Board Diving Regulations in Public Swimming Pools and Risk of Injury

The extent to which certain dive forms are considered risky (forward/backward/rotations) and therefore not permitted is a matter for local pool managers. In study one, 20 public pools with diving facilities responded to a UK survey concerning their diving regulation policy and related injury incidence in the previous year. More restrictive regulation of dive forms was not associated with a decrease in injuries [rs(42)=-.20, p=0.93]. In study two, diving risk perception and attitudes towards regulation were compared between experienced club divers (N=22) and non-divers (N=22). Risk perception was lower for those with experience, and these people favoured less regulation. The findings are interpreted in terms of a risk thermostat model, where for complex physical performance activities such as diving, individuals may exercise caution in proportion to their ability and previous experience of success and failure related to the activity. Though intuitively appealing, restrictive regulation of public pool diving may be ineffective in practice because risk is not simplistically associated with dive forms, and divers are able to respond flexibly to risk by exercising caution where appropriate. Vascular Function and Structure in Veteran Athletes after Myocardial Infarction.
PURPOSE: Although athletes demonstrate lower cardiovascular risk and superior vascular function compared with sedentary peers, they are not exempted from cardiac events (i.e., myocardial infarction [MI]). The presence of an MI is associated with increased cardiovascular risk and impaired vascular function. We tested the hypothesis that lifelong exercise training in post-MI athletes, similar as in healthy controls, is associated with a superior peripheral vascular function and structure compared with a sedentary lifestyle in post-MI individuals. METHODS: We included 18 veteran athletes (ATH) (>20 yr) and 18 sedentary controls (SED). To understand the effect of lifelong exercise training after MI, we included 20 veteran post-MI athletes (ATH + MI) and 19 sedentary post-MI controls (SED + MI). Participants underwent comprehensive assessment using vascular ultrasound (vascular stiffness, intima-media thickness, and endothelium (in)dependent mediated dilatation). Lifetime risk score was calculated for a 30-yr risk prediction of cardiovascular disease mortality of the participants. RESULTS: ATH demonstrated a lower vascular stiffness and smaller femoral intima-media thickness compared with SED. Vascular function and structure did not differ between ATH + MI and SED + MI. ATH (4.0% ± 5.1%) and ATH + MI (6.1% ± 3.7%) had a significantly better lifetime risk score compared with their sedentary peers (SED: 6.9% ± 3.7% and SED + MI: 9.3% ± 4.8%). ATH + MI had no secondary events versus two recurrent MI and six elective percutaneous coronary interventions within SED + MI (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Although veteran post-MI athletes did not have a superior peripheral vascular function and structure compared with their sedentary post-MI peers, benefits of lifelong exercise training in veteran post-MI athletes relate to a better cardiovascular risk profile and lower occurrence of secondary events
Effects of 8-week swimming training on carotid arterial stiffness and hemodynamics in young overweight adults

INTRODUÇÃO: A natação tem sido recomendada como tipo de atividade física para a prevenção, tratamento e controle da hipertensão arterial. OBJETIVO: Analisar os efeitos da prática regular de natação sobre a pressão arterial de adultos pré-hipertensos. MÉTODOS: A amostra foi composta por 36 homens pré-hipertensos divididos em dois grupos: Experimental - GE (n=24, 40,60±9,36 anos) e Controle - GC (n=12, 40,57±8,05 anos). O GE realizou um programa regular de natação, com três sessões semanais de 45 min, durante 12 semanas, enquanto o GC não alterou seus hábitos alimentares e permaneceu sem praticar atividade física no período. O procedimento estatístico utilizado para verificar as diferenças entre as médias antes e depois de 12 semanas do programa regular de natação foi o teste-t de Student. O estudo admitiu o nível de p < 0.05 para a significância estatística. RESULTADOS: O grupo GE apresentou diferenças estatisticamente significativas nas variáveis analisadas quando comparadas com o GC, tanto na pressão arterial sistólica, PAS (Δ = - 5,89 mmHg, p = 0,00), como na pressão arterial diastólica, PAD (Δ = - 5,15mmHg, p = 0,00). CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados mostram que um programa regular de natação provoca reduções significativas na pressão arterial em repouso em homens pré-hipertensos

Swimming exercise, arterial stiffness, and elevated blood pressure
textAge is the major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and this is attributable in part to stiffening of large elastic arteries and development of vascular endothelial dysfunction. In contrast, regular aerobic exercise is associated with reduced risk of CVD. Swimming is an attractive form of aerobic exercise and always recommended for health promotion as well as prevention and treatment of risk factors for CVD. However, there is little scientific evidence to date indicating that swimming is equally efficacious to land-based exercise modes in reducing cardiovascular risks. Accordingly, the aim of the research was to determine the role of regular swimming exercise on both CVD traditional risk factors and vascular functions. To comprehensively address this aim, 2 different approaches were used: Study 1 (cross-sectional study) was designed to determine the potential benefit of regular swimming exercise in the primary prevention of age-related decreases in vascular function. Key measurements of vascular function were performed in middle-aged and older swimmers, runners, and sedentary controls. Central arterial compliance was higher in swimmers and runners than in sedentary controls. Study 2 (intervention study) was designed to determine whether regular swimming exercise could reverse the age-associated decline in vascular function. Middle-aged and older subjects completed either a 12-week swim training program or relaxation/ stretching exercise (attention control) program. Short-term swim training improved arterial blood pressure and vascular functions. In summary, regular swimming exercise can attenuate reductions in and partially restore the loss of vascular function including central arterial compliance and endothelial function in middle-aged and older adults. Swimming exercise exhibited typical central arterial compliance and endothelial function phenotypes that are often displayed in land-based exercise.Kinesiology and Health Educatio

Problem: Online yacht booking market is now very competitive market. There are many yacht online companies in the market. Therefore, it is critical for yacht online companies to understand customers’ needs and to know what the selection criteria are that customers use to book yacht online. As rental yacht sales agents are mostly virtual companies, which mainly use Internet to reach target customers and conduct most of the purchase process. Therefore, one question that need to be researched is how important is the website for the rental yacht sales agent when it comes to getting new customers and keeping the old ones? Purpose: The purpose of the study is to find out what the selection criteria which customers use to evaluate when booking yacht online are. Method: This study is primarily based on qualitative research by using in-depth interview method. Customer decision making process is applied in order to suit with the topic. The data collection came from two sources, primary and secondary data. Conclusion: The important selection criteria for new customers are websites containing necessary information which mentioned by the interviewees during the interview, word of mouth of the company and services from the company and its sale staff. These three selection criteria have huge effect on new customers in order to book yacht online. For the experienced customers, there are two selection criteria which are considered as the most important criteria which are services from the company and its sale staff and website containing necessary information
The Adaptation of Participation Scale Short Simplified Questionnaire into Indonesian Language and the Psychometric Properties in Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus with Vestibular Dysfunction
Background. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been reported to affect the vestibular system resulting in dizziness and vertigo complaints. This complication is known to disable the social participation. The Participation Scale Short Simplified (PSSS) has been developed to quantify the severity of social participation restrictions. The aim of this study was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the PSSS into Indonesian Bahasa (PSSS-Ina). The measurement properties of the translated version and the factors contributing to the severe participation restriction were determined. Methods. The participants comprised 55 T2DM with vestibular dysfunction (VD) in the community center for diabetes mellitus in Central Java, Indonesia. The signs of VD were confirmed by head impulse test, Dix Hallpike Test, and supine roll test. The PSSS-Ina was administered twice with a four-week interval. The physical examination was also performed to identify the contributing factors. Results. The test–retest reliability of the PSSS Indonesian Bahasa version (PSSS-Ina) between two measurement sessions was excellent (ICC of 0.93, p<0.001, and 95% CI: 0.88–0.95). The correlation coefficient between two administrations was high (r=0.88). Based on the demonstrated content validity, the values of the corrected item and total correlation were greater than 0.3. No floor and ceiling effects were observed. The good internal consistency was confirmed with Cronbach’s alpha of 0.84. The factor analysis produced three factors of activity participation, social engagement, and work-related participation. The multiple logistic regression revealed that the balance performance of mCTSIB was the main factor contributing to the severe participation restriction reflected by the PSSS-Ina score. Conclusion. The Indonesian version of the PSSS-Ina demonstrated excellent comprehensibility and reliability in individuals suffering T2DM with VD. This tool is therefore helpful in identifying the participation limitation in individuals with VD
