Summary Conclusions on Computational Experience and the Explanatory Value of Condition Measures for Linear Optimization*

The modern theory of condition measures for convex optimization problems was initially developed for convex problems in conic format, and several aspects of the theory have now been extended to handle non-conic formats as well. In this theory, the (Renegar-) condition measure C(d) for a problem instance with data d=(A,b,c) has been shown to be connected to bounds on a wide variety of behavioral and computational characteristics of the problem instance, from sizes of optimal solutions to the complexity of algorithms. Herein we test the practical relevance of the condition measure theory, as applied to linear optimization problems that one might typically encounter in practice. Using the NETLIB suite of linear optimization problems as a test bed, we found that 71% of the NETLIB suite problem instances have infinite condition measure. In order to examine condition measures of the problems that are the actual input to a modern IPM solver, we also computed condition measures for the NETLIB suite problems after pre-preprocessing by CPLEX 7.1. Here we found that 19% of the post-processed problem instances in the NETLIB suite have infinite condition measure, and that log C(d) of the post-processed problems is fairly nicely distributed. Furthermore, there is a positive linear relationship between IPM iterations and log C(d) of the post-processed problem instances (significant at the 95% confidence level), and 42% of the variation in IPM iterations among the NETLIB suite problem instances is accounted for by log C(d) of the post-processed problem instances.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA

Estimating adaptive setpoint temperatures using weather stations

Reducing both the energy consumption and CO 2 emissions of buildings is nowadays one of the main objectives of society. The use of heating and cooling equipment is among the main causes of energy consumption. Therefore, reducing their consumption guarantees such a goal. In this context, the use of adaptive setpoint temperatures allows such energy consumption to be significantly decreased. However, having reliable data from an external temperature probe is not always possible due to various factors. This research studies the estimation of such temperatures without using external temperature probes. For this purpose, a methodology which consists of collecting data from 10 weather stations of Galicia is carried out, and prediction models (multivariable linear regression (MLR) and multilayer perceptron (MLP)) are applied based on two approaches: (1) using both the setpoint temperature and the mean daily external temperature from the previous day; and (2) using the mean daily external temperature from the previous 7 days. Both prediction models provide adequate performances for approach 1, obtaining accurate results between 1 month (MLR) and 5 months (MLP). However, for approach 2, only the MLP obtained accurate results from the 6th month. This research ensures the continuity of using adaptive setpoint temperatures even in case of possible measurement errors or failures of the external temperature probes.Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities 00064742/ITC-20133094Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness BIA 2017-85657-

Aspectos éticos da informática médica: princípios de uso e usuário apropriado de sistemas computacionais na atenção clínica

Medical Informatics (MI) studies the intersection among computer technology, medicine and the influence of electronic clinical history and the intelligent systems for diagnosis support in clinical decision making. The inadequate use of technology may divert the purposes of MI towards an inadequate use by third parties involved in clinical health care, such as health care managers or insurance agents. The principles for “use and appropriate user for MI applications” as base are proposed to manage suitably computational technology in health care. The development of these principles must be based in the evaluation of their applications, emphasizing that the evaluation must be carried out with the same considerations as other types of medical or surgical interventions. Behavioral Measures and their Correlation with IPM Iteration Counts on Semi-Definite Programming Problems

We study four measures of problem instance behavior that might account for the observed differences in interior-point method (IPM) iterations when these methods are used to solve semidefinite programming (SDP) problem instances: (i) an aggregate geometry measure related to the primal and dual feasible regions (aspect ratios) and norms of the optimal solutions, (ii) the (Renegar-) condition measure C(d) of the data instance, (iii) a measure of the near-absence of strict complementarity of the optimal solution, and (iv) the level of degeneracy of the optimal solution. We compute these measures for the SDPLIB suite problem instances and measure the correlation between these measures and IPM iteration counts (solved using the software SDPT3) when the measures have finite values. Our conclusions are roughly as follows: the aggregate geometry measure is highly correlated with IPM iterations (CORR = 0.896), and is a very good predictor of IPM iterations, particularly for problem instances with solutions of small norm and aspect ratio. The condition measure C(d) is also correlated with IPM iterations, but less so than the aggregate geometry measure (CORR = 0.630). The near-absence of strict complementarity is weakly correlated with IPM iterations (CORR = 0.423). The level of degeneracy of the optimal solution is essentially uncorrelated with IPM iterations

Artificial neural network model for automatic code generation in graphical interface applications

    Get PDF
Introduction: Currently, the software development industry is living in its golden age due to the progress in areas related to machine learning, which is part of AI techniques. These advances have allowed tasks considered exclusively human to be solved using a computer. However, the complexity and the extensive area covered by new projects that must be developed using programming languages have slowed down project delivery times and affected the company's productivity. Objective: This research presents the methodology carried out for constructing a recurrent neural network model for the automatic generation of source code related to graphical user interfaces using Python programming language. Method: By constructing a natural language-related dataset for describing graphical interfaces programmed in Python, a deep neural network model is built to generate automatic source code. Results:  The trained model achieves loss and perplexity values of 1.57 and 4.82, respectively, in the validation stage, avoiding overfitting in the model's training. Conclusions: A neural network model is trained to process the natural language related to the request to create graphical interfaces using the Python programming language to automatically generate source code that can be executed through the Python interpreter.Introduction: Currently, the software development industry is living in its golden age due to the progress in areas related to machine learning, which is part of AI techniques. This article presents an approach to the ways in which the bodies of those persons whose sexual and gender identities are not subject to the predominant heteronormative model are constructed within the local context of the city of Guayaquil. By means of concepts such as the performative, precariousness, and abjection proposed by Judith Butler, an attempt is made to explain the ways in which the bodies of those who subvert the dominant sex and gender systems have been excluded from the public space of a city that, at the beginning of the 21st century, began a process of ‘urban regeneration.’ In addition, the article demonstrates the way class and race differences have repercussions in the displacement of these identities by middle class men who identify themselves as gay

Plasma screening effects in molecular hydrogen: modified energies and lifetimes of doubly excited states

We perform a systematic study on the behaviour of energy positions and autoionization widths of metastable resonance states in the Hydrogen molecule subject to screened Coulomb interactions among all particles using an ab initio Feshbach configuration interaction method. We only focus on the Q1 series of doubly excited states lying between the first H2 +(1sσg) and the second H2 +(2pσu) ionization thresholds, for several spectroscopic molecular symmetries 1,3Σg u, 1,3Πg, u and 1,3Δg, u. Special attention is given to the efficient and accurate method for the evaluation of screened Coulomb two-electron integrals in molecules when using configurations in terms of molecular orbitals described using a B-spline basi
