    In the title compound, C17H16N2O3·3H2O, the dihedral angle between the mean planes of the benzene and benzimidazole systems is 26.2 (3)°. These groups are slightly twisted around the eth­oxy­methane unit [C—C—O—C torsion angle = 177.64 (15)°]. The crystal packing is stabilized by N—H⋯O, O—H⋯N and O—H⋯O hydrogen-bond inter­actions involving the water mol­ecules. Weak π–π stacking inter­actions [centroid–centroid distances = 3.7943 (7), 3.6919 (13) and 3.7533 (14) Å] contribute to the mol­ecular stability

    Structural and Functional adaptation of the lingual papillae of the Egyptian fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus): Specific Adaptive feeding Strategies

    The current investigation was directed to clarify the correlations between the feeding strategy and lingual structure of the Egyptian fruit bat captured from the Egyptian east desert. The current work depends on twelve adult Egyptian fruit bats that observed grossly and with the help of the stereo, light, and scanning electron microscope. There were three types of the lingual papillae; one mechanical filiform and two gustatory (fungiform and circumvallate). There were seven subtypes of filiform papillae were recognized on the seven lingual regions. There were scanty numbers of fungiform papillae distributed among the filiform papillae on the lingual tip and two lateral parts of apex and body while fungiform papillae completely absent in the median part. There were three circumvallate papillae. The central bulb of circumvallate papillae surrounded by one layer of two segmented circular annular bad. The lingual tip had cornflower-like and diamond-shaped filiform papillae. Histochemical results revealed that the lingual glands were a stronger AB-positive reaction and gave dark blue color, while the reaction for the PAS-stain was negative. Also, the glands exhibited a blue color as an indication of positive AB reactivity with combined AB-PAS staining

    Genome Degradation in Brucella ovis Corresponds with Narrowing of Its Host Range and Tissue Tropism

    Brucella ovis is a veterinary pathogen associated with epididymitis in sheep. Despite its genetic similarity to the zoonotic pathogens B. abortus, B. melitensis and B. suis, B. ovis does not cause zoonotic disease. Genomic analysis of the type strain ATCC25840 revealed a high percentage of pseudogenes and increased numbers of transposable elements compared to the zoonotic Brucella species, suggesting that genome degradation has occurred concomitant with narrowing of the host range of B. ovis. The absence of genomic island 2, encoding functions required for lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis, as well as inactivation of genes encoding urease, nutrient uptake and utilization, and outer membrane proteins may be factors contributing to the avirulence of B. ovis for humans. A 26.5 kb region of B. ovis ATCC25840 Chromosome II was absent from all the sequenced human pathogenic Brucella genomes, but was present in all of 17 B. ovis isolates tested and in three B. ceti isolates, suggesting that this DNA region may be of use for differentiating B. ovis from other Brucella spp. This is the first genomic analysis of a non-zoonotic Brucella species. The results suggest that inactivation of genes involved in nutrient acquisition and utilization, cell envelope structure and urease may have played a role in narrowing of the tissue tropism and host range of B. ovis

    Chronic diarrhea is a frequent presenting symptom, both in primary care medicine and in specialized gastroenterology units. It is estimated that more than 5% of the global population suffers from chronic diarrhea. and that about 40% of these subjects are older than 60 years. The clinician is frequently faced with the need to decide which is the best therapeutic approach for these patients. While the origin of chronic diarrhea is diverse, impairment of intestinal barrier function, dysbiosis. and mucosal micro-inflammation are being increasingly recognized as underlying phenomena characterizing a variety of chronic diarrheal diseases. In addition to current pharmacological therapies, there is growing interest in alternative products such as mucoprotectants, which form a mucoadhesive film over the epithelium to reduce and protect against the development of altered intestinal permeability, dysbiosis, and mucosal micro-inflammation. This manuscript focuses on chronic diarrhea in adults, and we will review recent evidence on the ability of these natural compounds to improve symptoms associated with chronic diarrhea and to exert protective effects for the intestinal barrier

    Synthesis of hydrogels via ring-opening metathesis polymerization: factors affecting gelation

    Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) was used to synthesize hydrogels via copolymerization of a diamine monomer 3 and a novel cross-linker 5 using Grubbs\u27 third generation catalyst as initiator. Reactions were performed at two different monomer concentrations and at various initial molar ratios of cross-linker to initiator. At low monomer concentration, gelation occurred at initial cross-linker to initiator ratios of 1.5 and greater, which decreased to values of 1.05 and greater when increasing the monomer concentration. This result is in agreement with the Flory–Stockmayer theory. The gel yield and swelling properties were also found to be dependent on the cross-linker to initiator molar ratios. GPC data of the sol fractions showed quantitative consumption of both the monomer and the cross-linker. The molecular weight of the sol fraction was independent of the initiator concentration at constant cross-linker concentration of 2.5 mol%. Gels were found to swell up to 72 times their weight in 0.9% NaCl solution
