BCS-BEC Crossover in Atomic Fermi Gases with a Narrow Resonance
We determine the effects on the BCS-BEC crossover of the energy dependence of
the effective two-body interaction, which at low energies is determined by the
effective range. To describe interactions with an effective range of either
sign, we consider a single-channel model with a two-body interaction having an
attractive square well and a repulsive square barrier. We investigate the
two-body scattering properties of the model, and then solve the Eagles-Leggett
equations for the zero temperature crossover, determining the momentum
dependent gap and the chemical potential self-consistently. From this we
investigate the dependence of the crossover on the effective range of the

Simultaneous imaging of the near- and far-field intensity distributions of the Ni-like Sn X-ray laser
We report two-dimensional near-field imaging experiments of the 11.9-nm Sn X-ray laser that were performed with a set of novel Mo/Y multilayer mirrors having reflectivities of up to âź40% at normal and at 45° incidence. Second-moment analysis of the X-ray laser emission was used to determine values of the X-ray beam propagation factor M2 for a range of irradiation parameters. The results reveal a reduction of M2 with increasing prepulse intensity. The spatial size of the output is a factor of âź2 smaller than previously measured for the 14.7-nm Pd X-ray laser, while the distance of the X-ray emission with respect to the target surface remains roughly the sam
Determinants of guideline use in primary care physical therapy: a cross-sectional survey of attitudes, knowledge, and behavior
Background
Understanding of attitudes, knowledge, and behavior related to evidence-based practice (EBP) and use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines in primary care physical therapy is limited.
Objectives
The objectives of this study were: (1) to investigate self-reported attitudes, knowledge, behavior, prerequisites, and barriers related to EBP and guideline use among physical therapists in primary care and (2) to explore associations of self-reported use of guidelines with these social cognitive factors along with demographic and workplace characteristics.
Design
This was a cross-sectional survey.
Methods
A web-based survey of 419 physical therapists in primary care in western Sweden was performed. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to examine factors associated with guideline use.
Results
The response rate was 64.7%. Most respondents had positive attitudes toward EBP and guidelines: 90% considered EBP necessary, and 96% considered guidelines important. Approximately two thirds reported confidence in finding and using evidence. One third reported being aware of guidelines. Thirteen percent knew where to find guidelines, and only 9% reported having easy access to guidelines. Fewer than half reported using guidelines frequently. The most important barriers to using guidelines were lack of time, poor availability, and limited access to guidelines. Young age and brief work experience were associated with positive attitudes toward EBP. A postgraduate degree was associated with higher application of EBP. Positive attitudes, awareness of guidelines, considering guidelines to facilitate practice, and knowing how to integrate patient preferences with guideline use were associated with frequent use of guidelines.
Limitations
Data were self-reported, which may have increased the risk of social desirability bias.
Conclusions
Use of guidelines was not as frequent as could be expected in view of the positive attitudes toward EBP and guidelines among physical therapists. Awareness of and perceived access to guidelines were limited. The identified determinants can be addressed when developing guideline implementation strategies
Some Remarks on Group Bundles and C*-dynamical systems
We introduce the notion of fibred action of a group bundle on a C(X)-algebra.
By using such a notion, a characterization in terms of induced C*-bundles is
given for C*-dynamical systems such that the relative commutant of the
fixed-point algebra is minimal (i.e., it is generated by the centre of the
given C*-algebra and the centre of the fixed-point algebra). A class of
examples in the setting of the Cuntz algebra is given, and connections with

Calving rates at tidewater glaciers vary strongly with ocean temperature

Measurements are difficult because mass lost is replaced by ice flow at variable rates, and frontal ablation incorporates sub-aerial calving, and submarine melt and calving. Here we derive frontal ablation rates for three dynamically contrasting glaciers in Svalbard from an unusually dense series of satellite images. We combine ocean data, ice-front position and terminus velocity to investigate controls on frontal ablation. We find that frontal ablation is not dependent on ice dynamics, nor reduced by glacier surface freeze-up, but varies strongly with sub-surface water temperature. We conclude that calving proceeds by melt undercutting and ice-front collapse, a process that may dominate frontal ablation where submarine melt can outpace ice flow. Our findings illustrate the potential for deriving simple models of tidewater glacier response to oceanographic forcing.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

Relativistic precession and spin dynamics of an elliptic Rydberg wave packet
Time evolution of wave packets built from the eigenstates of the Dirac
equation for a hydrogenic system is considered. We investigate the space and
spin motion of wave packets which, in the non-relativistic limit, are
stationary states with a probability density distributed uniformly along the
classical, elliptical orbit (elliptic WP). We show that the precession of such
a WP, due to relativistic corrections to the energy eigenvalues, is strongly
correlated with the spin motion. We show also that the motion is universal for

Associations of overweight, obesity and osteoporosis with ankle fractures
Background: Studies exploring risk factors for ankle fractures in adults are scarce, and with diverging conclusions. This study aims to investigate whether overweight, obesity and osteoporosis may be identified as risk factors for ankle fractures and ankle fracture subgroups according to the Danis-Weber (D-W) classification.
Methods: 108 patients âĽ40âyears with fracture of the lateral malleolus were included. Controls were 199 persons without a previous fracture history. Bone mineral density of the hips and spine was measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, and history of previous fracture, comorbidities, medication, physical activity, smoking habits, body mass index and nutritional factors were registered.
Results: Higher body mass index with increments of 5 gave an adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 1.30 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03â1.64) for ankle fracture, and an adjusted OR of 1.96 (CI 0.99â4.41) for sustaining a D-W type B or C fracture compared to type A. Compared to patients with normal bone mineral density, the odds of ankle fracture in patients with osteoporosis was 1.53, but the 95% CI was wide (0.79â2.98). Patients with osteoporosis had reduced odds of sustaining a D-W fracture type B or C compared to type A (OR 0.18, CI 0.03â0.83).
Conclusions: Overweight increased the odds of ankle fractures and the odds of sustaining an ankle fracture with possible syndesmosis disruption and instability (D-W fracture type B or C) compared to the stable and more distal fibula fracture (D-W type A). Osteoporosis did not significantly increase the odds of ankle fractures, thus suffering an ankle fracture does not automatically warrant further osteoporosis assessment.publishedVersio
