What is meant by 'religious understanding'?

be meant by the term ‘religious
understanding’. Although not often talked
about, this term appears in a number
of significant RE documents. Nowhere,
however, do any of these documents
explain clearly what it means and what it
has to do with RE. The result is that there
are many different ways of understanding
the term, each with implications for RE.
Essentially, the question has to do with
whether the ‘understanding’ is ‘religious’
because it has something to do with
understanding religion or whether it is
‘religious’ because it is, essentially, a
particular kind of understanding.
This article will take a brief look at some
of the key ways in which the term has been
understood and will begin to explore what
‘religious understanding’ might mean for
religious education
Developing Trainee Teacher Practice with Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
There is general agreement that Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have a place within the geography classroom; they offer the potential to support geographical learning, exploring real-world problems through student-centred learning, and developing spatial thinking. Despite this, teachers often avoid engaging with GIS and research suggests that the lack of GIS training in initial teacher education is partially to blame. In response to this, this article explores how 16 trainee geography teachers were supported to develop their use of GIS across a one-year, postgraduate teacher training course in England. The project, an interpretive case study underpinned by a constructivist epistemology, used questionnaires and interviews to elicit trainees’ understandings of the nature of GIS, and to explore their engagement with it across their training year. Results suggest a programme of embedded training developed in trainees a more nuanced understanding of the value of GIS for supporting geographical learning and, thereby, increased self-efficacy towards and engagement with it in their teaching practice. However, not all trainees embraced GIS as a pedagogical tool and the study raised several key issues for geography teacher education, including the knowledge culture within schools in the teacher training partnership, and the importance of trainee self-efficacy towards GIS

You put your life on the line: Young people\u27s experiences of disclosing sexual abuse and/or sexual assault
This research comes as a response to young people\u27s concern about the availability of appropriate services for young people seeking assistance in reclaiming their lives after experiencing sexual abuse and/or sexual assault. In order to understand what young people felt were appropriate services, it was first necessary to understand what happened when they disclosed to someone that they had been sexually abused or sexually assaulted. Qualitative feminist interview research techniques were used to ask seven young women What happened when you disclosed to someone you had been sexually abused/assaulted? The information given by the young women revealed that: the pre-disclosure stage had an important influence on the effects of a disclosure; emotional turmoil often followed a disclosure: betrayal and re-victimisation by family, friends and systems was a common occurrence; professional workers often displayed a lack of understanding and sensitivity; the young women showed strong determination and courage and; disclosure is a process of discovery and reclaiming your life. To expose the reader to the intimacy of the disclosure process, the dialogues from the young women are used extensively throughout. The study also includes reflections on being involved in such a study from b0th participant and researcher viewpoints
