Objectives of security in civil aviation are reached in multiplying separated measuring chains. The use of dissimilar measuring chains is now encouraged. For this purpose, THALES Avionics has developed an aircraft speed laser anemometer. The suitability of integrated optics on glass for the miniaturisation of the system has been proven in 2006. This thesis aims at pushing ahead with the miniaturisation in hybridising the pump laser diode which supplies the seed laser on a glass platform. The structure consists on locking the fundamental of a Broad Area Laser Diode (BALD) thanks a planar external cavity, composed of a modal converter made by ion exchange on glass and a Bragg grating. First, easy to use conception rules for the BALD's optical feedback are elaborated. Then, the technique of selective field assisted ion exchange is shown to be adapted to the realisation of a modal converter between the BALD and a single mode collecting optical fibre. The realised converter demonstrated the modal locking thanks to the use a fibre Bragg grating. The BALD has been stabilized around the Bragg wavelength with a spectral width of 0.3 nm and stable single mode output power has reached 100 mW. The Bragg grating has then been integrated on the optical chip and the integrated locking of the BALD has been achieved. The output power has been limited by the high reflectivity of the grating. As perspectives, the increase of the output power has been studied and a highly integrated system of intra cavity pumping is proposed.

Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) is a recent trend that has been successfully used in order to collect and share geographic information. This method is of interest for scientists who are in need of data and who want to get people involved in their cause. In this paper we discuss the challenges and opportunities that scientists may face when using the concept. An initial challenge is to find users who are willing to contribute. Second scientist must get these users to interact with the application and with each other. The final goal is to end up with high quality data that can be used for scientific research

AUTOMATED RECONSTRUCTION OF 3D BUILDINGS IN HISTORIC CITY CENTERS FROM LIDAR DATA AND 2D BUILDING FOOTPRINTS

This paper describes a process for the automated generation of 3D buildings using 2D building footprints derived from cadastral maps and LIDAR point cloud data. In our approach we extract relevant geometric information from 2D building footprints in order to classify point cloud data. One key concept is the fact that roofs in most cases are aligned to the angles of the walls of a building. This concept is utilized to create contiguous surfaces and to extract ridges. In a field study involving two historic city centers in Switzerland we evaluate the results of our approach

Implementation of tiled vector services: a case study

Abstract. Vector tiling aims at cutting vector data into smaller entities. It offers several opportunities, especially for the development of web-mapping systems, such as the possibilities to apply different styles, to access attributes or to render 3D data. Today no open and widely adopted standard exists for the implementation of web services involving vector tiles. In this paper we investigate several important parameters that need to be considered for the implementation of vector tile services. We then present a case-study where several tiled vector services are implemented. The results of this case study are useful for further implementations of tiled vector services and discussions regarding standardization

    Nanobacteria Are Mineralo Fetuin Complexes

“Nanobacteria” are nanometer-scale spherical and ovoid particles which have spurred one of the biggest controversies in modern microbiology. Their biological nature has been severely challenged by both geologists and microbiologists, with opinions ranging from considering them crystal structures to new life forms. Although the nature of these autonomously replicating particles is still under debate, their role in several calcification-related diseases has been reported. In order to gain better insights on this calciferous agent, we performed a large-scale project, including the analysis of “nanobacteria” susceptibility to physical and chemical compounds as well as the comprehensive nucleotide, biochemical, proteomic, and antigenic analysis of these particles. Our results definitively ruled out the existence of “nanobacteria” as living organisms and pointed out the paradoxical role of fetuin (an anti-mineralization protein) in the formation of these self-propagating mineral complexes which we propose to call “nanons.” The presence of fetuin within renal calculi was also evidenced, suggesting its role as a hydroxyapatite nucleating factor

Lovastatin Protects against Experimental Plague in Mice

Background: Plague is an ectoparasite-borne deadly infection caused by Yersinia pestis, a bacterium classified among the group A bioterrorism agents. Thousands of deaths are reported every year in some African countries. Tetracyclines and cotrimoxazole are used in the secondary prophylaxis of plague in the case of potential exposure to Y. pestis, but cotrimoxazole-resistant isolates have been reported. There is a need for additional prophylactic measures. We aimed to study the effectiveness of lovastatin, a cholesterol-lowering drug known to alleviate the symptoms of sepsis, for plague prophylaxis in an experimental model. Methodology: Lovastatin dissolved in Endolipide was intraperitoneally administered to mice (20 mg/kg) every day for 6 days prior to a Y. pestis Orientalis biotype challenge. Non-challenged, lovastatin-treated and challenged, untreated mice were also used as control groups in the study. Body weight, physical behavior and death were recorded both prior to infection and for 10 days post-infection. Samples of the blood, lungs and spleen were collected from dead mice for direct microbiological examination, histopathology and culture. The potential antibiotic effect of lovastatin was tested on blood agar plates. Conclusions/Significance: Lovastatin had no in-vitro antibiotic effect against Y. pestis. The difference in the mortality between control mice (11/15; 73.5%) and lovastatin-treated mice (3/15; 20%) was significant (P,0.004; Mantel-Haensze

The Influence of Bioactive Oxylipins from Marine Diatoms on Invertebrate Reproduction and Development

Diatoms are one of the main primary producers in aquatic ecosystems and occupy a vital link in the transfer of photosynthetically-fixed carbon through aquatic food webs. Diatoms produce an array of biologically-active metabolites, many of which have been attributed as a form of chemical defence and may offer potential as candidate marine drugs. Of considerable interest are molecules belonging to the oxylipin family which are broadly disruptive to reproductive and developmental processes. The range of reproductive impacts includes; oocyte maturation; sperm motility; fertilization; embryogenesis and larval competence. Much of the observed bioactivity may be ascribed to disruption of intracellular calcium signalling, induction of cytoskeletal instability and promotion of apoptotic pathways. From an ecological perspective, the primary interest in diatom-oxylipins is in relation to the potential impact on energy flow in planktonic systems whereby the reproductive success of copepods (the main grazers of diatoms) is compromised. Much data exists providing evidence for and against diatom reproductive effects; however detailed knowledge of the physiological and molecular processes involved remains poor. This paper provides a review of the current state of knowledge of the mechanistic impacts of diatom-oxylipins on marine invertebrate reproduction and development

Diosgenin, a Steroidal Saponin, Inhibits Migration and Invasion of Human Prostate Cancer PC-3 Cells by Reducing Matrix Metalloproteinases Expression

BACKGROUND: Diosgenin, a steroidal saponin obtained from fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum), was found to exert anti-carcinogenic properties, such as inhibiting proliferation and inducing apoptosis in a variety of tumor cells. However, the effect of diosgenin on cancer metastasis remains unclear. The aim of the study is to examine the effect of diosgenin on migration and invasion in human prostate cancer PC-3 cells. METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Diosgenin inhibited proliferation of PC-3 cells in a dose-dependent manner. When treated with non-toxic doses of diosgenin, cell migration and invasion were markedly suppressed by in vitro wound healing assay and Boyden chamber invasion assay, respectively. Furthermore, diosgenin reduced the activities of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 by gelatin zymography assay. The mRNA level of MMP-2, -9, -7 and extracellular inducer of matrix metalloproteinase (EMMPRIN) were also suppressed while tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2) was increased by diosgenin. In addition, diosgenin abolished the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in PC-3 cells and tube formation of endothelial cells. Our immunoblotting assays indicated that diosgenin potently suppressed the phosphorylation of phosphatidylinositide-3 kinase (PI3K), Akt, extracellular signal regulating kinase (ERK) and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK). In addition, diosgenin significantly decreased the nuclear level of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), suggesting that diosgenin inhibited NF-κB activity. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: The results suggested that diosgenin inhibited migration and invasion of PC-3 cells by reducing MMPs expression. It also inhibited ERK, JNK and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways as well as NF-κB activity. These findings reveal new therapeutic potential for diosgenin in anti-metastatic therapy
