    Quantization of massive scalar fields over static black string backgrounds

    The renormalized mean value of the corresponding components of the Energy-Momentum tensor for massive scalar fields coupled to an arbitrary gravitational field configuration having cylindrical symmetry are analytically evaluated using the Schwinger-DeWitt approximation, up to second order in the inverse mass value. The general results are employed to explicitly derive compact analytical expressions for the Energy-Momentum tensor in the particular background of the Black-String spacetime. In the case of the Black String considered in this work, we proof that a violation of the weak energy condition occur at the horizon of the space-time for values of the coupling constant, that include as particular cases the most interesting of minimal and conformal coupling.Comment: 4 page

    INDIGO : better geomagnetic observatories where we need them

    The INDIGO project aims to improve the global coverage of digital observatories by deploying digital magnetometer systems in: i) Observatories where existing analog recording equipment is in need of upgrading. ii) Newly established digital observatories. iii) Existing digital observatories for the purpose of quality control and redundancy. In implementing the project and selecting suitable sites, special attention is paid to parts of the Earth devoid of magnetic observatories, increasing the reliability and long-term operation of existing observatories and cost-effective use of local resources. The Poster reviews the current status of the project. We examine the different steps and initiatives taken since the initiation of INDIGO in 2004 and assess their effectiveness in achieving progress towards our aims of improving global coverage and enhanced data quality

    Structural analysis of MDM2 RING separates degradation from regulation of p53 transcription activity

    MDM2–MDMX complexes bind the p53 tumor-suppressor protein, inhibiting p53's transcriptional activity and targeting p53 for proteasomal degradation. Inhibitors that disrupt binding between p53 and MDM2 efficiently activate a p53 response, but their use in the treatment of cancers that retain wild-type p53 may be limited by on-target toxicities due to p53 activation in normal tissue. Guided by a novel crystal structure of the MDM2–MDMX–E2(UbcH5B)–ubiquitin complex, we designed MDM2 mutants that prevent E2–ubiquitin binding without altering the RING-domain structure. These mutants lack MDM2's E3 activity but retain the ability to limit p53′s transcriptional activity and allow cell proliferation. Cells expressing these mutants respond more quickly to cellular stress than cells expressing wild-type MDM2, but basal p53 control is maintained. Targeting the MDM2 E3-ligase activity could therefore widen the therapeutic window of p53 activation in tumors

    Se encuestó a miembros del equipo de salud, estudiantes universitarios y pacientes, para observar el grado de conocimiento que poseían respecto a la Farmacovigilancia, por medio de encuestas anónimas. Los farmacéuticos, los médicos y los estudiantes de la carrera de Farmacia, aunque no en su totalidad, tuvieron un mejor nivel de conocimiento del Sistema Nacional de Farmacovigilancia (SNFV); sin embargo otros profesionales de la Salud presentaron serias dudas al respecto. Los pacientes mostraron un alto nivel de desinformación, aún cuando son quienes utilizan los medicamentos y deberían participar permanentemente en el SNFV. Estos resultados plantean la necesidad de reforzar acciones para promocionar la Farmacovigilancia, de modo de posibilitar la participación activa de toda la sociedad en su conjunto, sobre la base de la información y el compromiso responsable de velar por la seguridad del uso de todos los productos farmacéuticos.Health workers, university students and patients were submitted to an anonymous survey to know the degree of knowledge that they had with regard to pharmacovigilance. Pharmacists, physicians and pharmacy students, though not in their entirety, had a better level of knowledge of the pharmacovigilance national system of Argentina. However, other professionals belonging to the health system presented serious gaps in their knowledge. The patients showed a poor level of information, even when the are the users of medicines, and should be active sharers in the pharmacovigilance national system. These results show the need to reinforce methods to promote pharmacovigilance, to make it possible for the active participation of the whole society, on the basis of the information and responsible commitment to ensure the safety of the use of all the pharmaceutical products.Colegio de Farmacéuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aire

    Minimal residual disease in Myeloma: Application for clinical care and new drug registration

    The development of novel agents has transformed the treatment paradigm for multiple myeloma, with minimal residual disease (MRD) negativity now achievable across the entire disease spectrum. Bone marrow–based technologies to assess MRD, including approaches using next-generation flow and next-generation sequencing, have provided real-time clinical tools for the sensitive detection and monitoring of MRD in patients with multiple myeloma. Complementary liquid biopsy–based assays are now quickly progressing with some, such as mass spectrometry methods, being very close to clinical use, while others utilizing nucleic acid–based technologies are still developing and will prove important to further our understanding of the biology of MRD. On the regulatory front, multiple retrospective individual patient and clinical trial level meta-analyses have already shown and will continue to assess the potential of MRD as a surrogate for patient outcome. Given all this progress, it is not surprising that a number of clinicians are now considering using MRD to inform real-world clinical care of patients across the spectrum from smoldering myeloma to relapsed refractory multiple myeloma, with each disease setting presenting key challenges and questions that will need to be addressed through clinical trials. The pace of advances in targeted and immune therapies in multiple myeloma is unprecedented, and novel MRD-driven biomarker strategies are essential to accelerate innovative clinical trials leading to regulatory approval of novel treatments and continued improvement in patient outcomes

    Allocating Family Responsibilities for Dependent Older People in Mexico and Peru

    This paper applies different analytical frameworks to explore processes of family bargaining about providing care for dependent older people in Mexico and Peru. These frameworks include cultural norms, life course effects and material exchange. The paper is based on 19 in-depth qualitative family case studies, which are linked to a wider set of quantitative survey data. Care arrangements and bargaining processes are revealed to be highly gendered, and largely conform to prevailing cultural norms. Rather than neutral and objective, the self-identified role as main carer is found to be subjective and potentially ambiguous. The few men who self-identify as main carers are more likely to play an indirect, organisational role than engage directly in daily care. As such, bargaining mainly relates to which woman performs the main care role, and large family networks mean that there is usually more than one candidate carer. Bargaining can occur inter-generationally and conjugally, but bargaining between siblings is of particular importance. Bargaining is framed by the uncertain trajectory of older people’s care needs, and arrangements are sometimes reconfigured in response to changing care needs or family circumstances. Taking the narratives at face value, the influence of life course effects on bargaining and care arrangements is more obvious than material exchange. There are, however, indications that economic considerations, particularly inheritance, still play an important behind the scenes role
