Early Postoperative Monitoring of the Liver Graft

Liver transplantation (LT) is a common current technique for end-stage liver disease. Complications after the surgical procedure, though uncommon, can be of very different origin and can also be severe enough to lead to liver and multiorgan failure and finally graft loss and/or recipient’s death. Intensivists and the surgical team must be familiarized with these early complications to detect them as soon as possible in order to use the best diagnostic tools and take the best therapeutic measures to restore anatomical integrity and organ function to optimize the liver graft. In this chapter, we present an updated state of the art for efficiently tackling with all different, most usual complications that an LT patient can present during early postoperative period

Educar para la Participación Ciudadana. Un Reto para la Escuela del Siglo XXI

Nuestro mundo tiene graves problemas que deben ser afrontados con la participación de los ciudadanos. Ello exige la construcción de una ciudadanía verdaderamente participativa. La sociedad espera de la escuela que contribuya a educar para este tipo de ciudadanía, pero la escuela actual no puede responder adecuadamente a este requerimiento ni es la única institución responsable de este objetivo. En todo caso, hay interesantes programas y propuestas educativas que, pese a sus dificultades, pueden contribuir a la formación de los alumnos para ser ciudadanos participativos y comprometidos con los problemas sociales

Neck cystic lymphangioma in an adult

[ES] Los linfangiomas o higromas quísticos son tumores benignos e infrecuentes de la infancia con excepcional aparición en la edad adulta. Se localizan de forma preferente a nivel cervicofacial. Se clasifican como tumores vasculares con origen en el sistema linfático. El tratamiento de elección es la cirugía o la escleroterapia, según los casos. Presentamos el caso de un linfangioma cervical en adulto que recibió tratamiento quirúrgico en nuestro servicio. [EN] Lymphangiomas or cystic hygromas are benign and infrequent in childhood with exceptional occurrence in adulthood. Preferentially located at cervicofacial. They are classified as vascular tumors arising in the lymphatic system. The treatment of choice is surgery or sclerotherapy. We report the case of a cervical lymphangioma in adults who received surgical treatment in our department

Management of New Special Devices for Intubation in Difficult Airway Situations

Difficult airway management in critically ill patients has serious implications, as failing to secure a stable airway can lead to a brain injury or even death. Early recognition of a difficult airway can allow the clinician to minimize the potential morbid-mortality. In this chapter, we describe all about the common scenarios that we may tackle when we need to secure a patent airway. It is important to know common definitions about the airway, pre-visualize potential problems and knowing how to be aware of the different pathways on managing and solving the different problems that clinicians may face. It is highlighted to know all the different medical equipment and medication used when an airway is suspected not to be easy to manage or when problems arrive without warning and the practitioner needs to rapidly change the plan on the go. We discuss the current most relevant guidelines and literature about this subject trying to give a practical approach

Las transformaciones de la estructura de la población activa en los núcleos rurales del entorno de Cáceres

El presente artículo se planteó en un primer momento con el objetivo único de analizar las transformaciones generadas por la ciudad y capital de Cáceres sobre su entorno más inmediato. En este sentido, se trataba de continuar una serie de trabajos ya realizados por algunos miembros del Departamento anteriormente y por nosotros mismos, en especial del Dr. Campesino Fernández y del Dr. Barrientos Alfageme . En segundo lugar, se pretendía estudiar, dentro del área de influencia de Cáceres, las interacciones con su entorno más próximo. Comprobar hasta qué punto una ciudad puede organizar el espacio rural que le rodea. Y ver, en definitiva, los factores y causas que determinan toda la serie de transformaciones acaecidas en la última década fundamentalmente por el progreso y mayor grado de interacción. Sin embargo, tras los resultados de las primeras informaciones recogidas, ya se dejaron entrever una serie de profundas transformaciones, que tienen su reflejo más claro en la estructura de la poblaci6n activa y en las modificaciones de este espacio rural. Será en estos aspectos en los que hagamos mayor hincapié, aun sin olvidar otras cuestiones, también de interés, pero que sólo enunciaremos o plantearemos por la brevedad que exigen estos artículos.This article was raised in a first moment with the sole objective of analysing the changes generated by the city and capital of Cáceres on their immediate environment. In this sense, it was a continuation of a series of work already done by some members of the Department previously and for ourselves, in particular Dr. Peasant Fernández and Dr. Barrientos Alfageme . In the second place, it was intended to study, within the area of influence of Cáceres, interactions with their environment. The extent to which a city can organize the rural space that surrounds it. And see, in the final analysis, the causes and factors that determine the entire series of transformations in the last decade, mainly by the progress and greater degree of interaction. Preclinical Efficacy of Endoglin-Targeting Antibody–Drug Conjugates for the Treatment of Ewing Sarcoma

[EN] Endoglin (ENG; CD105) is a coreceptor of the TGFb family that is highly expressed in proliferating endothelial cells. Often coopted by cancer cells, ENG can lead to neo-angiogenesis and vasculogenic mimicry in aggressive malignancies. It exists both as a transmembrane cell surface protein, where it primarily interacts with TGFb, and as a soluble matricellular protein (sENG) when cleaved by matrix metal-loproteinase 14 (MMP14). High ENG expression has been associated with poor prognosis in Ewing sarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer that primarily occurs in adolescents and young adults. However, the therapeutic value of ENG targeting has not been fully explored in this disease. Experimental Design: We characterized the expression pattern of transmembrane ENG, sENG, and MMP14 in preclinical and clinical samples. Subsequently, the antineoplastic potential of two novel ENG-targeting monoclonal antibody–drug conjugates (ADC), OMTX503 and OMTX703, which differed only by their drug payload (nigrin-b A chain and cytolysin, respectively), was assessed in cell lines and preclinical animal models of Ewing sarcoma. Results: Both ADCs suppressed cell proliferation in proportion to the endogenous levels of ENG observed in vitro. Moreover, the ADCs significantly delayed tumor growth in Ewing sarcoma cell line–derived xenografts and patient-derived xenografts in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusions: Taken together, these studies demonstrate potent preclinical activity of first-in-class anti-ENG ADCs as a nascent strategy to eradicate Ewing sarcoma

Es conocido que España es primer país productor de aceite de oliva del mundo, con un 40 % de la producción mundial y el 50 % de la producción de la Unión Europea, siendo la provincia de Jaén, con el 38,4 % de la producción española, la mayor zona productora del mundo en aceite de oliva. Sin embargo, se trata de un sector en el que la escasa profesionalización es, tal vez, su mayor debilidad.La Universidad de Jaén, consciente del importante papel que ha de jugar como Institución dinamizadora del desarrollo de su entorno, en el que el sector del olivar y del aceite de oliva tiene una enorme importancia, considera que es urgente formar titulados universitarios de grado superior que posean conocimientos integrales y solventes en olivicultura y elaiotecnia de modo que incorporados a las empresas del sector del olivar y el aceite de oliva o creando las suyas propias, lo modernicen y desarrollen, contribuyendo a dotarlo de cultura empresarial y al desarrollo socioeconómico y, por ende, al bienestar de los ciudadanos de la provincia
