now accepted by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV)

    Perfil energético e hormonal de ovelhas Santa Inês do terço médio da gestação ao pós-parto

    No período periparto ocorrem importantes adequações fisiológicas que, se não forem efetivas predispõem a fêmea a enfermidades metabólicas. O conhecimento desta adaptação é relevante para que sejam implementadas, precocemente, medidas preventivas a poupar perdas produtivas. Com este objetivo foi avaliado o perfil energético e hormonal de ovelhas Santa Inês durante a gestação e puerpério. Foram utilizadas 10 ovelhas não gestantes (G0), 10 gestantes de um (G1) e 14 gestantes de dois e três fetos (G2). Foram avaliadas concentrações plasmáticas de glicose, ácidos graxos não esterificados (AGNE), betahidroxibutirato (BHB), e as concentrações séricas de insulina, glucagon, cortisol, triiodotironina (T3) e tiroxina (T4) a partir do 88º dia de gestação até o 28º dia pós-parto. No terço final de gestação, ovelhas gestantes apresentaram maiores concentrações de AGNE, T3 e T4 que as ovelhas não gestantes. No momento do parto foram observadas maiores concentrações de glicose, AGNE e T3 para todas as ovelhas gestantes em relação às não gestantes. Não houve diferença entre as ovelhas gestantes de um, dois ou três fetos. As diferenças observadas ocorreram apenas entre ovelhas gestantes e as vazias. Portanto, quando há adequada adaptação neste período de elevado desafio metabólico, os parâmetros bioquímicos aqui considerados independem do número de fetos gestados e podem ser considerados como valores de referência para ovelhas gestantes de um feto ou mais fetos do terço médio de gestação ao primeiro mês pós-parto

    Meta-analysis of type 2 Diabetes in African Americans Consortium

    Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is more prevalent in African Americans than in Europeans. However, little is known about the genetic risk in African Americans despite the recent identification of more than 70 T2D loci primarily by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in individuals of European ancestry. In order to investigate the genetic architecture of T2D in African Americans, the MEta-analysis of type 2 DIabetes in African Americans (MEDIA) Consortium examined 17 GWAS on T2D comprising 8,284 cases and 15,543 controls in African Americans in stage 1 analysis. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) association analysis was conducted in each study under the additive model after adjustment for age, sex, study site, and principal components. Meta-analysis of approximately 2.6 million genotyped and imputed SNPs in all studies was conducted using an inverse variance-weighted fixed effect model. Replications were performed to follow up 21 loci in up to 6,061 cases and 5,483 controls in African Americans, and 8,130 cases and 38,987 controls of European ancestry. We identified three known loci (TCF7L2, HMGA2 and KCNQ1) and two novel loci (HLA-B and INS-IGF2) at genome-wide significance (4.15 × 10(-94)<P<5 × 10(-8), odds ratio (OR)  = 1.09 to 1.36). Fine-mapping revealed that 88 of 158 previously identified T2D or glucose homeostasis loci demonstrated nominal to highly significant association (2.2 × 10(-23) < locus-wide P<0.05). These novel and previously identified loci yielded a sibling relative risk of 1.19, explaining 17.5% of the phenotypic variance of T2D on the liability scale in African Americans. Overall, this study identified two novel susceptibility loci for T2D in African Americans. A substantial number of previously reported loci are transferable to African Americans after accounting for linkage disequilibrium, enabling fine mapping of causal variants in trans-ethnic meta-analysis studies.Peer reviewe
