NGC 1624-2: A slowly rotating, X-ray luminous Of?cp star with an extraordinarily strong magnetic field
This paper presents a first observational investigation of the faint Of?cp
star NGC 1624-2, yielding important new constraints on its spectral and
physical characteristics, rotation, magnetic field strength, X-ray emission and
magnetospheric properties. Modeling the spectrum and spectral energy
distribution, we conclude that NGC 1624-2 is a main sequence star of mass M
{\simeq} 30 M{\odot}, and infer an effective temperature of 35 {\pm} 2 kK and
log g = 4.0 {\pm} 0.2. Based on an extensive time series of optical spectral
observations we report significant variability of a large number of spectral
lines, and infer a unique period of 157.99 {\pm} 0.94 d which we interpret as
the rotational period of the star. We report the detection of a very strong -
5.35 {\pm} 0.5 kG - longitudinal magnetic field , coupled with probable
Zeeman splitting of Stokes I profiles of metal lines confirming a surface field
modulus of 14 {\pm} 1 kG, consistent with a surface dipole of polar
strength >~ 20 kG. This is the largest magnetic field ever detected in an
O-type star, and the first report of Zeeman splitting of Stokes I profiles in
such an object. We also report the detection of reversed Stokes V profiles
associated with weak, high-excitation emission lines of O iii, which we propose
may form in the close magnetosphere of the star. We analyze archival Chandra
ACIS-I X-ray data, inferring a very hard spectrum with an X-ray efficiency log
Lx/Lbol = -6.4, a factor of 4 larger than the canonical value for O-type stars
and comparable to that of the young magnetic O-type star {\theta}1 Ori C and
other Of?p stars. Finally, we examine the probable magnetospheric properties of
the star, reporting in particular very strong magnetic confinement of the
stellar wind, with {\eta}* {\simeq} 1.5 {\times} 10^4, and a very large Alfven

Seismic risk assessment for developing countries : Pakistan as a case study
Modern Earthquake Risk Assessment (ERA) methods usually require seismo-tectonic information for Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment (PSHA) that may not be readily available in developing countries. To bypass this drawback, this paper presents a practical event-based PSHA method that uses instrumental seismicity, available historical seismicity, as well as limited information on geology and tectonic setting. Historical seismicity is integrated with instrumental seismicity to determine the long-term hazard. The tectonic setting is included by assigning seismic source zones associated with known major faults. Monte Carlo simulations are used to generate earthquake catalogues with randomized key hazard parameters. A case study region in Pakistan is selected to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. The results indicate that the proposed method produces seismic hazard maps consistent with previous studies, thus being suitable for generating such maps in regions where limited data are available. The PSHA procedure is developed as an integral part of an ERA framework named EQRAM. The framework is also used to determine seismic risk in terms of annual losses for the study region
Optimization of Pathogenicity Tests for Selection of Native Isolates of Entomopathogenic Fungi Isolated from Citrusgrowing Areas of MĂ©xico on Adults ofDiaphorina citriKuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae)
Huanglonbing (HLB), es considerado una de las mĂĄs letales enfermedades de los cĂtricos alrededor del mundo, y ha alcanzado las principales ĂĄreas de producciĂłn de limĂłn Mexicano (Citrus latifolia Tanaka) en la costa del pacifico de MĂ©xico. Los productores han iniciado el uso de insecticidas para controlar las poblaciones del psĂlido asiĂĄtico de los cĂtricos, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), el vector del patĂłgeno âCandidatus Liberibacter asiaticusâ asociado con el HLB. Actualmente los costos de los insecticidas y los efectos secundarios de su uso son las principales preocupaciones, ya que podrĂan perjudicar la estrategia de manejo contra el vector; y por lo tanto, alternativas ecolĂłgicas y econĂłmicamente viables a los insecticidas convencionales serian necesarias a corto plazo. Por tanto, el objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la patogenicidad de 27 aislados nativos y 3 cepas de hongos entomopatĂłgenos para determinar su potencial como agentes de control biolĂłgico sobre Diaphorina citri usando 2 diferentes mĂ©todos de bioensayo. Los bioensayos fueron realizados bajo condiciones de laboratorio (26 ± 2 °C, 60 ± 5% H.R y 16:8 h L:O) mediante la exposiciĂłn de insectos adultos a una concentraciĂłn de 1 Ă 108 conidios por mililitro utilizando 2 diferentes mĂ©todos de aplicaciĂłn, es decir, por asperjado de esporas en las plĂĄntulas de cĂtricos y por asperjado directo a los psĂlidos adultos. Los resultados mostraron que para el asperjado directo a los adultos los aislados HIB-24 (B. bassiana) y HIB-32 (I. fumosorosea) mostraron el mayor porcentaje de mortalidad (60.66%). Respecto al asperjado de plĂĄntulas el aislado HIB-19 (I. fumosorosea) mostrĂł el mayor porcentaje de mortalidad (62.02%). Los resultados de este estudio demuestran el potencial para el uso de hongos entomopatĂłgenos en el manejo de D. citri en MĂ©xico.
ABSTRACT
Huanglongbing (HLB), considered one of the most lethal diseases of citrus worldwide, has reached the main areas of Mexican lime (Citrus latifolia Tanaka) fruit production on the Pacific coast of MĂ©xico. Growers have initiated intensive use of insecticides in order to control populations of the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), the vector of the pathogen, âCandidatus Liberibacter asiaticusâ associated with huanglongbing. Presently, costs of insecticides and the side effects of their use are major concerns, because they could impair the management strategy against the vector; and thus, ecologically and economically viable alternatives to conventional insecticides are required in the short term. Therefore the goal of this study was to evaluate the pathogenicity of 27 native isolates and 3 strains of entomopathogenic fungi and determine their potential as biological control agents of D. citri by using 2 different bioassay methods. Bioassays were performed under laboratory conditions (26 ± 2 °C, 60 ± 5% RH and 16:8 h L:D) by exposing adult insects to a concentration of 1 Ă 108 conidia per milliliter using 2 different application methods, i.e., spraying the spores onto the citrus seedlings and spraying the spores directly onto the adult psyllids. The results showed that by direct spraying the adults, HIB-24 (B. bassiana) and HIB-32 (I. fumosorosea) isolates showed the highest mortality (60.66%). Regarding spraying of the seedlings, HIB-19 (I. fumosorosea) showed the highest percentage of mortality (62.02%). The results from this study demonstrate potential for using entomopathogenic fungi in the management of D. citri in MĂ©xico

COVID-19, systemic crisis, and possible implications for the wild meat trade in sub-Saharan Africa
Wild animals play an integral and complex role in the economies and ecologies of many
countries across the globe, including those of West and Central Africa, the focus of this
policy perspective. The trade in wild meat, and its role in diets, have been brought into
focus as a consequence of discussions over the origins of COVID-19. As a result, there
have been calls for the closure of Chinaâs âwet marketsâ; greater scrutiny of the wildlife
trade in general; and a spotlight has been placed on the potential risks posed by growing human populations and shrinking natural habitats for animal to human transmission of
zoonotic diseases. However, to date there has been little attention given to what the consequences of the COVID-19 economic shock may be for the wildlife trade; the people who
rely on it for their livelihoods; and the wildlife that is exploited. In this policy perspective,
we argue that the links between the COVID-19 pandemic, rural livelihoods and wildlife
are likely to be more complex, more nuanced, and more far-reaching, than is represented in
the literature to date. We develop a causal model that tracks the likely implications for the
wild meat trade of the systemic crisis triggered by COVID-19. We focus on the resulting
economic shockwave, as manifested in the collapse in global demand for commodities such
as oil, and international tourism services, and what this may mean for local African economies and livelihoods. We trace the shockwave through to the consequences for the use
of, and demand for, wild meats as households respond to these changes. We suggest that
understanding and predicting the complex dynamics of wild meat use requires increased
collaboration between environmental and resource economics and the ecological and conservation sciences
Nearfield Summary and Statistical Analysis of the Second AIAA Sonic Boom Prediction Workshop
A summary is provided for the Second AIAA Sonic Boom Workshop held 8-9 January 2017 in conjunction with AIAA SciTech 2017. The workshop used three required models of increasing complexity: an axisymmetric body, a wing body, and a complete configuration with flow-through nacelle. An optional complete configuration with propulsion boundary conditions is also provided. These models are designed with similar nearfield signatures to isolate geometry and shock/expansion interaction effects. Eleven international participant groups submitted nearfield signatures with forces, pitching moment, and iterative convergence norms. Statistics and grid convergence of these nearfield signatures are presented. These submissions are propagated to the ground, and noise levels are computed. This allows the grid convergence and the statistical distribution of a noise level to be computed. While progress is documented since the first workshop, improvement to the analysis methods for a possible subsequent workshop are provided. The complete configuration with flow-through nacelle showed the most dramatic improvement between the two workshops. The current workshop cases are more relevant to vehicles with lower loudness and have the potential for lower annoyance than the first workshop cases. The models for this workshop with quieter ground noise levels than the first workshop exposed weaknesses in analysis, particularly in convective discretization
How universityâs activities support the development of studentsâ entrepreneurial abilities: case of Slovenia and Croatia
The paper reports how the offered university activities support the development of studentsâ entrepreneurship abilities. Data were collected from 306 students from Slovenian and 609 students from Croatian universities. The study reduces the gap between theoretical researches about the academic entrepreneurship education and individual empirical studies about the studentâs estimation of the offered academic activities for development of their entrepreneurial abilities. The empirical research revealed differences in Slovenian and Croatian studentsâ perception about (a) needed academic activities and (b) significance of the offered university activities, for the development of their entrepreneurial abilities. Additionally, the results reveal that the impact of studentsâ gender and study level on their perception about the importance of the offered academic activities is not significant for most of the considered activities. The main practical implication is focused on further improvement of universitiesâ entrepreneurship education programs through selection and utilization of activities which can fill in the recognized gaps between the studentsâ needed and the offered academic activities for the development of studentsâ entrepreneurial abilities
Importance of patient bed pathways and length of stay differences in predicting COVID-19 hospital bed occupancy in England.
Background: Predicting bed occupancy for hospitalised patients with COVID-19 requires understanding of length of stay (LoS) in particular bed types. LoS can vary depending on the patientâs âbed pathwayâ - the sequence of transfers of individual patients between bed types during a hospital stay. In this study, we characterise these pathways, and their impact on predicted hospital bed occupancy. Methods: We obtained data from University College Hospital (UCH) and the ISARIC4C COVID-19 Clinical Information Network (CO-CIN) on hospitalised patients with COVID-19 who required care in general ward or critical care (CC) beds to determine possible bed pathways and LoS. We developed a discrete-time model to examine the implications of using either bed pathways or only average LoS by bed type to forecast bed occupancy. We compared model-predicted bed occupancy to publicly available bed occupancy data on COVID-19 in England between March and August 2020. Results: In both the UCH and CO-CIN datasets, 82% of hospitalised patients with COVID-19 only received care in general ward beds. We identified four other bed pathways, present in both datasets: âWard, CC, Wardâ, âWard, CCâ, âCCâ and âCC, Wardâ. Mean LoS varied by bed type, pathway, and dataset, between 1.78 and 13.53 days. For UCH, we found that using bed pathways improved the accuracy of bed occupancy predictions, while only using an average LoS for each bed type underestimated true bed occupancy. However, using the CO-CIN LoS dataset we were not able to replicate past data on bed occupancy in England, suggesting regional LoS heterogeneities. Conclusions: We identified five bed pathways, with substantial variation in LoS by bed type, pathway, and geography. This might be caused by local differences in patient characteristics, clinical care strategies, or resource availability, and suggests that national LoS averages may not be appropriate for local forecasts of bed occupancy for COVID-19. Trial registration: The ISARIC WHO CCP-UK study ISRCTN66726260 was retrospectively registered on 21/04/2020 and designated an Urgent Public Health Research Study by NIHR.</p
