Diversity and social opposition in the 21st century : the trajectory of the World Social Forum (2001-2005)

This paper analyses the experience of the World Social Forum in its five initial editions, from 2001 to 2005, all of them but one held in the Southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegré. Two main objectives are addressed: firstly the paper offers a profile of those in attendance at these events. Secondly, it discusses the permanent, albeit not clearly explicit, tension surrounding the event from the beginning, opposing those who would rather change it to a new political tool to promote traditional goals of left-inspired traditions and those, on the contrary, who would prefer to see the WSF as a new and innovative space for social diversity. The paper consists of three sections. The first presents a descriptive characterisation of the event under its five editions, specifically focusing on the profiles, activities and structures created over time. It also discusses the importance of the ‘Charter of Principles’ and how the ensuing so-called ‘methodology’ has entered the scene and dominated the event. The second section describes the existing diversity that is a trademark of the Forum, identifying the main networks that converge in this process, the relations between diversity and collective identity, and the different positions that oppose diversity and the political efficacy of the forums. The final section focuses on the positions and conflicts in relation to the ‘methodology’, and analytically explores the growing visibility of this dilemma and its potential divisive nature; from those who advocate a more unified political action in the short run vis-à-vis those who consider that the World Social Forum is not a political party, but rather a space of diversity. It concludes by suggesting that this remarkable experience is most probably on the verge of rupture, given the mounting tensions created by these polarising perspectives. "Nunca cruzaremos este rio" – a estranha associação entre o poder do atraso, a história lenta e a "sociologia militante", e o ocaso da reforma agrária no Brasil.

The article devotes itself to four main objectives. Firstly, it critically problematizes the dominant view Marxism holds on the “agrarian question”. The argument insists that this discussion, in fact, does not exist in the work of Marx. The second objective emphasises the presence of a “militant Sociology” which influences a significant part of Social Sciences that studies rural social processes. This interference is criticised by the author. In order to demonstrate the distortion, the author, as third objective of the article, discusses the most relevant aspects around land reform and its social actor, the MST. Finally, the last and fourth objective is to support the discussion of the three former objectives using José de Souza Martins’ extensive academic output. He is regarded as one of the leading social scientists in Brazil.O artigo é dedicado a quatro objetivos principais. Primeiramente, problematiza criticamente a visão dominante do marxismo sobre a “questão agrária”, insistindo na inexistência, de fato, de tal discussão na obra de Marx. Como segundo objetivo, o texto acentua a presença de uma “Sociologia militante” que influencia parcela expressiva das Ciências Sociais dedicadas aos processos sociais rurais e esta interferência é criticada pelo autor. Para demonstrar esta distorção, o autor, como terceiro objetivo, discute os aspectos mais relevantes em torno do tema da reforma agrária e do ator social mais visível a ela ligado, o MST. Finalmente, o último e quarto objetivo é fundamentar a discussão dos três primeiros objetivos se valendo da extensa obra de José de Souza Martins, apontado como um dos principais cientistas sociais no Brasil

The Brazilian Landless Movement (MST): critical times

This paper summarizes core aspects that marked the history of the Brazilian Landless Movement (MST), in recent years. It tries to demonstrate that nowadays the organization is experiencing mounting impasses, in part because of urbanization and its impacts on social perceptions about the trajectory of land reform in Brazil. Typical problematic aspects of the Movement are checklisted and briefly discussed, from organizational choices to the MST’s controversial repertoire of struggles implemented to enhance its political clout. Criaçāo e validaçāo de material educativo para puérperas: aleitamento materno e odontologia/ Creation and validation educational material for puerperium: breast feeding and dentistry

As crianças amamentadas por períodos mais longos têm menor morbidade e mortalidade, menos maloclusāo dentária e maior inteligência do que aquelas que são amamentadas por períodos mais curtos ou não amamentadas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever a produção e validação de um material educacional as puérperas, denominado de lâminas educativas, com ênfase em assuntos relacionados a prevenir o desmame precoce, a fim de proporcionar o apoio presencial de informações fundamentais para a promoção de saúde materno-infantil. Estudo do tipo multi-métodos, de caráter descritivo que agregou duas fases. A primeira fase constituiu se na produção das lâminas educativas e a segunda fase foi a validação por representantes do público-alvo (puérperas) e profissionais da saúde. Após a confecção das cinco lâminas educativas, foi aplicado um questionário semiestruturado guiado para 25 puérperas, que estiveram internadas no Hospital Universitário, com as seguintes informações: idade, primiparidade, escolaridade, conhecimento das mães sobre o aleitamento materno, uso da chupeta e avaliação do frênulo lingual. Na sequência, foram apresentadas as lâminas educacionais para as puérperas, e após aplicação de um segundo questionário, estruturado não guiado a fim de avaliar as lâminas e a importância do cirurgião-dentista durante o puerpério. Por fim, foi apresentado o material os profissionais das áreas da saúde pertencentes ao mesmo hospital e aplicado um questionário validado. O material educativo elaborado teve um elevado índice de aprovação pelas puérperas, 100%, como também pelos profissionais, 97.18%. Conclui se que as lâminas educacionais servem como material de apoio para o aleitamento materno, sendo aprovado não somente por pessoas leigas no assunto, mas também por profissionais atuantes na área, visando a melhorar a eficácia na abordagem de assuntos da saúde materno-infantil e o vínculo entre profissional e paciente
