Un modelo para el análisis de las mediaciones rituales y su relación con los procesos de cambio social

El artículo propone un modelo para el estudio de las mediaciones rituales que asume un doble desafío: a) articular las múltiples dimensiones de la acción ritual de un modo flexible, conservando su complejidad y variedad y b) dar unidad a su diversidad fenomenológica, preservando sus diferencias. El concepto de “mediación” se propone por su versatilidad y perspectiva, que le permiten actuar como común denominador de las diversas articulaciones que presentan los sistemas rituales con los elementos de su entorno sociocultural y natural. Éste se orienta a explicar el trabajo ritual a partir de sus relaciones con los elementos del contexto y las situaciones comunicativas donde ejecuta el rito y seguir su dinámica de transformaciones en el marco de procesos históricos.This article proposes a model for the study of the ritual mediations that assumes a double challenge: a) to articulate the multiple dimensions of the ritual action in a flexible way, preserving its complexity and variety and b) to unify its phenomenological diversity, preserving the differences. The concept of “mediation” is proposed because of its versatility and perspective. These characteristics allow the mediation to act as a common factor of the diverse articulations that the ritual systems present with its sociocultural and natural environment. This one is oriented to explain the ritual work from its relations with the elements of the context and the communicative situations where it executes the rite and follows its dynamic of transformations in the frame of historical proceses

Hombres, imaginarios y paisajes, la construcción social del espacio habitado: el caso de buzos y pescadores de Isla Guafo, Patagonia chilena

La presente investigación se centra en el análisis de las prácticas sociales de buzos, asistentes y tripulantes de embarcaciones que explotan el alga luga roja (Gigartina skottsberguii) en isla Guafo, un territorio ubicado en el sur de Chile y que se considerada la puerta de entrada a la Patagonia costera-insular. Mediante una observación etnográfica detallada se verán como se asientan las estructuras económicas y la vida cotidiana de los hombres que habitan el área en forma transitoria, orientando nuestro análisis también a la comprensión de como ellos y los imaginarios impactan en la construcción del paisaje local. El trabajo se compone de un apartado teórico-metodológico que fundamenta nuestra investigación, un planteamiento histórico que contextualiza el espacio estudiado y un análisis antropológico que dimensiona los componentes culturales existentes en el complejo entramado social construido por los buzos. Veremos como operan diariamente diversos riesgos asociados al trabajo y frente a ellos como existen distintos elementos que ayudan a aminorar las presiones y los peligros a que se ven enfrentados los cuerpos. Como las formas productivas establecidas en la isla son fundamentales para entender las dinámicas sociales y las relaciones establecidas entre los grupos y con las geografías. El viaje del zorro al cielo y su tío el tigre: Texturas transculturales amerindias en dos repertorios de relatos mapuche del zorro

This paper shows the Amerindian cross-cultural contents of two repertories of Mapuche tales of the fox. The first one corresponds to a fox’s journey to heaven, originated in Central Andean area. The second one is about a fox and his uncle, the tiger, taken from Chaco narratives. Through a narratological analysis, it stands out the recurrence of the motives that give form to the tales. In relation to that, we argue that the representation of the fox as a trickster, common to these narratives, expresses a general problem, propitious for cross cultural representation. The contradiction in the fox’s behavior exposes the tension between basic necessities and vital impulses, and the cultural norms to conform them, which constitutes a common experience of human condition. El artículo muestra los contenidos transculturales amerindios en dos repertorios de relatos mapuche del zorro. El primero de ellos corresponde al viaje del zorro al cielo, originario del área centro andina. El segundo es el del zorro y su tío el tigre procedente de las narrativas del Chaco. A través de un análisis narratológico, se destaca la recurrencia de los motivos que estructuran las tramas narrativas y dan forma a los relatos. Al respecto argumentamos que la representación del zorro como un personaje transgresor, común en las narrativas, expresa un problema general, por lo mismo, proclive a su simbolización transcultural. Las contradicciones en la conducta del zorro exponen las tensiones entre las necesidades básicas y los impulsos vitales del personaje y las normas culturales para la administración de las mismas, lo que constituye una experiencia común a la condición humana

Pañilwe ñi dungu, las voces del metal

A partir del análisis de las voces del metal en mapudungun, este artículo se aproxima al trabajo en metales de la cultura mapuche durante el período prehispánico a partir del contraste entre los antecedentes lingüísticos y arqueológicos. El texto aborda los datos disponibles para los términos de la lengua mapuche que designan el oro, la plata, el cobre, el plomo y el estaño. El método de investigación empleado es el estudio de las constelaciones semióticas de las voces, es decir, de las series de relaciones de significación que se articulan en torno a estas unidades de sentido, lo que permite su interpretación y uso. Ello considera un análisis metalingüístico, translingüístico y supralingüístico o contextual de los términos, que incluye sus usos sociales y la documentación desde la arqueología. Sobre la base de estos antecedentes se argumenta sobre la antigüedad, las relaciones transculturales de las voces y la importancia de las distintas materialidades para el trabajo en metales en la cultura mapuche prehispánica

Los eventos de movimiento en mapudungun: exploraciones desde una perspectiva diacrónica y areal

This article shows the Andean affinities of some terms that encode Mapudungun motion events. The method of study employed is the diachronic comparative analysis of linguistic forms. The data has been taken from primary and secondary metalinguistic sources of Mapudungun and Andean languages. The results show correspondences between Mapudungun, Puquina, Quechua, Aymara, Kallawaya and Kunza. This suggests the existence of contacts between languages that reveal the existence of long-standing intercultural relationships that should continue to be investigated.El artículo muestra las afinidades andinas de algunos términos que codifican eventos de movimiento del mapudungun. El método de estudio empleado es el análisis comparativo diacrónico de las formas lingüísticas. Los datos han sido tomados fuentes metalingüísticas primarias y secundarias del mapudungun y lenguas andinas. Los resultados muestran correspondencias entre el mapudungun, el puquina, el quechua, el aymara, el kallawaya y el kunza. Se infiere de ello la existencia de contactos entre las lenguas que revelan la existencia relaciones interculturales de larga data que deben continuar siendo investigadas

Labour-centred development in Latin America: two cases of alternative development

The ‘pink tide’ in Latin America, or what remains of it, is drawing increasing criticisms from the political left for its inability to confront existing socio-structural inequalities. This article contributes to these debates in two ways. First, as a means of understanding better the development strategies that have been followed by left-leaning governments, it highlights and critiques what it labels Elite Development Theory (EDT) encompassing Washington Consensus and Statist Political Economy. It shows how despite its self-stated objectives - the amelioration of the conditions of the poor and their uplifting - EDT is grounded in elite assumptions about social change: States and corporations are posited as prime-movers in the development process while collective efforts of labouring classes to pursue their own developmental strategies are ignored and/or de-legitimated. Exploitation, oppression and the ideological delegitimation of labouring class collective actions form the core of EDT. The second contribution of this article is to argue for an alternative form of what it terms labour-centred development (LCD). This argument is supported through an examination of the Chilean cordones industriales and Argentinian empresas recuperadas por sus trabajadores (ERT) movements. The article concludes that whilst LCD may be a rarity, its existence offers the basis for alternative development theory and strategy

Expression of FAP-1 by human colon adenocarcinoma: implication for resistance against Fas-mediated apoptosis in cancer

Although colon carcinoma cells express Fas receptors, they are resistant to Fas-mediated apoptosis. Defects within the intracellular Fas signal transduction may be responsible. We investigated whether the Fas-associated phosphatase-1 (FAP-1), an inhibitor of Fas signal transduction, contributed to this resistance in colon carcinomas. In vivo, apoptosis of cancer cells was detected in situ using terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labelling ( TUNEL). FAP-1, FasR, and Fas ligand (FasL) were detected using immunohistochemistry. In vitro, colon carcinoma cells were primarily cultured, and their sensitivity to Fas-mediated apoptosis was evaluated by treatment with agonistic anti-FasR CH11 IgM monoclonal antibody in the presence or absence of synthetic Ac-SLV (serine-leucine-valine) tripeptide. Fas-associated phosphatase-1 expression was detected in 20 out of 28 colon adenocarcinomas. In vivo, a positive correlation between the percentage of apoptotic tumour cells and the number of FasL-positive tumour infiltrating lymphocytes was observed in FAP-1 negative cancers, but not in FAP-1-positive ones. Primarily cultured colon cancer cells, which were refractory to CH-11-induced apoptosis, had higher expression of FAP-1 on protein and mRNA levels than the sensitive group. Resistance to Fas-mediated apoptosis in tumour cells could be abolished by Ac-SLV tripetides. Fas-associated phosphatase-1 expression protects colon cancer cells from Fas-mediated apoptosis, and blockade of FAP-1 and FasR interaction sensitises tumour cells to Fas-dependent apoptosis

Local Increase of Arginase Activity in Lesions of Patients with Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Ethiopia

The leishmaniases are a complex of diseases caused by Leishmania parasites. Currently, the diseases affect an estimated 12 million people in 88 countries, and approximately 350 million more people are at risk. The leishmaniases belong to the most neglected tropical diseases, affecting the poorest populations, for whom access to diagnosis and effective treatment are often not available. Leishmania parasites infect cells of the immune system called macrophages, which have the capacity to eliminate the intracellular parasites when they receive the appropriate signals from other cells of the immune system. In nonhealing persistent leishmaniasis, lymphocytes are unable to transmit the signals to macrophages required to kill the intracellular parasites. The local upregulation of the enzyme arginase has been shown to impair lymphocyte effector functions at the site of pathology. In this study, we tested the activity of this enzyme in skin lesions of patients presenting with localized cutaneous leishmaniasis. Our results show that arginase is highly upregulated in these lesions. This increase in arginase activity coincides with lower expression of a signalling molecule in lymphocytes, which is essential for efficient activation of these cells. These results suggest that increased arginase expression in the localized cutaneous lesions might contribute to persistent disease in patients presenting with cutaneous leishmaniasis
