Assessing sustainability performance of farms: an efficiency approach
Sustainability can be seen as a key element towards a profitable long-term future for farming and rural areas. Strong economic performance should go hand in hand with the sustainable use of natural resources. To assess sustainability, both a clear framework and empirical work measuring, explaining and evaluating contributions towards sustainability are needed. In the first part of this dissertation several existing definitions of sustainability are explained. An overview is also given of the different measurement methods of sustainability performance. Definitions of sustainability are inevitably vague but sustainability draws much of its power and creativity form this ambiguity. The second part of this dissertation presents several empirical applications of measuring farm performance. The first applications measure performance in a traditional economic way, while in the following applications environmental aspects are integrated to measure the sustainability performance of agricultural firms. As a general conclusion, we can summarize that the developed and used methodologies are useful to measure contributions of farms towards a more sustainable use of the available resources. This approach does not indicate whether the overall resource use is sustainable, but how much a company contributes to a more sustainable use of its resources. Not only traditional economic resources such as land, labor or capital are considered but also environmental resources such as direct and indirect energy use and nitrogen use. In this way, the realization of economic value of a farm using a combination of available resources can be analyzed. We can compare the performance of farms but we can also analyze the underlying determinants that can help to explain the difference in sustainable resource use between farms. Furthermore, a simple simulation shows that the approach can be used to compare policy tools or can be used to analyze the impact of certain policy measures to reallocate the resource use from farms realizing less value added to farms realizing more value added with their resources. This will be a challenging but interesting future research topic. A limitation of the current approach is that the total amount of available resources is remained constant at sector level
A quantitative account of genomic island acquisitions in prokaryotes
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Microbial genomes do not merely evolve through the slow accumulation of mutations, but also, and often more dramatically, by taking up new DNA in a process called horizontal gene transfer. These innovation leaps in the acquisition of new traits can take place via the introgression of single genes, but also through the acquisition of large gene clusters, which are termed Genomic Islands. Since only a small proportion of all the DNA diversity has been sequenced, it can be hard to find the appropriate donors for acquired genes via sequence alignments from databases. In contrast, relative oligonucleotide frequencies represent a remarkably stable genomic signature in prokaryotes, which facilitates compositional comparisons as an alignment-free alternative for phylogenetic relatedness.</p> <p>In this project, we test whether Genomic Islands identified in individual bacterial genomes have a similar genomic signature, in terms of relative dinucleotide frequencies, and can therefore be expected to originate from a common donor species.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>When multiple Genomic Islands are present within a single genome, we find that up to 28% of these are compositionally very similar to each other, indicative of frequent recurring acquisitions from the same donor to the same acceptor.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This represents the first quantitative assessment of common directional transfer events in prokaryotic evolutionary history. We suggest that many of the resident Genomic Islands per prokaryotic genome originated from the same source, which may have implications with respect to their regulatory interactions, and for the elucidation of the common origins of these acquired gene clusters.</p
REVISITING ANNA MOSCOWITZ\u27S KROSS\u27S CRITIQUE OF NEW YORK CITY\u27S WOMEN\u27S COURT: THE CONTINUED PROBLEM OF SOLVING THE PROBLEM OF PROSTITUTION WITH SPECIALIZED CRIMINAL COURTS
This article explores New York City\u27s non-traditional, judicially based response to prostitution. This article first recounts the history of New York City’s Women’s Court. It then examines the work of the Midtown Community Court, the “problem-solving court” established in 1993 to address criminal issues, like prostitution, in Midtown Manhattan. It also discusses the renewed concerns about sex work in New York and describe the movement, propelled by modern reformers, to address prostitution through specialty courts. It then contrasts the shared features and attributes of the Women’s Court and Midtown Court models. Finally, the article urges modern reformers to step back from the problem-solving court movement and their call for the creation of more such specialized criminal courts
Do PGI integrated farms perform better? The case of the beef farms in Spain
European rural development policy is gaining in importance through one of its key instruments, the Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) system, which is designed to improve quality standards. Previous research has shown that PGI-certified beef farms tend to be more extensively managed operations that are better adapted to mountainous areas. This paper describes a comparative study of two production systems, one with PGI certification and one without, focusing on a number of economic variables. The results show a positive association between PGI production and profitability. In efficiency terms, non-certified farms show better pure technical efficiency scores, while PGI-certified holdings score higher on scale efficiency
‘The Curse of the Caribbean’? Agency’s impact on the productivity of sugar estates on St. Vincent and the Grenadines, 1814-1829
This study estimates agency’s impact on sugar plantation productivity using a unique early 19th century panel data set from St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Results of fixed effects models, combined with a qualitative and quantitative analysis of potential endogeneity of the agency variable, provide no evidence that estates managed by agents were less productive than those managed by their owners. We discuss the results in the context of the historical and recent, revisionary, interpretations of agency and the emergence of managerial hierarchies in the Atlantic economy
To tax or to ban? A discrete choice experiment to elicit public preferences for phasing out glyphosate use in agriculture
In 2023, the European Union will vote on the reauthorization of glyphosate use, renewed in 2017 despite concern on impacts on the environment and public health. A ban is supported by several Member States but rejected by most farmers. What are citizens’ preferences to phase out glyphosate? To assess whether taxation could be an alternative to a ban, we conducted a discrete choice experiment in five European countries. Our results reveal that the general public is strongly willing to pay for a reduction in glyphosate use. However, while 75.5% of respondents stated to support a ban in the pre-experimental survey, experimental results reveal that in 73.35% of cases, earmarked taxation schemes are preferred when they lead to a strong reduction in glyphosate use for an increase in food price lower than that induced by a ban. When glyphosate reduction is balanced against its costs, a tax may be preferred
A Multi-Platform Flow Device for Microbial (Co-) Cultivation and Microscopic Analysis
Novel microbial cultivation platforms are of increasing interest to researchers in academia and industry. The development of materials with specialized chemical and geometric properties has opened up new possibilities in the study of previously unculturable microorganisms and has facilitated the design of elegant, high-throughput experimental set-ups. Within the context of the international Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition, we set out to design, manufacture, and implement a flow device that can accommodate multiple growth platforms, that is, a silicon nitride based microsieve and a porous aluminium oxide based microdish. It provides control over (co-)culturing conditions similar to a chemostat, while allowing organisms to be observed microscopically. The device was designed to be affordable, reusable, and above all, versatile. To test its functionality and general utility, we performed multiple experiments with Escherichia coli cells harboring synthetic gene circuits and were able to quantitatively study emerging expression dynamics in real-time via fluorescence microscopy. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the device provides a unique environment for the cultivation of nematodes, suggesting that the device could also prove useful in microscopy studies of multicellular microorganisms
