A estrutura e desenho
escolar e fora dela” (idem).
A BE desenvolve
School has as its mission to contribute to the development of learning, helping each
pupil to build up his/her own knowledge, promoting the development of skills to overpass
new challenges, making pupils active, self-conscious and critical citizens. These ideas can
also be found in IFLA/UNESCO School Library Manifesto, when it refers that the School
Library has as goal “to create and strengthen children’s reading habits since their early
childhood” (2000, p.2) and adds that it is also its role “to promote Reading, as well as its
resources and services among the educational/ school community and outside it” (idem).
The importance of the School Library and of its services constitutes a demand that
can’t be replaced at school and in the contemporary society, based on information and
knowledge. The School Library develops the skills of its users, promoting lifelong
learning, increasing and varying pupils learning environments (either they are digital or
not) considering its diverse and complementary functions: informative, educational,
cultural and entertaining.
Taking into account these framework, this study presents a case study based on the
work developed by the School Library in terms of Reading skills. Thus, we intended to
analyse the contribution of reading and book promoting activities carried out by the School
Library and their influence on the development of pupils’ reading skills, how they react
and understand these activities and, finally, to examine how these activities are articulated
with other curricular activities developed in the classroom
Through the ages, many have been those who have dedicated their work and
knowledge to the analysis of the organizations. However, the approach of the investigation
pertaining to the school territory only occurred in the last decades and only then the school as
an organization acquired a status of scientific reflection. Likewise, the studies on the gender
question and above all the investigations centered in the analysis of gender in leadership lack
major investigation, especially if we have into account the insignificant representation of
women in directive positions.
It is in this line of investigation that we’ve tried to display a feminine look around the
leadership of women pertaining to school organizations. For its hermeneutic understanding, it
was necessary to appeal to theoretical conceptions developed in this area, even though the
inquiry in the domain of the leadership pertaining to school organizations has been centered in
the undifferentiation of gender. We’ve pointed some heuristic aspects considered of the
greatest importance, according to us, in the management of school organization; we’ve done a
conceptual approach boarding around the leadership theories and we’ve covered the sensitive
territory of the studies of gender.
Afterwards, in the empirical investigation, we characterized a feminine leadership,
trying to enhance aspects of gender, namely in what concerns to the rise in and style of the
leadership practised.
This is the result of an in-depth study based in a qualitative and quantitative
methodology and to accomplish it we’ve resorted to questionnaires by carrying out surveys
and also interviews to collect data
Trends in water quality in the Alqueva irrigation area and its potential effects on soil structure and on crop yields
One of the major threats to the sustainability of irrigated agriculture is the risk of land salinization, due to the reduction in water quality and to the increase of soil salt concentrations leading to crop yield reductions. Therefore, monitoring salinity status of agricultural water resources is increasingly important to prevent soil salinization processes. The Alqueva reservoir constitutes the most important water supply source in Alentejo, a region where agriculture is one of the main activities. Based on the physicochemical characteristics of water collected in nine sampling sites along the Alqueva reservoir, the evolution of water quality for irrigation, and its potential effects on soil structure and on crop yields, was assessed throughout two sampling campaigns, 2006-2007 and 2011-2012. The Maas-Hoffman (MH) and the van Genuchten-Hoffman (GH) models were used to determine the relative yield (Yr) for the main crops grown in the Alqueva irrigation area. Overall, from 2006-2007 to 2011-2012, the results indicated an increment of the ionic concentrations at the water body, more significant for sodium (+55%), chloride (+44%), and magnesium (+30%). The sodium adsorption rate values (SAR) showed an average increase of 36%. The assessment of water quality for agriculture performed for both campaigns, using the FAO guidelines, showed slight to moderate risk of reduced infiltration rates in every site and date, which is particularly significant in fine textured soils, and whenever sprinkler irrigation systems are used. The water collected at some sites and dates had characteristics consistent with a slight to moderate risk of sodium and chloride toxicity when using sprinkler irrigation. The lower Yr estimates (85 to 89%) using both the MH and the GH models occurred for almond, table grape, pumpkin and onion, indicating that attention should be given to sensitive and moderately sensitive crops cultivated in the Alqueva irrigation area, especially in drought years
Non-traditional and traditional engineering students’ academic expectations
This study compares the initial academic expectations of two groups of Portuguese first-year colege students in engineering programs: traditional students and non-traditional students. Non-traditional students were considered all students who assessed Higher Education (HE) with over 23 years of age. Participants included 430 students. Students answered a questionnaire about their expectations regarding experiences in the focusing on five dimensions: Training for career development, Quality of training, Social interaction, Adjustment to social pressure, and Political engagement and citizenship. Results showed that younger students present a profile of overall higher expectations, when compared to older students. Such a difference is more evident in the dimensions Adjustment to social pressure and Social interaction, and weaker in the dimensions Political engagement and citizenship, and Training for career development. Expectations for Quality of training were not different regarding both groups of students.Programa Operacional

Electrochemical treatment of effluent for the removal of contaminants of emergent concern and culturable microorganisms
project CEMOWAS2 (SOE2/P5/F0505)
UIDB/04085/2020
CEECIND/04210/2017The present work aims to study the electrochemical (EC) process applied for the removal of contaminants of emergent concern (CECs) from wastewater after secondary treatment and the effect of the process on the total culturable microorganisms. The EC experiments were performed in a cylindrical open reactor with 500 mL of effluent, and a fixed current density of 8 mA/cm² was applied through mixed metal oxide electrodes. The experiments were conducted in different sets. In the first round (Set 1), the effluent sample was spiked with three CECs (200 ppb each): Caffeine (CAF), carbamazepine (CBZ), and oxybenzone (OXY). For the best treatment period, 6 h, electrodegradation rates ranged from 41 ± 7% for CAF to 95 ± 6% for OXY, with an 87% removal of total culturable microorganisms. In the second round (Set 2), aiming to assess EC process efficiency in a more complex CEC mixture, the effluent was spiked with six more CECs (200 ppb each): Diclofenac (DCF), triclosan (TCS), bisphenol A (BPA), 17β-estradiol (E2), 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), and ibuprofen (IBU), giving a total of nine CECs. In this case, the EC process allowed decreasing the CEC content by 19-100% (below the limit of detection), depending on the effluent samples, and the culturable microorganisms by 99.98% after a 6 h treatment. By contributing to CEC degradation and microorganism removal, the EC process proved to be a viable remediation and disinfection technology for secondary effluent from wastewater treatment plants.publishersversionpublishe
A CONTABILIDADE AMBIENTAL COMO UM NOVO PARADIGMA
A growing social concern over environmental questions should not ignore economic development. Economic development and environmental quality are not opposing factors and one has to make them compatible. A great responsibility for this has to be attributed to companies. Sustainable development has to be promoted, guaranteeing that resources exploration, investments good management, the technological orientation and institutional change form a well-articulated unity, consistent with present needs and future challenges. Application of environmental policies that enhance a set of plans of action of the companies, regarding the environment, has revealed advantages for the ‘green’ companies. Accounting has the role of divulging information on costs and economic and strategic benefits of the adoption of environmental policies. As a consequence of the Financial Accounting limitations, it is the Environmental Accounting that has the responsibility of dealing with all the phenomena resulting from the company’s environmental influence. What are the accounting norms that govern the environmental matters in Portugal? What are the difficulties in measuring environmental phenomena? These are some of the questions that trouble and interest scholars of the Environmental Accounting as a new paradigm of the new times.
Keywords: Environmental policies. Environmental accounting.

Evaluation of the In Vitro Wound-Healing Activity and Phytochemical Characterization of Propolis and Honey
Honey and propolis are natural substances produced by Apis mellifera that contain flavonoids, phenolic acids, and several other phytochemicals. The aim of this study was to phytochemically characterize three different types of honey and propolis, both separately and mixed, and to evaluate their wound-healing activity. Total phenolic compounds and flavonoids were determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu’s and aluminum chloride colorimetric methods, respectively. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by both the DPPH free radical scavenging assay and β-carotene bleaching test, and the anti-inflammatory activity was determined by a protein denaturation method. To evaluate the wound-healing activity of the samples, NHDF cells were subjected to a wound scratch assay. The obtained results showed that dark-brown honey presents a higher concentration of phenolic compounds and flavonoids, as well as higher antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Propolis samples had the highest concentrations in bioactive compounds. Examining the microscopic images, it was possible to verify that the samples promote cell migration, demonstrating the wound-healing potential of honey and propolis.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill.): comparative analysis of biological activity of pulp and peel
A quantidade
A procura
Health concerns and the benefits that food can bring to consumers is a reality
nowadays. The number of tonnes of by-products produced and wasted by
the food industry is one of the major challenges that the European Union is
facing. The continued search for foods that contain compounds potentially
beneficial to health, and the study of these foods and their by-products, can
be one of the solutions for these two major concerns of today's society. In
this work, a comparative analysis was performed between the pulp and the
peel (by-product) of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill., determining its antioxidant
potential, phenolic compounds content and total flavonoids. In 2017, samples
of O. ficus-indica (L.) Mill. were obtained from the Herdade de Peliteiros
(Silveiras, Montemor-o-Novo, Évora). With the obtained results, it was verified
that the by-product presented better results for all the methods used,
except for the reducing power. Therefore, the inclusion of this fruit in a context
of a balanced food plan may contribute to potential health benefits for
consumers. In addition, it shows great potential for the application of its byproduct
in the development of new food products or in food enrichment.
