Bell Measurements and Observables
A general matrix approach to study entangled states is presented, based on
operator completeness relations. Bases of unitary operators are considered,
with focus on irreducible representations of groups. Bell measurements for
teleportation are considered, and robustness of teleportation to various kinds

Harm reduction in correctional centres: a South African perspective based on studies in Gauteng Correctional Centres
Harm reduction in the South African correctional system has never been adopted as a policy.
What is exercised, however, is a health policy that includes certain elements of harm reduction.
Despite some expensive inclusions in the health policy approach, for example HIV testing and
provision of antiretroviral medication, basic and inexpensive measures to reduce harm are still
excluded. One example is the provision of sterilising facilities for tattooing equipment. Another
exclusion is the denial of injection drug use inside correctional centres, contrary to evidence
that this practice occurs. More complicated exclusions would include the blatant denial of
rape, in particular male rape. These matters are dealt with under the umbrella of sexual
assault, despite the existence of legislation that clearly makes provision for (male) rape behind
bars. Although the Department of Correctional Services has a positive, commendable
approach to many aspects of harm reduction, an encompassing harm reduction strategy is
urgently needed. As long as matters of harm are dealt with as if they are merely matters of
health, no strategy will be sufficient to address the risk inmates are exposed to. This article
investigates harm reduction in the South African correctional system. The Gauteng Province
(with the largest number of inmates in the country) serves as basis for the study, while national
statistics are used to contextualise various harm reduction aspects. Deficiencies in reducing

The Tsunami’s CSR Effect: MNEs and Philanthropic Responses to the Disaster
This paper contributes to the literature on CSR and International Business by linking firm internationalization to corporate philanthropy. Considering the 2004 Tsunami disaster as a highly relevant case of an international societal issue, we analyze the characteristics of the corporate response to the disaster among Fortune Global 500 firms. We find that home region, degree of internationalization, firm size and profitability most strongly influenced the propensity of firms to donate as well as the value of their donations
Model for the hydration of non-polar compounds and polymers
We introduce an exactly solvable statistical-mechanical model of the
hydration of non-polar compounds, based on grouping water molecules in clusters
where hydrogen bonds and isotropic interactions occur; interactions between
clusters are neglected. Analytical results show that an effective strengthening
of hydrogen bonds in the presence of the solute, together with a geometric
reorganization of water molecules, are enough to yield hydrophobic behavior. We
extend our model to describe a non-polar homopolymer in aqueous solution,
obtaining a clear evidence of both ``cold'' and ``warm'' swelling transitions.
This suggests that our model could be relevant to describe some features of

Field-Dependent Critical Current in Type-II Superconducting Strips: Combined Effect of Bulk Pinning and Geometrical Edge Barrier
Recent theoretical and experimental research on low-bulk-pinning
superconducting strips has revealed striking dome-like magnetic-field
distributions due to geometrical edge barriers. The observed magnetic-flux
profiles differ strongly from those in strips in which bulk pinning is
dominant. In this paper we theoretically describe the current and field
distributions of a superconducting strip under the combined influence of both a
geometrical edge barrier and bulk pinning at the strip's critical current Ic,
where a longitudinal voltage first appears. We calculate Ic and find its
dependence upon a perpendicular applied magnetic field Ha. The behavior is
governed by a parameter p, defined as the ratio of the bulk-pinning critical
current Ip to the geometrical-barrier critical current Is0. We find that when p
> 2/pi and Ip is field-independent, Ic vs Ha exhibits a plateau for small Ha,
followed by the dependence Ic-Ip ~ 1/Ha in higher magnetic fields.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Fig. 1 revised, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Qubit Disentanglement and Decoherence via Dephasing
We consider whether quantum coherence in the form of mutual entanglement
between a pair of qubits is susceptible to decay that may be more rapid than
the decay of the coherence of either qubit individually. An instance of
potential importance for solid state quantum computing arises if embedded
qubits (spins, quantum dots, Cooper pair boxes, etc.) are exposed to global and
local noise at the same time. Here we allow separate phase-noisy channels to
affect local and non-local measures of system coherence. We find that the time
for decay of the qubit entanglement can be significantly shorter than the time

Long-term male fertility after treatment with radioactive iodine for differentiated thyroid carcinoma
Context: Whilst radioactive iodine (RAI) is often administered in the treatment for differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC), long-term data on male fertility after RAI are scarce. Objective: To evaluate long-term male fertility after RAI for DTC, and to compare semen quality before and after RAI. Design, setting, and patients: Multicenter study including males with DTC ≥2 years after their final RAI treatment with a cumulative activity of ≥3.7 GBq. Main outcome measure(s): Semen analysis, hormonal evaluation, and a fertility-focused questionnaire. Cut-off scores for 'low semen quality' were based on reference values of the general population as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). Results: Fifty-one participants had a median age of 40.5 (interquartile range (IQR): 34.0-49.6) years upon evaluation and a median follow-up of 5.8 (IQR: 3.0-9.5) years after their last RAI administration. The median cumulative administered activity of RAI was 7.4 (range: 3.7-23.3) GBq. The proportion of males with a low semen volume, concentration, progressive motility, or total motile sperm count did not differ from the 10th percentile cut-off of a general population (P = 0.500, P = 0.131, P = 0.094, and P = 0.500, respectively). Cryopreserved semen was used by 1 participant of the 20 who had preserved semen. Conclusions: Participants had a normal long-term semen quality. The proportion of participants with low semen quality parameters scoring below the 10th percentile did not differ from the general population. Cryopreservation of semen of males with DTC is not crucial for conceiving a child after RAI administration but may be considered in individual cases
Non-Equilibrium Quasiclassical Theory for Josephson Structures
We present a non-equilibrium quasiclassical formalism suitable for studying
linear response ac properties of Josephson junctions. The non-equilibrium
self-consistency equations are satisfied, to very good accuracy, already in
zeroth iteration. We use the formalism to study ac Josephson effect in a
ballistic superconducting point contact. The real and imaginary parts of the ac
linear conductance are calculated both analytically (at low frequencies) and
numerically (at arbitrary frequency). They show strong temperature, frequency,
and phase dependence. Many anomalous properties appear near phi = pi. We

Measurement of the Charged Multiplicities in b, c and Light Quark Events from Z0 Decays
Average charged multiplicities have been measured separately in , and
light quark () events from decays measured in the SLD experiment.
Impact parameters of charged tracks were used to select enriched samples of
and light quark events, and reconstructed charmed mesons were used to select
quark events. We measured the charged multiplicities:

which we derived the differences between the total average charged
multiplicities of or quark events and light quark events: and . We compared
these measurements with those at lower center-of-mass energies and with
perturbative QCD predictions. These combined results are in agreement with the
QCD expectations and disfavor the hypothesis of flavor-independent

Time-integrated luminosity recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- collider
This article is the Preprint version of the final published artcile which can be accessed at the link below.We describe a measurement of the time-integrated luminosity of the data collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at the ϒ(4S), ϒ(3S), and ϒ(2S) resonances and in a continuum region below each resonance. We measure the time-integrated luminosity by counting e+e-→e+e- and (for the ϒ(4S) only) e+e-→μ+μ- candidate events, allowing additional photons in the final state. We use data-corrected simulation to determine the cross-sections and reconstruction efficiencies for these processes, as well as the major backgrounds. Due to the large cross-sections of e+e-→e+e- and e+e-→μ+μ-, the statistical uncertainties of the measurement are substantially smaller than the systematic uncertainties. The dominant systematic uncertainties are due to observed differences between data and simulation, as well as uncertainties on the cross-sections. For data collected on the ϒ(3S) and ϒ(2S) resonances, an additional uncertainty arises due to ϒ→e+e-X background. For data collected off the ϒ resonances, we estimate an additional uncertainty due to time dependent efficiency variations, which can affect the short off-resonance runs.
