Complex Carbohydrates in the Cyst Wall of Histriculus similis
The ultrastructure of the cyst wall has been studied in severa! hypotrichous ciliates. In Oxytrichafallax (Grimes, 1973),Pleurotricha sp. (Matsusaka, 1976), Stylonychia mytilus (Walker et al., 1975), Gastrostyla steinii (Walker et al., 1980) and Laurentiella acuminata (Gutierrez et al., l 980), the cyst wall is composed of four layers called, from outside to inside :the ectocyst, meso cyst, endocyst and granular layers. In these ciliates a resorption of cilia and kinetosomes occurs during encystment, and the mature cyst is termed kinetosome resorbing. Diophrys scutum (Walker & Maugel , 1980) has a three layered cyst wall and the mature cyst is non kinetosome resorbing.
In the present work a structural and cytochemical study of the cyst wall in Histriculus similis
was carried out by means of light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy
DEFINICIÓN DE UN PROTOCOLO PARA LA REALIZACIÓN DE AUDITORÍAS ENERGÉTICAS EN INSTALACIONES GANADERAS: APLICACIÓN EN PEQUEÑAS Y MEDIANAS EXPLOTACIONES
En el presente trabajo se muestran los resultados de un proyecto desarrollado en España
bajo los auspicios del Instituto para la Diversificación y Ahorro de la Energía (IDAE), el Ente
Regional de la Energía de Castilla y León (EREN) y la Unión de Pequeños Agricultores (UPA), y
aplicado en la región de Castilla y León, zona con un perfil productivo eminentemente agrícola y
ganadero, cuyo objetivo fue la definición de un protocolo para la realización de auditorías energéticas
en instalaciones ganaderas, focalizando aquellas de tamaño pequeño y mediano. En el protocolo se
desarrolló la metodología para la caracterización y la formulación de mejoras de los siguientes
elementos: Características constructivas, suministros energéticos, iluminación, motores eléctricos,
calefacción, refrigeración y ventilación, energías renovables, equipamientos de aprovechamiento
energético de residuos y equipamientos de control. El protocolo fue validado con la realización de
auditorías energéticas en 15 explotaciones: 5 de vacuno lechero, 5 de ovino lechero, 3 de porcino de
engorde y 2 de pollos de carne. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que con las medidas de eficiencia
energética propuestas se consiguen ahorros medios en los consumos energéticos del 18 %, lo cual
significa una disminución media del coste económico del 24,28 %
Fractal dimension analysis of grey matter in multiple sclerosis
The fractal dimension (FD) is a quantitative parameter that characterizes the morphometric variability of a
complex object. Among other applications, FD has been used to identify abnormalities of the human brain in
conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including white matter abnormalities in patients with
Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Extensive grey matter (GM) pathology has been recently identified in MS and it
appears to be a key factor in long-term disability. The aim of the present work was to assess whether FD
measurement of GM in T1 MRI sequences can identify GM abnormalities in patients with MS in the early
phase of the disease. A voxel-based morphometry approach optimized for MS was used to obtain the
segmented brain, where we later calculated the three-dimensional FD of the GM in MS patients and healthy
controls.We found that patients with MS had a significant increase in the FD of the GM compared to controls.
Such differences were present even in patients with short disease durations, including patients with first
attacks of MS. In addition, the FD of the GM correlated with T1 and T2 lesion load, but not with GM atrophy
or disability. The FD abnormalities of the GM here detected differed from the previously published FD of the
white matter in MS, suggesting that different pathological processes were taking place in each structure.
These results indicate that GM morphology is abnormal in patients with MS and that this alteration appears
early in the course of the disease
Plasma coenzyme Q10 status is impaired in selected genetic conditions.
Identifying diseases displaying chronic low plasma Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ) values may be important to prevent possible cardiovascular dysfunction. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate plasma CoQ concentrations in a large cohort of pediatric and young adult patients. We evaluated plasma CoQ values in 597 individuals (age range 1 month to 43 years, average 11 years), studied during the period 2005-2016. Patients were classified into 6 different groups: control group of healthy participants, phenylketonuric patients (PKU), patients with mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS), patients with other inborn errors of metabolism (IEM), patients with neurogenetic diseases, and individuals with neurological diseases with no genetic diagnosis. Plasma total CoQ was measured by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection and ultraviolet detection at 275 nm. ANOVA with Bonferroni correction showed that plasma CoQ values were significantly lower in the PKU and MPS groups than in controls and neurological patients. The IEM group showed intermediate values that were not significantly different from those of the controls. In PKU patients, the Chi-Square test showed a significant association between having low plasma CoQ values and being classic PKU patients. The percentage of neurogenetic and other neurological patients with low CoQ values was low (below 8%). In conclusión, plasma CoQ monitoring in selected groups of patients with different IEM (especially in PKU and MPS patients, but also in IEM under protein-restricted diets) seems advisable to prevent the possibility of a chronic blood CoQ suboptimal status in such groups of patients
All-sky Search for High-Energy Neutrinos from Gravitational Wave Event GW170104 with the ANTARES Neutrino Telescope
Advanced LIGO detected a significant gravitational wave signal (GW170104)
originating from the coalescence of two black holes during the second
observation run on January 4, 2017. An all-sky high-energy
neutrino follow-up search has been made using data from the ANTARES neutrino
telescope, including both upgoing and downgoing events in two separate
analyses. No neutrino candidates were found within s around the GW
event time nor any time clustering of events over an extended time window of
months. The non-detection is used to constrain isotropic-equivalent
high-energy neutrino emission from GW170104 to less than
erg for a spectrum

Search for charginos in e+e- interactions at sqrt(s) = 189 GeV
An update of the searches for charginos and gravitinos is presented, based on
a data sample corresponding to the 158 pb^{-1} recorded by the DELPHI detector
in 1998, at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV. No evidence for a signal was
found. The lower mass limits are 4-5 GeV/c^2 higher than those obtained at a
centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV. The (\mu,M_2) MSSM domain excluded by
combining the chargino searches with neutralino searches at the Z resonance
implies a limit on the mass of the lightest neutralino which, for a heavy
sneutrino, is constrained to be above 31.0 GeV/c^2 for tan(beta) \geq 1.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figure
