Strain versus stress in a model granular material: a Devil's staircase
The series of equilibrium states reached by disordered packings of rigid,
frictionless discs in two dimensions, under gradually varying stress, are
studied by numerical simulations. Statistical properties of trajectories in
configuration space are found to be independent of specific assumptions ruling
granular dynamics, and determined by geometry only. A monotonic increase in
some macroscopic loading parameter causes a discrete sequence of
rearrangements. For a biaxial compression, we show that, due to the statistical
importance of such events of large magnitudes, the dependence of the resulting
strain on stress direction is a Levy flight in the thermodynamic limit.Comment: REVTeX, 4 pages, 5 included PostScript figures. New version altered

Effects of Sequence Disorder on DNA Looping and Cyclization
Effects of sequence disorder on looping and cyclization of the
double-stranded DNA are studied theoretically. Both random intrinsic curvature
and inhomogeneous bending rigidity are found to result in a remarkably wide
distribution of cyclization probabilities. For short DNA segments, the range of
the distribution reaches several orders of magnitude for even completely random
sequences. The ensemble averaged values of the cyclization probability are also

Zero-energy states in rotating trapped Bose-Einstein condensates
We have calculated low-lying quasiparticle excitation spectra of rotating
three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates. As opposed to the prediction of
hydrodynamic continuum theories, we find a minimum in the Tkachenko mode
spectrum at intermediate rotation frequencies of the harmonic trap. Such a
minimum can harbour a Tkachenko quasiparticle with zero excitation energy. We

Comparison of electron injection and recombination on TiO2 nanoparticles and ZnO nanorods photosensitized by phthalocyanine
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) semiconductors have similar band gap positions but TiO2performs better as an anode material in dye-sensitized solar cell applications. We compared two electrodes made of TiO2nanoparticles and ZnO nanorods sensitized by an aggregation-protected phthalocyanine derivative using ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. In agreement with previous studies, the primary electron injection is two times faster on TiO2, but contrary to the previous results the charge recombination is slower on ZnO. The latter could be due to morphology differences and the ability of the injected electrons to travel much further from the sensitizer cation in ZnO nanorodsSpanish MINECO (CTQ2017-85393-P) and the Comunidad de Madrid (FOTOCARBON, S2013/MIT-2841) are highly acknowledged. Forward observables at RHIC, the Tevatron run II and the LHC
We present predictions on the total cross sections and on the ratio of the
real part to the imaginary part of the elastic amplitude (rho parameter) for
present and future pp and pbar p colliders, and on total cross sections for
gamma p -> hadrons at cosmic-ray energies and for gamma gamma -> hadrons up to
sqrt(s)=1 TeV.
These predictions are based on a study of many possible analytic
parametrisations and invoke the current hadronic dataset at t=0. The
uncertainties on total cross sections, including the systematic theoretical
errors, reach 1% at RHIC, 3% at the Tevatron, and 10% at the LHC, whereas those
on the rho parameter are respectively 10%, 17%, and 26%.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, LaTeX, presented at the Second International

Automated Virtual Testing Rig Incorporating Multi-level Models of Gas Turbine Engines
This article describes the multi-level approach to developing the virtual testing rig of gas turbine engines and power plants. The described virtual rig is developed on the basis of computer-aided system of thermogasdynamic calculations and analysis ASTRA, developed at Samara National Research University. Existing testing rig is widely used in educational process to supply the students’ research activities with the information on engine operation in a variety of ambient and flight conditions during transients. An approach to upgrading the virtual testing rig is proposed. The described modifications would provide the capabilities to solve more complex research tasks, including investigation of influence of geometry of engine elements on the enginecharacteristics, multidisciplinary investigations, identification of engine models using the results of experimental investigations and identification of sources of engine deficiencies during the development phase of engine designing
Additional spectroscopic redshift measurements for galaxy clusters from the First Planck Catalogue
We present the results of spectroscopic redshift measurements for the galaxy
clusters from the first all-sky Planck catalogue of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich
sources, that have been mostly identified by means of the optical observations
performed previously by our team (Planck Collaboration, 2015a). The data on 13
galaxy clusters at redshifts from z=~0.2 to z=~0.8, including the improved
identification and redshift measurement for the cluster PSZ1 G141.73+14.22 at
z=0.828, are provided. The measurements were done using the data from
Russian-Turkish 1.5-m telescope (RTT-150), 2.2-m Calar Alto Observatory
telescope, and 6-m SAO RAS telescope (Bolshoy Teleskop Azimutalnyi, BTA).Comment: published in Astronomy Letter
