Effects of a protracted induction of parturition on the incidence of retained placenta and assessment of uterine artery blood flow as a measure of placental maturation in cattle
The objectives of the present study were to compare the effects of a protracted and a conventional induction of parturition on the incidence of retained placenta, and to evaluate the suitability of transrectal Doppler sonography of the uterine arteries as a noninvasive method for the assessment of placental maturation. Protracted induction of labor (PIP) was precipitated in 13 cows by the administration of 1.3 mg dexamethasone im twice daily between Days 268 and 273 of gestation, and 40 mg dexamethasone im on Day 274 of gestation. For conventional induction of labor (SIP), 10 cows received 40 mg dexamethasone on Day 274 of gestation. A third group was not treated and served as control (SPON; N = 11). Blood flow volume (BFV) and resistance index in the uterine arteries were measured with Doppler sonography once a day from Day 268 of gestation until labor. After each ultrasonographic examination, blood samples for determination of steroid hormones were taken. Incidence of retained placenta was lower (P 0.05) and did not differ between groups SPON, PIP, and SIP (P > 0.05). Resistance index was higher (P 0.05) between them. Total estrogen concentrations increased by 283% (P 0.05) until Day -2 in group SIP, but increased (P < 0.05) after the high dosage of dexamethasone within 1 day by 140%. Total estrogen levels were higher (P < 0.05) in cows with released placenta than in cows with retained placenta. In conclusion, a protracted compared with a short induction of labor results in higher estrogen levels before term, but does not affect incidence of placental retention. Neither alterations in placental maturation nor changes in steroid hormones influenced uterine blood supply. Therefore, Doppler sonography of uterine arteries is unsuitable to investigate the process of placental maturation induced by glucocorticoids in cows. Nevertheless, disturbances in the placental maturation process in cows with retained fetal membranes after parturition can be detected before parturition by a higher uterine blood flow resistance in the uterine arteries
Superconductivity in an Einstein Solid AxV2Al20 (A = Al and Ga)
A cage compound AxV2Al20 (Al10V), that was called an Einstein solid by Caplin
and coworkers 40 years ago, is revisited to investigate the low-energy, local
vibrations of the A atoms and their influence on the electronic and
superconducting properties of the compound. Polycrystalline samples with A =
Al, Ga, Y, and La are studied through resistivity and heat capacity
measurements. Weak-coupling BCS superconductivity is observed below Tc = 1.49,
1.66, and 0.69 K for Ax = Al0.3, Ga0.2, and Y, respectively, but not above 0.4
K for Ax = La. Low-energy modes are detected only for A = Al and Ga, which are
approximately described by the Einstein model with Einstein temperatures of 24
and 8 K, respectively. A weak but significant coupling between the low-energy
modes, which are almost identical to those called rattling in recent study, and
conduction electrons manifests itself as anomalous enhancement in resistivity
at around low temperatures corresponding to the Einstein temperatures.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, to be published in J. Phys. Soc. Jp
Church-Rosser Systems, Codes with Bounded Synchronization Delay and Local Rees Extensions
What is the common link, if there is any, between Church-Rosser systems,
prefix codes with bounded synchronization delay, and local Rees extensions? The
first obvious answer is that each of these notions relates to topics of
interest for WORDS: Church-Rosser systems are certain rewriting systems over
words, codes are given by sets of words which form a basis of a free submonoid
in the free monoid of all words (over a given alphabet) and local Rees
extensions provide structural insight into regular languages over words. So, it
seems to be a legitimate title for an extended abstract presented at the
conference WORDS 2017. However, this work is more ambitious, it outlines some
less obvious but much more interesting link between these topics. This link is
based on a structure theory of finite monoids with varieties of groups and the
concept of local divisors playing a prominent role. Parts of this work appeared
in a similar form in conference proceedings where proofs and further material
can be found.Comment: Extended abstract of an invited talk given at WORDS 201
A Comparison of Hybrid and End-to-End Models for Syllable Recognition
This paper presents a comparison of a traditional hybrid speech recognition
system (kaldi using WFST and TDNN with lattice-free MMI) and a lexicon-free
end-to-end (TensorFlow implementation of multi-layer LSTM with CTC training)
models for German syllable recognition on the Verbmobil corpus. The results
show that explicitly modeling prior knowledge is still valuable in building
recognition systems. With a strong language model (LM) based on syllables, the
structured approach significantly outperforms the end-to-end model. The best
word error rate (WER) regarding syllables was achieved using kaldi with a
4-gram LM, modeling all syllables observed in the training set. It achieved
10.0% WER w.r.t. the syllables, compared to the end-to-end approach where the
best WER was 27.53%. The work presented here has implications for building
future recognition systems that operate independent of a large vocabulary, as
typically used in a tasks such as recognition of syllabic or agglutinative
languages, out-of-vocabulary techniques, keyword search indexing and medical
speech processing.Comment: 22th International Conference of Text, Speech and Dialogue TSD201
Risk of acquired drug resistance during short-course directly observed treatment of tuberculosis in an area with high levels of drug resistance.
BACKGROUND: Data on the performance of standardized short-course directly observed treatment (DOTS) of tuberculosis (TB) in areas with high levels of drug resistance and on the potential impact of DOTS on amplification of resistance are limited. Therefore, we analyzed treatment results from a cross-sectional sample of patients with TB enrolled in a DOTS program in an area with high levels of drug resistance in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan in Central Asia. METHODS: Sputum samples for testing for susceptibility to 5 first-line drugs and for molecular typing were obtained from patients starting treatment in 8 districts. Patients with sputum smear results positive for TB at the end of the intensive phase of treatment and/or at 2 months into the continuation phase were tested again. RESULTS. Among 382 patients with diagnoses of TB, 62 did not respond well to treatment and were found to be infected with an identical Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain when tested again; 19 of these patients had strains that developed new or additional drug resistance. Amplification occurred in only 1.2% of patients with initially susceptible or monoresistant TB strains, but it occurred in 17% of those with polyresistant strains (but not multidrug-resistant strains, defined as strains with resistance to at least isoniazid and rifampicin) and in 7% of those with multidrug-resistant strains at diagnosis. Overall, 3.5% of the patients not initially infected with multidrug-resistant TB strains developed such strains during treatment. Amplification of resistance, however, was found only in polyresistant Beijing genotype strains. CONCLUSIONS: High levels of amplification of drug resistance demonstrated under well-established DOTS program conditions reinforce the need for implementation of DOTS-Plus for multidrug-resistant TB in areas with high levels of drug resistance. The strong association of Beijing genotype and amplification in situations of preexisting resistance is striking and may underlie the strong association between this genotype and drug resistance
Treatment of tuberculosis in a region with high drug resistance: Outcomes, drug resistance amplification and re-infection
Introduction: Emerging antituberculosis drug resistance is a serious threat for tuberculosis (TB) control, especially in Eastern
European countries.
Methods: We combined drug susceptibility results and molecular strain typing data with treatment outcome reports to
assess the influence of drug resistance on TB treatment outcomes in a prospective cohort of patients from Abkhazia
(Georgia). Patients received individualized treatment regimens based on drug susceptibility testing (DST) results. Definitions
for antituberculosis drug resistance and treatment outcomes were in line with current WHO recommendations. First and
second line DST, and molecular typing were performed in a supranational laboratory for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)
strains from consecutive sputum smear-positive TB patients at baseline and during treatment.
Results: At baseline, MTB strains were fully drug-susceptible in 189/326 (58.0%) of patients. Resistance to at least H or R
(PDR-TB) and multidrug-resistance (MDR-TB) were found in 69/326 (21.2%) and 68/326 (20.9%) of strains, respectively. Three
MDR-TB strains were also extensively resistant (XDR-TB). During treatment, 3/189 (1.6%) fully susceptible patients at baseline
were re-infected with a MDR-TB strain and 2/58 (3.4%) PDR-TB patients became MDR-TB due to resistance amplification. 5/
47 (10.6%) MDR- patients became XDR-TB during treatment. Treatment success was observed in 161/189 (85.2%), 54/69
(78.3%) and 22/68 (32.3%) of patients with fully drug susceptible, PDR- and MDR-TB, respectively. Development of ofloxacin
resistance was significantly associated with a negative treatment outcome.
Conclusion: In Abkhazia, a region with high prevalence of drug resistant TB, the use of individualized MDR-TB treatment
regimens resulted in poor treatment outcomes and XDR-TB amplification. Nosocomial transmission of MDR-TB emphasizes
the importance of infection control in hospitals
Kondo Effects and Multipolar Order in the cubic PrTr2Al20 (Tr=Ti, V)
Our single crystal study reveals that PrTr2Al20 (Tr = Ti and V) provides the
first examples of a cubic {\Gamma}3 nonmagnetic ground doublet system that
shows the Kondo effect including a -ln T dependent resistivity. The {\Gamma}3
quadrupolar moments in PrV2Al20 induce anomalous metallic behavior through
hybridization with conduction electrons, such as T^{1/2} dependent resistivity
and susceptibility below ~ 20 K down to its ordering temperature T_O = 0.6 K.
In PrTi2Al20, however, quadrupoles are well-localized and exhibit an order at
T_O = 2.0 K. Stronger Kondo coupling in PrV2Al20 than in PrTi2Al20 suppresses
quadrupolar ordering, and instead promotes hybridization between the {\Gamma}3
doublet and conduction electrons, leading to most likely the quadrupolar Kondo
effect.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
Pitch determination considering laryngealization effects in spoken dialogs
A frequent phenomenon in spoken dialogs of the information seeking type are short elliptic utterances whose mood (declarative or interrogative) can only be distinguished by intonation. The main acoustic evidence is conveyed by the fundamental frequency or Fo-contour. Many algorithms for Fo determination have been reported in the literature. A common problem are irregularities of speech known as "laryngealizations". This article describes an approach based on neural network techniques for the improved determination of fundamental frequency. First, an improved version of our neural network algorithm for reconstruction of the voice source signal (glottis signal) is presented. Second, the reconstructed voice source signal is used as input to another neural network distinguishing the three classes "voiceless", "voiced non-laryngealized", and "voiced laryngealized". Third, the results are used to improve an existing Fo algorithm. Results of this approach are presented and discussed in the context of the application in a spoken dialog system
