Charmless Two-Body and Quasi-Two-Body B-decays at BABAR
We present improved measurements of the branching fractions and CP
asymmetries in the two-body decays B0 --> pi0 pi0, B0 --> K0 pi0 and B0 --> K+
pi- as well as the quasi two-body B0 --> K_1(1270)+ pi- and B0 --> K_1(1400)+
pi- decays. These updated measurements are made using the complete set of BABAR
data taken at the Y(4S) resonance, collected between 1999 and 2007 at the

Search for the Rare Decay B to pi l+l- in the BaBar Experiment
The rare decay B {yields} {pi}{ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -} is the simplest manifestation of a b {yields} d{ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -} flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) process. This type of process only proceeds through penguin loop or box diagrams and is sensitive to physics at the electroweak scale. It can be used to constrain parameters of the Standard Model and its extensions. B {yields} {pi}{ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -} events have not yet been observed; the branching fraction is expected to be an order of magnitude smaller than the measured branching fraction for the similar B {yields} K{ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -} decay. Using 230 million B{bar B} meson pairs collected with the BABAR detector, we have done a search for the rare decay B {yields} {pi}{ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -}. The data was produced in e+e? collision at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance in the PEP-II collider between 1999 and 2004. Four exclusive B-meson decay modes have been reconstructed: B{sup +} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -} and B{sup 0} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -}, where {ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -} is either an electron pair (e{sup +}e{sup -}) or a muon pair ({mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}). We find no evidence for a signal, and we obtain upper limits on the branching fractions {Beta}. Assuming the isospin relation {Beta}(B{sup +} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -}) 2 x {sup {tau}}B{sup +}/{sup {tau}}B{sup 0} {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -}), we obtain an upper limit at 90% confidence level on the lepton-flavor-averaged branching fraction of B {yields} {pi}{ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -} to be {Beta}(B {yields} {pi}e{mu}) < 9.2 x 10{sup -8} at 90% C.L. We have also reconstructed two control modes B{sup +} {yields} {pi}{sup +}e{sup {+-}}{mu}{sup {-+}} and B{sup 0} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}e{sup {+-}}{mu}{sup {-+}} and we also obtain an upper limit at 90% confidence level on the lepton-flavor-violating decay B {yields} {pi}e{mu} of {Beta}(B {yields} {pi}e{mu}) < 9.2 x 10{sup -8} at 90% C.L. This is the first search for these rare decays at the current B-Factory experiments. This limit is an improvement by four orders of magnitude with respect to the previous experimental limit, and about a factor three above Standard Model predictions

The Viscosity of a Liquid Plutonium-Iron Eutectic Alloy
The viscosity of a liquid plutonium-iron eutectic alloy, which contains 9.5 atom per cent iron and melts at 411 degrees C, was determined up to 808 degrees C at Mound Laboratory by an oscillating cup viscosimeter. This type of apparatus employed a right-circular cylindrical cup containing the liquid under investigation attached to a torsion fiber. The dampening effect of the liquid upon the normal oscillations of the pendululm was a function of the viscosity of the liquid. The amplitudes of the oscillations of the pendulum were measured by a photographic technique. The periods of the oscillations were determined by an automatic timing mechanism. The reliability of the viscosimeter was demonstrated by following the expected function of the viscosity of liquid lead and bismuth over a larger temperature range than was previously reported

Celebrating success at Fernald
Restoration of the Fernald Environmental Management Project is now moving from the environmental investigation stage to real, tangible remediation progress. Using a variety of programmatic innovations, DOE and FERMCO continue to strengthen an effective partnership that supports a mutually-developed mission of safe, least-cost, earliest final remediation of the Fernald Site while complying with all applicable DOE Orders, regulatory requirements and commitments and addressing the concerns of the many stakeholders who have an interest in how remediation at Fernald progresses. The progress that is occurring at Fernald is testimony to a productive DOE/FERMCO partnership that will continue to be an essential part of the difficult environmental restoration task at this site
A search for the decay modes B+/- to h+/- tau l
We present a search for the lepton flavor violating decay modes B+/- to h+/-
tau l (h= K,pi; l= e,mu) using the BaBar data sample, which corresponds to 472
million BBbar pairs. The search uses events where one B meson is fully
reconstructed in one of several hadronic final states. Using the momenta of the
reconstructed B, h, and l candidates, we are able to fully determine the tau
four-momentum. The resulting tau candidate mass is our main discriminant
against combinatorial background. We see no evidence for B+/- to h+/- tau l
decays and set a 90% confidence level upper limit on each branching fraction at
the level of a few times 10^-5.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Observation and study of baryonic B decays: B -> D(*) p pbar, D(*) p pbar pi, and D(*) p pbar pi pi
We present a study of ten B-meson decays to a D(*), a proton-antiproton pair,
and a system of up to two pions using BaBar's data set of 455x10^6 BBbar pairs.
Four of the modes (B0bar -> D0 p anti-p, B0bar -> D*0 p anti-p, B0bar -> D+ p
anti-p pi-, B0bar -> D*+ p anti-p pi-) are studied with improved statistics
compared to previous measurements; six of the modes (B- -> D0 p anti-p pi-, B-
-> D*0 p anti-p pi-, B0bar -> D0 p anti-p pi- pi+, B0bar -> D*0 p anti-p pi-
pi+, B- -> D+ p anti-p pi- pi-, B- -> D*+ p anti-p pi- pi-) are first
observations. The branching fractions for 3- and 5-body decays are suppressed
compared to 4-body decays. Kinematic distributions for 3-body decays show
non-overlapping threshold enhancements in m(p anti-p) and m(D(*)0 p) in the
Dalitz plots. For 4-body decays, m(p pi-) mass projections show a narrow peak
with mass and full width of (1497.4 +- 3.0 +- 0.9) MeV/c2, and (47 +- 12 +- 4)
MeV/c2, respectively, where the first (second) errors are statistical
(systematic). For 5-body decays, mass projections are similar to phase space
expectations. All results are preliminary.Comment: 28 pages, 90 postscript figures, submitted to LP0
Cross Sections for the Reactions e+e- --> K+ K- pi+pi-, K+ K- pi0pi0, and K+ K- K+ K- Measured Using Initial-State Radiation Events
We study the processes e+e- --> K+ K- pi+pi-gamma, K+ K- pi0pi0gamma, and K+
K- K+ K-gamma, where the photon is radiated from the initial state. About
84000, 8000, and 4200 fully reconstructed events, respectively, are selected
from 454 fb-1 of BaBar data. The invariant mass of the hadronic final state
defines the \epem center-of-mass energy, so that the K+ K- pi+pi- data can be
compared with direct measurements of the e+e- --> K+ K- pi+pi- reaction. No
direct measurements exist for the e+e- --> K+ K-pi0pi0 or e+e- --> K+ K-K+ K-
reactions, and we present an update of our previous result with doubled
statistics. Studying the structure of these events, we find contributions from
a number of intermediate states, and extract their cross sections. In
particular, we perform a more detailed study of the e+e- --> phi(1020)pipigamma
reaction, and confirm the presence of the Y(2175) resonance in the phi(1020)
f0(980) and K+K-f0(980) modes. In the charmonium region, we observe the J/psi
in all three final states and in several intermediate states, as well as the
psi(2S) in some modes, and measure the corresponding product of branching
fraction and electron width.Comment: 35 pages, 42 figure
Study of Upsilon(3S,2S) -> eta Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(3S,2S) -> pi+pi- Upsilon(1S) hadronic trasitions
We study the Upsilon(3S,2S)->eta Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(3S,2S)->pi+pi-
Upsilon(1S) transitions with 122 million Upsilon(3S) and 100 million
Upsilon(2S) mesons collected by the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric
energy e+e- collider. We measure B[Upsilon(2S)->eta
Upsilon(1S)]=(2.39+/-0.31(stat.)+/-0.14(syst.))10^-4 and Gamma[Upsilon(2S)->eta
Upsilon(1S)]/Gamma[Upsilon(2S)-> pi+pi-
Upsilon(1S)]=(1.35+/-0.17(stat.)+/-0.08(syst.))10^-3. We find no evidence for
Upsilon(3S)->eta Upsilon(1S) and obtain B[Upsilon(3S)->eta Upsilon(1S)]<1.0
10^-4 and Gamma[Upsilon(3S)->eta Upsilon(1S)]/Gamma[Upsilon(3S)->pi+pi-
Upsilon(1S)]<2.3 10^-3 as upper limits at the 90% confidence level. We also
provide improved measurements of the Upsilon(2S) - Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(3S)
- Upsilon(1S) mass differences, 562.170+/-0.007(stat.)+/-0.088(syst.) MeV/c^2
and 893.813+/-0.015(stat.)+/-0.107(syst.) MeV/c^2 respectively.Comment: 8 pages, 16 encapsulated postscript figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.
Evidence for the η_b(1S) Meson in Radiative ΄(2S) Decay
We have performed a search for the η_b(1S) meson in the radiative decay of the ΄(2S) resonance using a sample of 91.6 Ă 10^6 ΄(2S) events recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B factory at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. We observe a peak in the photon energy spectrum at E_Îł = 609.3^(+4.6)_(-4.5)(stat)±1.9(syst) MeV, corresponding to an η_b(1S) mass of 9394.2^(+4.8)_(-4.9)(stat) ± 2.0(syst) MeV/c^2. The branching fraction for the decay ΄(2S) â γη_b(1S) is determined to be [3.9 ± 1.1(stat)^(+1.1)_(-0.9)(syst)] Ă 10^(-4). We find the ratio of branching fractions B[΄(2S) â γη_b(1S)]/B[΄(3S) â γη_b(1S)]= 0.82 ± 0.24(stat)^(+0.20)_(-0.19)(syst)
