Conceptualising In-Flight Experience: An air Traveller Perspective
The aviation industry has evolved rapidly in recent years, and so have consumer expectations with regard to air travel. This study examines how air travellers conceptualise in-flight experience. Using a mixed-methods approach, this study is divided into two phases. First, semi-structured qualitative interviews were undertaken with 32 members of the flying public and analysed using thematic analysis. Second, based upon the key themes identified in the first phase, a questionnaire (with both quantitative and qualitative questions) was developed and administered to 151 participants. The first phase identified the different ways air travellers conceptualise in-flight experience, with the most important elements being food and drinks, flight attendants, entertainment, seat comfort, and leg room. In the second phase these important elements are shown to have statistically significant effects upon in-flight experience (using a t-test and chi-squared goodness of fit test), however, the size of their effects varied. A Friedman test (with post-hoc Wilcoxon signed-rank test) demonstrates that air travellers rank the contribution of each of these elements towards in-flight experience differently. The findings allow airline managers to prioritise different aspects of in-flight experience based upon their relative importance to air travellers
Smart Visual Beacons with Asynchronous Optical Communications using Event Cameras
Event cameras are bio-inspired dynamic vision sensors that respond to changes
in image intensity with a high temporal resolution, high dynamic range and low
latency. These sensor characteristics are ideally suited to enable visual
target tracking in concert with a broadcast visual communication channel for
smart visual beacons with applications in distributed robotics. Visual beacons
can be constructed by high-frequency modulation of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)
such as vehicle headlights, Internet of Things (IoT) LEDs, smart building
lights, etc., that are already present in many real-world scenarios. The high
temporal resolution characteristic of the event cameras allows them to capture
visual signals at far higher data rates compared to classical frame-based
cameras. In this paper, we propose a novel smart visual beacon architecture
with both LED modulation and event camera demodulation algorithms. We
quantitatively evaluate the relationship between LED transmission rate,
communication distance and the message transmission accuracy for the smart
visual beacon communication system that we prototyped. The proposed method
achieves up to 4 kbps in an indoor environment and lossless transmission over a
distance of 100 meters, at a transmission rate of 500 bps, in full sunlight,
demonstrating the potential of the technology in an outdoor environment.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, accepted by IEEE International Conference on

9-Oxo-4,5-diazafluoren-4-ium tetrachloridoaurate(III)–4,5-diazafluoren-9-one (1/1)
The AuIII atom in the title compound, (C11H7N2O)[AuCl4]·C11H6N2O, is in a nearly square-planar environment defined by four Cl atoms. The protonated 9-oxo-4,5-diazafluoren-4-ium cation forms an N—H⋯N hydrogen bond with the neutral 4,5-diazafluoren-9-one molecule
Using technology to improve access to specialist care in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: A systematic review
Our objective was to review the evidence for using technology to improve access to specialist care for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and their carers.
Medline, Google Scholar and the Cochrane library were searched for articles describing technology that enabled clinical care of patients with ALS or their carers where the patient/carer and clinician were not in the same location. Two applications were identified: telemedicine to facilitate video conferencing as an alternative to outpatient consultations and telehealth monitoring for patients with respiratory failure. One randomized controlled trial using telehealth in patients with respiratory failure including 22 patients with ALS was identified. While rates of hospitalization were reduced, overall mortality was unchanged and there were too few patients with ALS in the study to detect significant benefit. In conclusion, there is limited evidence to support the use of telemedicine or telehealth in the care of patients with ALS. Future research needs to develop an understanding of the key beneficial aspects of the traditional specialist ALS service and how these factors could be delivered using technology. Successful evaluation and implementation of technologies to facilitate access to specialist care will only be possible if all the relevant impacts of an intervention are understood and measured
Prevalence, predictive factors and clinical course of persistent pain associated with teeth displaying periapical healing following nonsurgical root canal treatment:a prospective study
AIMS:
To investigate the prevalence, pain catastrophizing and other predictive factors and clinical course of persistent pain/discomfort associated with teeth displaying periapical healing following nonsurgical root canal treatment (NSRCT).
// METHODOLOGY:
One hundred and ninety‐eight patients (264 teeth) who had NSRCT were reviewed at 5–14 months, postoperatively. Teeth with persistent post‐treatment pain or discomfort, plus evidence of periapical healing were further monitored 0.5, 4 and 10 years later. Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) and Short Form of the McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF‐MPQ) were completed. Predictive factors were investigated using logistic regression models.
// RESULTS:
Twenty‐four per cent (60/249) of teeth displaying periapical healing at first review were associated with persistent pain or discomfort. Fifty‐five teeth monitored 6–7 months later were associated with reduction in pain (17/30) or discomfort (7/25). Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) of eight teeth with persistent symptoms and complete periapical healing (by conventional radiographs) revealed distinct, small apical radiolucencies (n = 3) or root apex fenestration through the buccal plate (n = 2). History of chronic pain (headache, temporo‐mandibular joint, masticatory muscle, neck, shoulder or back pain; P = 0.005), preoperative pain (P = 0.04), responsive pulp (P = 0.009), tooth crack (P = 0.05) and small periapical radiolucency (P = 0.005) were significant predictive factors. The PCS revealed 16 patients (22 teeth) were catastrophizers (PCS ≥ 30), but this had no influence on post‐treatment symptoms (P = 0.5).
// CONCLUSIONS:
Persistent pain or discomfort associated with teeth showing periapical healing at the first review after NSRCT, decreased in intensity in most cases over the following 6 months. Longer‐term follow‐up revealed spontaneous improvement or symptom resolution in the majority of those with confirmed radiographic the absence of periapical disease. Five predictive factors (history of chronic pain, teeth with responsive pulps, association with pain, diagnosis of tooth crack before treatment and diameter of preoperative radiolucency) were identified
Calls to a home birth helpline: empowerment in childbirth
In the UK a woman has the right to decide to give birth at home, irrespective of whether she is expecting her first or a subsequent child and of any perceived ‘risk’ factors. However, the rate of home births in the UK is very low (around 2%), varies widely across the country and many women do not know how to arrange midwifery cover. The Home Birth helpline is a UK-based voluntary organisation offering support and information for women planning a home birth. In order to gain direct access to the issues that are of concern to women when planning a home birth, 80 calls to the helpline were recorded. The aims of this paper are to document the problems that callers to this helpline report having when trying to arrange home births and to explore the strategies the call-taker uses in helping women to exercise their right to birth at home. The paper concludes that women are not easily able to exercise their right to choose the place of birth and suggests a number of recommendations for action
Creation of quantum correlations between two atoms in a dissipative environment from an initial vacuum state
We have investigated the effect of counter-rotating terms on the dynamics of
entanglement and quantum discord between two identical atoms interacting with a
lossy single mode cavity field for a system initially in a vacuum state. The
counter-rotating terms are found to lead to steady states in the long time
limit which can have high quantum discord, but have no entanglement. The effect
of cavity decay rate on this steady state quantum discord has been also
investigated, surprisingly, the increase in cavity decay rate is found to both
enhance and maximize the steady quantum discord for separable states.Comment: Effects of counter-rotating interaction terms on quantum discor
Long-term health outcomes associated with an exercise referral scheme : an observational longitudinal follow-up study
Background: Exercise referral schemes (ERSs) support inactive adults, who have chronic health conditions, to become physically active. Uncertainty exists regarding the effectiveness of ERSs, with few studies evaluating their long-term impact. The aims of this study were to evaluate the long-term impact (12 mo) of participation in an ERS on self-reported physical activity (PA) and a range of health-related outcomes.
Methods: Data were analyzed for participants of a 24-week ERS who attended a week 52 follow-up between July 2015 and 2017. PA and health-related outcomes collected at weeks 1, 24, and 52 were analyzed using the Friedman test and Wilcoxon signed-ranks test.
Results: A total of 273 participants attended the week 52 follow-up. Self-reported PA significantly increased by a median of 636 MET minutes at week 52. There were also significant improvements in body mass index, systolic blood pressure, mental well-being, and health-related quality of life.
Conclusions: For every 8 participants referred to this 24-week ERS, 1 participant went on to show long-term improvements in at least 1 health indicator. The evidence base requires further long-term evaluations to confirm these findings across a range of ERS providers. Changes in self-reported PA would be supported by the inclusion of device-based measurment of PA
Health-related quality of life during chemoradiation in locally advanced rectal cancer : impacts and ethnic disparities
Aims: There is limited data on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in locally advanced rectal cancer. We assessed HRQoL before, during and after neoadjuvant chemoradiation, correlated this to corresponding clinician-reported adverse events (CR-AEs) and explored disparities between patients of Asian ethnicity versus Caucasians. Correlation between HRQoL and treatment response was also assessed. Methods: A consecutive sample of patients was recruited. HRQoL was assessed with the EORTC QLQ-C30 before chemoradiation, week three of chemoradiation and one-week pre-surgery. Clinical variables including CR-AEs were recorded at these time-points. Patients self-reported socio-demographic variables. Treatment response was assessed by the tumour regression grade. HRQoL data were analysed with multilevel models. Results: Fifty-one patients were recruited. HRQoL completion rates were ≥86%. Cognitive and role functioning worsened significantly during treatment. Emotional, role and social functioning improved significantly at pre-surgery. Fatigue and nausea/vomiting worsened during treatment while fatigue, appetite loss, diarrhoea and financial difficulties improved from treatment to pre-surgery. Almost 30% of the cohort were Asian ethnicity. Differences were found in multiple HRQoL domains between Asians and Caucasians, with Asians faring worse. Significant differences were evident in physical, role and cognitive functioning, and in seven out of the 8 symptom scales. The correlation between patient-reported outcomes and clinician-reported outcomes was weak, with diarrhoea having the strongest correlation (r = 0.58). Vomiting during treatment correlated with poor response, whilst baseline constipation correlated with good response. Conclusion: Chemoradiation for locally advanced rectal cancer affects multiple HRQoL domains. Our findings highlight the importance of psychological aspects of treatment. Significant differences were identified between the Asian and Caucasian populations, with Asians consistently performing worse. Poor correlations between patient and clinician reporting strongly support the inclusion of patient-reported outcomes in clinical studies. HRQoL domains of vomiting and constipation are potential biomarkers of treatment response
Surface Chemistry of Perfluoropolyethers and Hydrogenated Analogs: Are Studies of Model Compounds Useful?
We have studied adsorption, desorption, and decomposition of ethers on Ru(001), an atomically-smooth metal surface. We have compared diethers with monoethers, and fluorinated ethers with hydrogenated ethers. The number of ether linkages does not strongly influence adsorption bond strength, nor the extent of decomposition. Fluorination does weaken the adsorption bond strength and prevents decomposition. These studies suggest that the surface properties of monomeric ethers can be used to predict properties of oligomeric, and perhaps even polymeric, ethers
