    A Grounded Theory Approach to Understanding Mu-Fi Interventions on the Digital Divide

    Grounded theory is the most rigorous method of providing preliminary research in an area where research is scarce. Using grounded theory, this paper explores the extent to a recent government initiative failed to achieve its goal. Specifically, the study explored the role of U.S. municipal wireless broadband networks (Mu-Fi) in bridging the so-called “digital divide.” Grounded theory was useful as it allowed the researcher to present an interdisciplinary and holistic vision of Mu-Fi vis-à-vis a complex and evolving division between groups with access to ICT to those without.     Keeping Promises: Municipal communities struggle to fulfill promises to narrow the digital divide with Municipal Community Wireless Networks

    Some public elites assert that the digital divide is a serious social problem and that governments must intervene by affording wireless solutions to improve this social ill.  Few studies, however, examine the relationship between the claims-making activities around such interventions, specifically in reference to closing the digital divide, and the perceptions of the actual impact of those initiatives on this divide.  We bring together two data sets.  The first dataset is from a previous study examining the public rhetoric surrounding these initiatives vis-à-vis the digital divide.  The latter is part of a much larger study on the network’s impact on the divide.  We conclude that these networks are necessary but insufficient in bridging the gap

    COAXING AN INFORMATION SOCIETY IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: THE RISE AND STEEP FALL OF A TECHNOLOGY PARK’S UNIVERSITY RESEARCH CENTER

    ICTs are tools that help fuel the processes underpinning the daily activities of an information society engine. Latin American communities are using these tools in the form of policies, strategies and programs to participate in the digital global economy. The Dominican Republic is an example of a country seeking to be a key player in this regional market. This paper discusses the attempts by a technology park’s semi-public university to launch an ICT research center. The study is based on a rich auto-ethnographic account by the author’s own experience as the chief coordinator of this center. Overall, the paper provides an interesting story of the challenges faced in launching a particular ICT research center, which can be used as lessons to many other research centers in less developed countries.As TICs são ferramentas que ajudam a "azeitar" os processos em que se baseiam as atividades diárias de uma sociedade da informação. Comunidades latino-americanas têm utilizado essas ferramentas na forma de políticas, estratégias e programas para participar da economia digital global. A República Dominicana é um exemplo de país que procura se transformar em um protagonista no mercado regional. Este artigo discute as tentativas de uma universidade semi-pública em um parque tecnológico de implantar um centro de pesquisas em TICs. O estudo envolveu um procedimento auto-entográfico, em que a experiência do próprio autor como coordenador chefe deste centro é analisada. O artigo apresenta uma história interessante dos desafios enfrentados na implantação do centro de pesquisas em TICs, que pode servir de ensinamento para muitos outros centros de pesquisa em países menos desenvolvidos

    Dark Matter Searches Using NaI(Tl) at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory: Past, Present and Future

    Sodium Iodide Thallium doped (NaI(Tl)) scintillation detectors have been applied to the direct searches for dark matter since the 1980s and have produced one of the most challenging results in the field-the observation by the DAMA/LIBRA collaboration of an annual modulation in the detection rate for more than twenty cycles. This result is very difficult to reconcile with negative results derived from other experiments using a large variety of target materials and detection techniques. However, it has been neither confirmed nor refuted in a model independent way up to the present. Such a model independent test of the DAMA/LIBRA result is the goal of the ANAIS-112 experiment, presently in the data taking phase at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory in Spain. ANAIS-112 design and operation leans on the expertise acquired at the University of Zaragoza in direct searches for Dark Matter particles using different targets and techniques and in particular using NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors for about thirty years, which are reviewed in the first section of this manuscript. In addition to presenting the status and more recent results of the ANAIS-112 experiment, open research lines, continuing this effort, will be presented

    From ANAIS-25 towards ANAIS-250

    The ANAIS (Annual modulation with NaI(Tl) Scintillators) experiment aims at the confirmation of the DAMA/LIBRA signal using the same target and technique at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC). 250 kg of ultra pure NaI(Tl) crystals will be used as target, divided into 20 modules, 12.5 kg mass each, and coupled to two high efficiency photomultiplier tubes from Hamamatsu. The ANAIS-25 set-up at the LSC consists of two prototypes, amounting 25 kg NaI(Tl), grown from a powder having a potassium level under the limit of our analytical techniques, and installed in a convenient shielding at the LSC. The background has been carefully analyzed and main results will be summarized in this paper, focusing on the alpha contamination identified in the prototypes and the related background contributions. Status of fulfillment of ANAIS experimental goals and prospects for the building of ANAIS-250 experiment will be also revised

    Antibióticos empíricos para la neumonía adquirida en la comunidad en pacientes adultos: Una revisión sistemática y un metaanálisis en red

    Objetivo: El objetivo principal de este metaanálisis en red es identificar el antibiótico empírico (Em-ATB) con mayor probabilidad de ser el mejor (HPBB) en términos de (1) tasa de curación y (2) tasa de mortalidad en pacientes hospitalizados con neumonía adquirida en la comunidad (NAC) . Método: Criterios de inclusión: (1) pacientes adultos (>16 años) diagnosticados de NAC que requirieron hospitalización; (2) aleatorizados a al menos dos Em-ATB diferentes, (3) que informen de la tasa de curación y (4) que estén escritos en inglés o español. Criterios de exclusión: (1) protocolo de antibióticos ambiguo y (2) publicados exclusivamente en formato resumen o carta. Fuentes de datos: Medline, Embase, Cochrane y revisiones de citas desde el 1 de enero de 2000 hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2018. Riesgo de sesgo: Herramienta de Cochrane. Calidad de la revisión sistemática (RS): A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews-2. Certeza de la evidencia: Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation. Análisis estadísticos: método frecuentista realizado con la biblioteca 'netmeta', paquete R. Resultados: se incluyeron 27 ensayos controlados aleatorizados (ECA) de las 41.307 citas seleccionadas inicialmente. En cuanto al riesgo de sesgo, más de una cuarta parte de los estudios presentaron riesgo bajo y ningún estudio presentó riesgo alto en todos los dominios. La calidad de la RS es moderada. Para la curación, se construyeron dos redes. Así, dos Em-ATB tienen la HPBB: cetarolina 600 mg (dos veces al día) y piperacilina 2000 mg (dos veces al día). Para la mortalidad, se construyeron tres redes. Así, tres Em-ATB tienen la HPBB: ceftriaxona 2000 mg (una vez al día) más levofloxacino 500 (dos veces al día), ertapenem 1000 mg (dos veces al día) y amikacina 250 mg (dos veces al día) más claritromicina 500 mg (dos veces al día). La certeza de la evidencia para cada resultado es moderada. Conclusiones: Para la tasa de curación, ceftarolina y piperacilina son las opciones con la HPBB. Sin embargo, para la tasa de mortalidad, las opciones son ceftriaxona más levofloxacino, ertapenem y amikacina más claritromicina. Parece necesario realizar un ECA que compare los tratamientos con el HPBB para cada evento (curación o mortalidad) (CRD42017060692).Objective: The main aim of this network meta-analysis is to identify the empiric antibiotic (Em-ATB) with the highest probability of being the best (HPBB) in terms of (1) cure rate and (2) mortality rate in hospitalised patients with community acquired pneumonia (CAP) . Method: Inclusion criteria: (1) adult patients (>16 years old) diagnosed with CAP that required hospitalisation; (2) randomised to at least two different Em-ATBs, (3) that report cure rate and (4) are written in English or Spanish. Exclusion criteria: (1) ambiguous antibiotics protocol and (2) published exclusively in abstract or letter format. Data sources: Medline, Embase, Cochrane and citation reviews from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2018. Risk of bias: Cochrane's tool. Quality of the systematic review (SR): A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews-2. Certainity of the evidence: Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation. Statistical analyses: frequentist method performed with the 'netmeta' library, R package. Results: 27 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) from the initial 41 307 screened citations were included. Regarding the risk of bias, more than one quarter of the studies presented low risk and no study presented high risk in all domains. The SR quality is moderate. For cure, two networks were constructed. Thus, two Em-ATBs have the HPBB: cetaroline 600 mg (two times a day) and piperacillin 2000 mg (two times a day). For mortality, three networks were constructed. Thus, three Em-ATBs have the HPBB: ceftriaxone 2000 mg (once a day) plus levofloxacin 500 (two times a day), ertapenem 1000 mg (two times a day) and amikacin 250 mg (two times a day) plus clarithromycin 500 mg (two times a day). The certainity of evidence for each results is moderate. Conclusion: For cure rate, ceftaroline and piperaciline are the options with the HPBB. However, for mortality rate, the options are ceftriaxone plus levofloxacin, ertapenem and amikacin plus clarithromycin. It seems necessary to conduct an RCT that compares treatments with the HPBB for each event (cure or mortality) (CRD42017060692)

    Plasma Levels of Endocannabinoids and Their Analogues Are Related to Specific Fecal Bacterial Genera in Young Adults: Role in Gut Barrier Integrity

    Objective: To investigate the association of plasma levels of endocannabinoids with fecal microbiota.Methods: Plasma levels of endocannabinoids, anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), as well as their eleven analogues, and arachidonic acid (AA), were measured using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry in 92 young adults. DNA extracted from stool samples was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Lipopolysaccharide levels were measured in plasma samples.Results: Plasma levels of endocannabinoids and their analogues were not related to beta or alpha diversity indexes. Plasma levels of AEA and related N-acylethanolamines correlated positively with the relative abundance of Faecalibacterium genus (all rho >= 0.26, p = 0.22, p = 0.24, p = 0.27, p Conclusion: Plasma levels of endocannabinoids and their analogues are correlated to specific fecal bacterial genera involved in maintaining gut barrier integrity in young adults. This suggests that plasma levels of endocannabinoids and their analogues may play a role in the gut barrier integrity in young adults.</p

    Infection and coinfection by human papillomavirus, Epstein–Barr virus and Merkel cell polyomavirus in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx: a retrospective study

    Background Human papillomavirus (HPV) is recognized as an important risk factor for laryngeal carcinogenesis. Although HPV-16 and 18 have been strongly implicated, the presence of other high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) genotypes or the coinfection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) or Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPV) may increase the risk, but their etiological association has not been definitively established. Methods We characterized the genotype-specific HPV and the frequency of EBV and MCPV infections through the detection of their DNA in 195 laryngeal specimens of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) histologically confirmed. Results HPV DNA was detected in 93 (47.7%) specimens. HPV-11 was the most frequent with 68 cases (73.1%), and HPV-52 was the most frequently HR-HPV found with 51 cases, which corresponds to 54.8% of all HPV-positive specimens. EBV DNA was detected in 54 (27.7%) tumor tissue specimens of which 25 (46.3%) were in coinfection with HPV. MCPV DNA was detected only in 11 (5.6%) cases of which 5 (45.4%) were in coinfection with an HR-HPV. No association between the presence of DNA of the three examined viruses and the patient smoking habits, alcohol consumption, age, the keratinization status, differentiation grade, or localization of the tumor in the larynx were found. Discussion HPV-52 was the most prevalent HR-HPV, which may suggest that this and other genotypes in addition to HPV-16 and 18 could be considered for prophylaxis. However, further studies including non-cancer larynx cases and the evaluation of other molecular markers and viral co-infection mechanisms are needed to determine the role of the different HR-HPV genotypes, EBV, and MCPV in the etiology of SCC of the larynx

    Expansion of Signal Transduction Pathways in Fungi by Extensive Genome Duplication

    [EN] Plants and fungi use light and other signals to regulate development, growth, and metabolism. The fruiting bodies of the fungus Phycomyces blakesleeanus are single cells that react to environmental cues, including light, but the mechanisms are largely unknown [1]. The related fungus Mucor circinelloides is an opportunistic human pathogen that changes its mode of growth upon receipt of signals from the environment to facilitate pathogenesis [2]. Understanding how these organisms respond to environmental cues should provide insights into the mechanisms of sensory perception and signal transduction by a single eukaryotic cell, and their role in pathogenesis. We sequenced the genomes of P. blakesleeanus and M. circinelloides and show that they have been shaped by an extensive genome duplication or, most likely, a whole-genome duplication (WGD), which is rarely observed in fungi [3-6]. We show that the genome duplication has expanded gene families, including those involved in signal transduction, and that duplicated genes have specialized, as evidenced by differences in their regulation by light. The transcriptional response to light varies with the developmental stage and is still observed in a photoreceptor mutant of P. blakesleeanus. A phototropic mutant of P. blakesleeanus with a heterozygous mutation in the photoreceptor gene madA demonstrates that photosensor dosage is important for the magnitude of signal transduction. We conclude that the genome duplication provided the means to improve signal transduction for enhanced perception of environmental signals.
