Science- and Engineering-Related Ethics and Values Studies: Characteristics of an Emerging Field of Research

Re‐conceptualization of scientific literacy in South Korea for the 21st century
As the context of human life expands from personal to global, a new vision of scientific literacy is needed. Based on a synthesis of the literature and the findings of an online survey of South Korean and US secondary science teachers, we developed a framework for scientific literacy for South Korea that includes five dimensions: content knowledge, habits of mind, character and values, science as a human endeavor, and metacognition, and self‐direction. The framework was validated by international science educators. Although the names of these dimensions sound familiar, the framework puts a new perspective on scientific literacy by expanding and refining each dimension, stressing integrated understanding of big idea and the importance of character and values, adding metacognition, and emphasizing global citizenship. Twenty‐first century citizens need integrated understanding of the big ideas of science and habits of mind such as systematic thinking and communications. They also need to realize that science is a human endeavor that changes, as new evidence is uncovered. However, these aspects of scientific literacy provide only a partial picture. Scientific literacy should also emphasize character and values that can lead learners to make appropriate choices and decisions to ensure a sustainable planet and provide all people with basic human rights. Individuals will also need to develop metacognitive skills in order interpret new complex scientific information and know when they need additional information. Although this framework was developed primarily for South Korea, a new vision of scientific literacy that is applicable for K‐12 has the potential to spur the development of new standards, curriculum materials, instructional practices, professional development and assessments, and dialog across nations. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc., Inc. Research utilisation and knowledge mobilisation in the commissioning and joint planning of public health interventions to reduce alcohol-related harms: a qualitative case design using a cocreation approach
Background: Considerable resources are spent on research to establish what works to improve the nation’s health. If the findings from this research are used, better health outcomes can follow, but we know that these findings are not always used. In public health, evidence of what works may not ‘fit’ everywhere, making it difficult to know what to do locally. Research suggests that evidence use is a social and dynamic process, not a simple application of research findings. It is unclear whether it is easier to get evidence used via a legal contracting process or within unified organisational arrangements with shared responsibilities. Objective: To work in cocreation with research participants to investigate how research is utilised and knowledge mobilised in the commissioning and planning of public health services to reduce alcohol-related harms. Design, setting and participants: Two in-depth, largely qualitative, cross-comparison case studies were undertaken to compare real-time research utilisation in commissioning across a purchaser–provider split (England) and in joint planning under unified organisational arrangements (Scotland) to reduce alcohol-related harms. Using an overarching realist approach and working in cocreation, case study partners (stakeholders in the process) picked the topic and helped to interpret the findings. In Scotland, the topic picked was licensing; in England, it was reducing maternal alcohol consumption. Methods: Sixty-nine interviews, two focus groups, 14 observations of decision-making meetings, two local feedback workshops (n = 23 and n = 15) and one national workshop (n = 10) were undertaken. A questionnaire (n = 73) using a Behaviourally Anchored Rating Scale was issued to test the transferability of the 10 main findings. Given the small numbers, care must be taken in interpreting the findings. Findings: Not all practitioners have the time, skills or interest to work in cocreation, but when there was collaboration, much was learned. Evidence included professional and tacit knowledge, and anecdotes, as well as findings from rigorous research designs. It was difficult to identify evidence in use and decisions were sometimes progressed in informal ways and in places we did not get to see. There are few formal evidence entry points. Evidence (prevalence and trends in public health issues) enters the process and is embedded in strategic documents to set priorities, but local data were collected in both sites to provide actionable messages (sometimes replicating the evidence base). Conclusions: Two mid-range theories explain the findings. If evidence has saliency (relates to ‘here and now’ as opposed to ‘there and then’) and immediacy (short, presented verbally or visually and with emotional appeal) it is more likely to be used in both settings. A second mid-range theory explains how differing tensions pull and compete as feasible and acceptable local solutions are pursued across stakeholders. Answering what works depends on answering for whom and where simultaneously to find workable (if temporary) ‘blends’. Gaining this agreement across stakeholders appeared more difficult across the purchaser–provider split, because opportunities to interact were curtailed; however, more research is needed. Transmission blocking activity of a standardized neem (Azadirachta indica) seed extract on the rodent malaria parasite Plasmodium berghei in its vector Anopheles stephensi
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The wide use of gametocytocidal artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) lead to a reduction of <it>Plasmodium falciparum </it>transmission in several African endemic settings. An increased impact on malaria burden may be achieved through the development of improved transmission-blocking formulations, including molecules complementing the gametocytocidal effects of artemisinin derivatives and/or acting on <it>Plasmodium </it>stages developing in the vector. Azadirachtin, a limonoid (tetranortriterpenoid) abundant in neem (<it>Azadirachta indica</it>, Meliaceae) seeds, is a promising candidate, inhibiting <it>Plasmodium </it>exflagellation <it>in vitro </it>at low concentrations. This work aimed at assessing the transmission-blocking potential of NeemAzal<sup>®</sup>, an azadirachtin-enriched extract of neem seeds, using the rodent malaria <it>in vivo </it>model <it>Plasmodium berghei</it>/<it>Anopheles stephensi</it>.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p><it>Anopheles stephensi </it>females were offered a blood-meal on <it>P. berghei </it>infected, gametocytaemic BALB/c mice, treated intraperitoneally with NeemAzal, one hour before feeding. The transmission-blocking activity of the product was evaluated by assessing oocyst prevalence, oocyst density and capacity to infect healthy mice. To characterize the anti-plasmodial effects of NeemAzal<sup>® </sup>on early midgut stages, i.e. zygotes and ookinetes, Giemsa-stained mosquito midgut smears were examined.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>NeemAzal<sup>® </sup>completely blocked <it>P. berghei </it>development in the vector, at an azadirachtin dose of 50 mg/kg mouse body weight. The totally 138 examined, treated mosquitoes (three experimental replications) did not reveal any oocyst and none of the healthy mice exposed to their bites developed parasitaemia. The examination of midgut content smears revealed a reduced number of zygotes and post-zygotic forms and the absence of mature ookinetes in treated mosquitoes. Post-zygotic forms showed several morphological alterations, compatible with the hypothesis of an azadirachtin interference with the functionality of the microtubule organizing centres and with the assembly of cytoskeletal microtubules, which are both fundamental processes in <it>Plasmodium </it>gametogenesis and ookinete formation.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This work demonstrated <it>in vivo </it>transmission blocking activity of an azadirachtin-enriched neem seed extract at an azadirachtin dose compatible with 'druggability' requisites. These results and evidence of anti-plasmodial activity of neem products accumulated over the last years encourage to convey neem compounds into the drug discovery & development pipeline and to evaluate their potential for the design of novel or improved transmission-blocking remedies.</p
