    Rotational joint assembly for the prosthetic leg

    A rotational joint assembly for a prosthetic leg has been devised, which enables an artificial foot to rotate slightly when a person is walking, running or turning. The prosthetic leg includes upper and lower tubular members with the rotational joint assembly interposed between them. The assembly includes a restrainer mechanism which consists of a pivotably mounted paddle element. This device applies limiting force to control the rotation of the foot and also restores torque to return the foot back to its initial position

    Unknotting information from Heegaard Floer homology

    We use Heegaard Floer homology to obtain bounds on unknotting numbers. This is a generalisation of Ozsváth and Szabó's obstruction to unknotting number one. We determine the unknotting numbers of 910, 913, 935, 938, 1053, 10101 and 10120; this completes the table of unknotting numbers for prime knots with crossing number nine or less. Our obstruction uses a refined version of Montesinos' theorem which gives a Dehn surgery description of the branched double cover of a knot

    Could parental rules play a role in the association between short sleep and obesity in young children?

    Short sleep duration is associated with obesity in young children. This study develops the hypothesis that parental rules play a role in this association. Participants were 3-year-old children and their parents, recruited at nursery schools in socioeconomically deprived and non-deprived areas of a North-East England town. Parents were interviewed to assess their use of sleep, television-viewing and dietary rules, and given diaries to document their child's sleep for 4 days/5 nights. Children were measured for height, weight, waist circumference and triceps and subscapular skinfold thicknesses. One-hundred and eight families participated (84 with complete sleep data and 96 with complete body composition data). Parental rules were significantly associated together, were associated with longer night-time sleep and were more prevalent in the non-deprived-area compared with the deprived-area group. Television-viewing and dietary rules were associated with leaner body composition. Parental rules may in part confound the association between night-time sleep duration and obesity in young children, as rules cluster together across behavioural domains and are associated with both sleep duration and body composition. This hypothesis should be tested rigorously in large representative samples

    A microgravity isolation mount

    The design and preliminary testing of a system for isolating microgravity sensitive payloads from spacecraft vibrational and impulsive disturbances is discussed. The Microgravity Isolation Mount (MGIM) concept consists of a platform which floats almost freely within a limited volume inside the spacecraft, but which is constrained to follow the spacecraft in the long term by means of very weak springs. The springs are realized magnetically and form part of a six degree of freedom active magnetic suspension system. The latter operates without any physical contact between the spacecraft and the platform itself. Power and data transfer is also performed by contactless means. Specifications are given for the expected level of input disturbances and the tolerable level of platform acceleration. The structural configuration of the mount is discussed and the design of the principal elements, i.e., actuators, sensors, control loops and power/data transfer devices are described. Finally, the construction of a hardware model that is being used to verify the predicted performance of the MGIM is described

    Genomic heterogeneity and prevalence of hepandensovirus in Penaeus esculentus from Western Australia, and P. merguiensis from the Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia

    Decapod Hepandensovirus 1 (HDV), formerly known as hepatopancreatic parvovirus, has been associated with stunting, lowered production and outright mortalities in prawns in aquaculture. Despite the fact that broodstock are sourced and aquaculture farms are planned in the regions of northern and Western Australia, data on these parvoviruses from this region are limited. The prevalence of HDV in Penaeus esculentus and Penaeus merguiensis is moderate (34–51%) in southern Western Australia, Exmouth Gulf and the Gulf of Carpentaria but statistically higher (P < 0.05) in Shark Bay (82%). We speculate this is due to the topography of Shark Bay combined with the currents of the Indian Ocean gyre (IOG). Despite an on average 8–12% genomic heterogeneity, the nucleotide sequences of HDV in WA most closely align with HDV in regions associated with the IOG; Thailand, India, Tanzania, Madagascar; eastern Asia, Korea and less commonly, with sequences from the eastern coast of Australia. This potentially changes the paradigm of a single strain of HDV being ubiquitous in Australia and there was little risk in moving broodstock from WA to the eastern states, so there was no testing of broodstock for HDV. There is no strong evidence to clarify whether the strain of HDV in WA P. esculentus came from either its’ nearest genetic relatives, P. monodon or P. semisulcatus or from P. merguiensis from the Solanderian province of Australia. P. esculentus HDV appears to be most related to strains within the IOG. The HDV nucleotide heterogeneity of wild prawns contrasts strongly to studies undertaken with prawns from aquaculture where genetic selection may have occurred
