    Management of false wire worm, Gonocephalum beetle (Tenebrionidae: coleoptera) in chickpea raised under residual moisture conditions

    False wire worm, Gonocephalum indicum, incidence was observed for the first time in severe form in Rabi 2008-09 on chickpea, confined to saline tracts of Vidarbha (MS). Gonocephalum adults inflicts injury near collar region of chickpea resulting in collapsing and drying of plants translating into re-sowing of crop due to poor plantstand. Field study revealed 5.8 – 32.3% damaged plants with lowest damage in Module 9 (Seed treatment with clothianidin 2 gm/kg seed + spaying of chlorpyriphos 2 ml/liter water 20 days after crop emergence), Module 10 (Application of phorate granules 10 kg/ha at sowing + spraying of chlorpyriphos 2 ml/liter water 20 days after crop emergence) and Module 11(Seed treatment with clothianidin 2 gm/kg seed + application of clothianidin granules 200 gm/ha 20 days after crop emergence) with 5.8, 6.2 and 8.7% affected plants. The % drying of plants due to injury was in the range of 4.3 – 21.6 % with lowest in Module 11, Module 10 and Module 9 with 4.3, 6.0 and 6.2 % drying of plants, respectively. Superiority of Module 9 (20.4 q/ha) and Module 11 (19.7 q/ha) was evident in yield, whereas, lowest yield was observed in control plot (13.2 q/ha). Module 9 and Module 11 registered higher net returns of Rs. 13887 and Rs. 9948 per ha, respectively, whereas, Module 9 and Module 10 had highest ICBR of 1: 6.0 indicating the suitability of modules in terms of bioefficacy and cost effectiveness for the management of Gonocephalum in problematic area

    Non Linear Finite Element Method of Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Deep Beam

    This paper describes analysis of deep beams subjected to two point loading with three different L/D ratios (1.5, 1.6, 1.71) using Non-linear Finite element method (ANSYS 9.0 software) in order to investigate the stress and strain distribution pattern at mid-section of the beam. In ANSYS 9.0 software, SOLID 65 and LINK 8 element represent concrete and reinforcing steel bars. Non-linear material properties were defined for both elements .Using ANSYS software Flexural Strains and Stresses were determined at mid-section of the beam and shear stresses near the support of the beam.     The SPTPoL extended cluster survey

    We describe the observations and resultant galaxy cluster catalog from the 2770 deg2 SPTpol Extended Cluster Survey (SPT-ECS). Clusters are identified via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect and confirmed with a combination of archival and targeted follow-up data, making particular use of data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). With incomplete follow-up we have confirmed as clusters 244 of 266 candidates at a detection significance ξ ≥ 5 and an additional 204 systems at 4 4 threshold, and 10% of their measured SZ flux. We associate SZ-selected clusters, from both SPT-ECS and the SPT-SZ survey, with clusters from the DES redMaPPer sample, and we find an offset distribution between the SZ center and central galaxy in general agreement with previous work, though with a larger fraction of clusters with significant offsets. Adopting a fixed Planck-like cosmology, we measure the optical richness-SZ mass (l - M) relation and find it to be 28% shallower than that from a weak-lensing analysis of the DES data-a difference significant at the 4σ level-with the relations intersecting at λ = 60. The SPT-ECS cluster sample will be particularly useful for studying the evolution of massive clusters and, in combination with DES lensing observations and the SPT-SZ cluster sample, will be an important component of future cosmological analyses

    Mapping child growth failure across low- and middle-income countries

    Childhood malnutrition is associated with high morbidity and mortality globally1. Undernourished children are more likely to experience cognitive, physical, and metabolic developmental impairments that can lead to later cardiovascular disease, reduced intellectual ability and school attainment, and reduced economic productivity in adulthood2. Child growth failure (CGF), expressed as stunting, wasting, and underweight in children under five years of age (0�59 months), is a specific subset of undernutrition characterized by insufficient height or weight against age-specific growth reference standards3�5. The prevalence of stunting, wasting, or underweight in children under five is the proportion of children with a height-for-age, weight-for-height, or weight-for-age z-score, respectively, that is more than two standard deviations below the World Health Organization�s median growth reference standards for a healthy population6. Subnational estimates of CGF report substantial heterogeneity within countries, but are available primarily at the first administrative level (for example, states or provinces)7; the uneven geographical distribution of CGF has motivated further calls for assessments that can match the local scale of many public health programmes8. Building from our previous work mapping CGF in Africa9, here we provide the first, to our knowledge, mapped high-spatial-resolution estimates of CGF indicators from 2000 to 2017 across 105 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where 99 of affected children live1, aggregated to policy-relevant first and second (for example, districts or counties) administrative-level units and national levels. Despite remarkable declines over the study period, many LMICs remain far from the ambitious World Health Organization Global Nutrition Targets to reduce stunting by 40 and wasting to less than 5 by 2025. Large disparities in prevalence and progress exist across and within countries; our maps identify high-prevalence areas even within nations otherwise succeeding in reducing overall CGF prevalence. By highlighting where the highest-need populations reside, these geospatial estimates can support policy-makers in planning interventions that are adapted locally and in efficiently directing resources towards reducing CGF and its health implications. © 2020, The Author(s)

    Detection of CMB-cluster lensing using polarization data from SPTpol

    We report the first detection of gravitational lensing due to galaxy clusters using only the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The lensing signal is obtained using a new estimator that extracts the lensing dipole signature from stacked images formed by rotating the cluster-centered Stokes Q U map cutouts along the direction of the locally measured background CMB polarization gradient. Using data from the SPTpol 500     deg 2 survey at the locations of roughly 18 000 clusters with richness λ ≥ 10 from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year-3 full galaxy cluster catalog, we detect lensing at 4.8 σ . The mean stacked mass of the selected sample is found to be ( 1.43 ± 0.40 ) × 10 14 M ⊙ which is in good agreement with optical weak lensing based estimates using DES data and CMB-lensing based estimates using SPTpol temperature data. This measurement is a key first step for cluster cosmology with future low-noise CMB surveys, like CMB-S4, for which CMB polarization will be the primary channel for cluster lensing measurements

    Role of liquid membrane phenomenon in biological actions of ACE inhibitors, captopril and lisinopril

    The liquid membrane phenomenon in angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors namely, captopril and lisinopril has been studied. Hydraulic permeability data have been obtained to demonstrate the existence of the liquid membrane in series with a supporting membrane generated by the ACE inhibitors. Data on the transport of the relevant permeants in presence of the liquid membrane formed by ACE inhibitors indicate that liquid membrane phenomenon is likely to play a significant role in the action of ACE inhibitors

    Genetic variability studies in single and double cross advanced generation segregating progenies of Bhendi [Abelmoschus esculentus (L.)Moench

    An investigation was carried out to study the genetic variability, in fruit yield per plant and its component traits in four singlecross (BH10,BH11,BH12 and BH 13) and three double cross (BH14,BH15 and BH16) F4 and F5 progenies of bhendi at ARS,Hanumanamatti during summer and kharif 2008. The results indicate that, high GCV and PCV values for number of branchesper plant, number of fruits per plant and fruit yield per plant. Moderate GCV and PCV values were recorded for internodallength, fruit length, fruit diameter and fruit weight in both single and double cross F4 and F5 progenies which indicate existenceof wide range of genetic variability in the material evaluated. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was observedfor number of branches per plant, number of fruits per plant and fruit yield per plant in both single and double cross F4 and F5progenies indicating additive gene action in the control of expression of these characters. From the experimental results it wasfound that the amount of variability was more in double cross derived progenies as compared to single cross derived progeniesfor most of the characters studied

    Spray Deposition of PDMS/Candle Soot NPs Composite for Self-Cleaning Superhydrophobic Coating

    The preparation of superhydrophobic coating using cheap candle soot nanoparticles (CS NPs) collected from candle flame is a very novel research topic. A less than 30 nm sized candle soot particles are collected by passing through stainless steel mesh of pore size ̴30 nm. An optimum suspension of CS NPs and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) in chloroform is sprayed on clean glass substrate and dried at 100°C for 1 hour. The coating surface with water contact angle ̴173° and rolling angle ̴ 4° is achieved by spraying suspension of 100 mg CS NPs and 0.3 mL PDMS in chloroform. The stability of superhydrophobic coating is studied by finger-wiping, water jet hitting, water dripping, adhesive tape, and sandpaper abrasion test. Result showed that the coatings prepared with an optimum 100 mg CS NPs in suspension are stable under water jet hitting and water dripping test. The superhydrophobicity is destroyed for four cycles of adhesive tape peeling and seven cycles of sandpaper abrasion tests. The coated substrate showed good self-cleaning performance. The high water repellent and self-cleaning property of the prepared coating can be adopted for industrial applications.This work is financially supported by DST ?
