    Thermal Diffusivities of Functionalized Pentacene Semiconductors

    We have measured the interlayer and in-plane (needle axis) thermal diffusivities of 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-Pn). The needle axis value is comparable to the phonon thermal conductivities of quasi-one dimensional organic metals with excellent pi-orbital overlap, and its value suggests that a significant fraction of heat is carried by optical phonons. Furthermore, the interlayer (c-axis) thermal diffusivity is at least an order of magnitude larger, and this unusual anisotropy implies very strong dispersion of optical modes in the interlayer direction, presumably due to interactions between the silyl-containing side groups. Similar values for both in-plane and interlayer diffusivities have been observed for several other functionalized pentacene semiconductors with related structures.Comment: 9 pages, including 4 figures; submitted to Applied Physics Letter

    Changes in women’s facial skin color over the ovulatory cycle are not detectable by the human visual system

    Human ovulation is not advertised, as it is in several primate species, by conspicuous sexual swellings. However, there is increasing evidence that the attractiveness of women’s body odor, voice, and facial appearance peak during the fertile phase of their ovulatory cycle. Cycle effects on facial attractiveness may be underpinned by changes in facial skin color, but it is not clear if skin color varies cyclically in humans or if any changes are detectable. To test these questions we photographed women daily for at least one cycle. Changes in facial skin redness and luminance were then quantified by mapping the digital images to human long, medium, and shortwave visual receptors. We find cyclic variation in skin redness, but not luminance. Redness decreases rapidly after menstrual onset, increases in the days before ovulation, and remains high through the luteal phase. However, we also show that this variation is unlikely to be detectable by the human visual system. We conclude that changes in skin color are not responsible for the effects of the ovulatory cycle on women’s attractiveness

    Frequency-Dependent Photothermal Measurement of Transverse Thermal Diffusivity of Organic Semiconductors

    We have used a photothermal technique, in which chopped light heats the front surface of a small ( ~ 1 mm2) sample and the chopping frequency dependence of thermal radiation from the back surface is measured with a liquid nitrogen cooled infrared detector. In our system, the sample is placed directly in front of the detector within its dewar. Because the detector is also sensitive to some of the incident light which leaks around or through the sample, measurements are made for the detector signal that is in quadrature with the chopped light. Results are presented for layered crystals of semiconducting 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-pn) and for papers of cellulose nanofibrils coated with semiconducting poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene):poly(styrene-sulfonate) (NFC-PEDOT). For NFC-PEDOT, we have found that the transverse diffusivity, smaller than the in-plane value, varies inversely with thickness, suggesting that texturing of the papers varies with thickness. For TIPS-pn, we have found that the interlayer diffusivity is an order of magnitude larger than the in-plane value, consistent with previous estimates, suggesting that low-frequency optical phonons, presumably associated with librations in the TIPS side-groups, carry most of the heat.Comment: 10 pages including 4 figures.     Low-Temperature Phase Transitions in a Soluble Oligoacene and Their Effect on Device Performance and Stability

    The use of organic semiconductors in high-performance organic field-effect transistors requires a thorough understanding of the effects that processing conditions, thermal, and bias-stress history have on device operation. Here, we evaluate the temperature dependence of the electrical properties of transistors fabricated with 2,8-difluoro-5,11-bis(triethylsilylethynyl)anthradithiophene, a material that has attracted much attention recently due to its exceptional electrical properties. We have discovered a phase transition at T = 205 K and discuss its implications on device performance and stability. We examined the impact of this low-temperature phase transition on the thermodynamic, electrical, and structural properties of both single crystals and thin films of this material. Our results show that while the changes to the crystal structure are reversible, the induced thermal stress yields irreversible degradation of the devices

    Powering Ocean Giants: The Energetics of Shark and Ray Megafauna

    Shark and ray megafauna have crucial roles as top predators in many marine ecosystems, but are currently among the most threatened vertebrates and, based on historical extinctions, may be highly susceptible to future environmental perturbations. However, our understanding of their energetics lags behind that of other taxa. Such knowledge is required to answer important ecological questions and predict their responses to ocean warming, which may be limited by expanding ocean deoxygenation and declining prey availability. To develop bioenergetics models for shark and ray megafauna, incremental improvements in respirometry systems are useful but unlikely to accommodate the largest species. Advances in biologging tools and modelling could help answer the most pressing ecological questions about these iconic species

    Quantitative Analysis of the Density of Trap States at the Semiconductor-Dielectric Interface in Organic Field-Effect Transistors

    The electrical properties of organic field-effect transistors are governed by the quality of the constituting layers, and the resulting interfaces. We compare the properties of the same organic semiconductor film, 2,8-difluoro- 5,11-bis (triethylsilylethynyl) anthradithiophene, with bottom SiO2 dielectric and top Cytop dielectric and find a 10× increase in charge carrier mobility, from 0.17 ± 0.19 cm2 V−1 s−1 to 1.5 ± 0.70 cm2 V−1 s−1, when the polymer dielectric is used. This results from a significant reduction of the trap density of states in the semiconductor band-gap, and a decrease in the contact resistance

    Contemporary carbon fluxes do not reflect the long-term carbon balance for an Atlantic blanket bog

    Peatlands are one of the largest terrestrial stores of carbon. Carbon exchange in peatlands is often assessed solely by measurement of contemporary fluxes; however, these fluxes frequently indicate a much stronger sink strength than that measured by the rate of C accumulation in the peat profile over longer timescales. Here we compare profile-based measurements of C accumulation with the published net ecosystem C balance for the largest peatland area in Britain, the Flow Country of northern Scotland. We estimate the long-term rate of C accumulation to be 15.4 g C m−2 yr−1 for a site where a recent eddy covariance study has suggested contemporary C uptake more than six times greater (99.37 g C m−2 yr−1). Our estimate is supported by two further long-term C accumulation records from nearby sites which give comparable results. We demonstrate that a strong contemporary C sink strength may not equate to a strong long-term sink and explore reasons for this disparity. We recommend that contemporary C sequestration should be viewed in the context of the long-term ecological drivers, such as fires, ecohydrological feedbacks and the changing quality of litter inputs

    HopScotch - a low-power renewable energy base station network for rural broadband access

    The provision of adequate broadband access to communities in sparsely populated rural areas has in the past been severely restricted. In this paper, we present a wireless broadband access test bed running in the Scottish Highlands and Islands which is based on a relay network of low-power base stations. Base stations are powered by a combination of renewable sources creating a low cost and scalable solution suitable for community ownership. The use of the 5~GHz bands allows the network to offer large data rates and the testing of ultra high frequency ``white space'' bands allow expansive coverage whilst reducing the number of base stations or required transmission power. We argue that the reliance on renewable power and the intelligent use of frequency bands makes this approach an economic green radio technology which can address the problem of rural broadband access

    Molecular genetic analysis of the 3p — syndrome

    Molecular genetic analysis of five cases of 3p-syndrome (del(3)(qter-p25:)) was performed to investigate the relationship between the molecular pathology and clinical phenotype. Fluorescence in situ hybridization studies and analysis of polymorphic DNA markers from chromosome 3p25-p26 demonstrated that all four informative cases had distal deletions. However, the extent of the deletion was variable: in two patients with the most extensive deletions the deletion breakpoint mapped between RAF1 and D3S1250, in one patient the deletion breakpoint was between D3S1250 and D3S601, and in two patients the deletion commenced telomeric to D3S601 (and telomeric to D3S1317 in one of these). All five patients displayed the classical features of 3p- syndrome (mental retardation, growth retardation, microcephaly, ptosis and micrognathia) demonstrating that loss of sequences centromeric to D3S1317 is not required for expression of the characteristic 3p- syndrome phenotype. The three patients with the most extensive deletions had cardiac septal defects suggesting that a gene involved in normal cardiac development is contained in the interval D3S1250 and D3S18. The PMCA2 gene is contained within this region and deletion of this gene may cause congenital heart defects. At least three patients were deleted for the von Hippel - Lindau (VHL) disease gene although none had yet developed evidence of VHL disease. We conclude that molecular analysis of 3p- syndrome patients enhances the management of affected patients by identifying those at risk for VHL disease, and can be used to elucidate the critical regions for the 3p- syndrome phenotyp
