Relative Constructions in European Languages: A Look at Non-Standard
oai:lipp.ub.lmu.de:article/22This paper is concerned with relative constructions in non-standard varieties of European languages, which will be analyzed on the basis of three typological parameters (word order, relative element, syntactic role of the relativized item). The validity of claims raised in studies on the areal distribution of relative constructions in Europe will be checked against the results of the analysis, so as to ascertain whether they still hold when non-standard varieties are examined. This paper is concerned with relative constructions in non-standard varieties of European languages, which will be analyzed on the basis of three typological parameters (word order, relative element, syntactic role of the relativized item). Establishing user requirements for a mobile learning environment
This paper presents the rationale, challenges, successes and results of activities to establish the requirements for a mobile learning environment. The effort is part of a European-funded research and development project investigating context-sensitive approaches to informal, problem-based and workplace learning by using key advances in mobile technologies. The techniques used include user observation, participatory design workshops and questionnaires. Analytic techniques include UML and the Volere shell and template
Studiare tedesco nel secondo dopoguerra (1945-1960). Analisi di alcuni manuali per la scuola secondaria
In this paper four German textbooks addressed to Italian secondary school students and published between 1945 and 1960 are examined. Three parameters of analysis are considered: structure, method, syllabus. After comparing the textbooks, the issue of the status of post-WWII textbooks from today’s perspective will be discussed
Relativsätze im Deutschen und im Italienischen: Ein Vergleich unter Berücksichtigung von Nicht-Standard-Varietäten
This contribution focuses on relative constructions in German and Italian. After sketching the theoretical background, the relativization strategies attested in standard and non-standard varieties of both languages will be presented and analysed from a typological perspective. Then, an attempt will be made to understand why some of these constructions were excluded from the standard variety when both languages were codified; this can only be done by adopting a sociolinguistic perspective. Finally, the rise of a new standard variety, the so-called neo-standard, will be discussed and the relative constructions attested in it will be examined
Synthesis and evaluation of troponoids as a new class of antibiotics
Novel antibiotics
are urgently needed. The troponoids [tropones,
tropolones, and α-hydroxytropolones (α-HT)] can have anti-bacterial
activity. We synthesized or purchased 92 troponoids and evaluated
their antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus
aureus, Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Preliminary hits were assessed
for minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC80) and cytotoxicity
(CC50) against human hepatoma cells. Sixteen troponoids
inhibited S. aureus/E. coli/A. baumannii growth by ≥80% growth at 50 values >50 μM. Two selected tropolones (63 and 285) inhibited 18 methicillin-resistant S.
aureus (MRSA) strains with similar MIC80 values as against a reference strain. Two selected thiotropolones
(284 and 363) inhibited multidrug-resistant
(MDR) E. coli with MIC80 ≤30 μM. One α-HT (261) inhibited
MDR-A. baumannii with MIC80 ≤30 μM. This study opens new avenues for development
of novel troponoid antibiotics to address the critical need to combat
MDR bacterial infections
