    Teaching, learning and assessing in grade 10: an experimental pathway to the culture of theorems

    International audienceThis report deals with the design of a teaching and learning pathway that encompasses an assessment method coherent with the educational long term goal chosen by the teacher. More specifically, it is aimed at contributing to promote high school learners’ culture of theorems – i.e. mastery of conjecturing and proving supported by meta-mathematical knowledge. The assessment method, which combines formative assessment all during the teaching sequence and final assessment based on student’s self-reflective report on her learning trajectory, has been implemented in 10th grade classes. A written essay, in form of letter written by the students to a fictitious schoolmate at the end of the pathway, is analysed in order to evaluate the potential of the implemented course

    Hysterectomy and Bilateral Salpingoovariectomy in a Transsexual Subject without Visible Scaring

    Objective. To report on the use of laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) for the management of total hysterectomy (TH) with bilateral salpingoovariectomy (BSO) in a subject affected by gender identity disorder. Design. Case report. Setting. University Hospital. Patient(s). A 27-year-old affected by Gender Identity Disorder underwent a hysterectomy and BSO as part of surgical sex reassignment. Intervention(s). Laparoendoscopic single-site surgery access for TH and BSO. Main Outcome Measure(s). The procedure was performed without incident. The trocar placement was easy and safe, without inadvertent port removal. No vascular or visceral injuries, loss of pneumoperitoneum, or intraoperative port site bleeding occurred. Result(s). A detailed description of the technique of a single-site surgery for management of hysterectomy and BSO. Conclusion. Our case presents the first report of single-site surgery for surgical treatment of subjects affected by GID

    ALMA reveals the molecular gas properties of five star-forming galaxies across the main sequence at 3

    International audienceWe present the detection of CO(5-4) with S/N> 7 - 13 and a lower CO transition with S/N > 3 (CO(4-3) for 4 galaxies, and CO(3-2) for one) with ALMA in band 3 and 4 in five main sequence star-forming galaxies with stellar masses 3-6x10^10 M/M_sun at 3 < z < 3.5. We find a good correlation between the total far-infrared luminosity LFIR and the luminosity of the CO(5-4) transition L'CO(5-4), where L'CO(5-4) increases with SFR, indicating that CO(5-4) is a good tracer of the obscured SFR in these galaxies. The two galaxies that lie closer to the star-forming main sequence have CO SLED slopes that are comparable to other star-forming populations, such as local SMGs and BzK star-forming galaxies; the three objects with higher specific star formation rates (sSFR) have far steeper CO SLEDs, which possibly indicates a more concentrated episode of star formation. By exploiting the CO SLED slopes to extrapolate the luminosity of the CO(1-0) transition, and using a classical conversion factor for main sequence galaxies of alpha_CO = 3.8 M_sun(K km s^-1 pc^-2)^-1, we find that these galaxies are very gas rich, with molecular gas fractions between 60 and 80%, and quite long depletion times, between 0.2 and 1 Gyr. Finally, we obtain dynamical masses that are comparable with the sum of stellar and gas mass (at least for four out of five galaxies), allowing us to put a first constraint on the alpha_CO parameter for main sequence galaxies at an unprecedented redshift

    Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) CXCL13 was shown to correlate with markers of intrathecal inflammation and CSF oligoclonal IgM bands (IgMOB) have been associated with a more severe Multiple Sclerosis (MS) course.We correlated CSF CXCL13 levels with clinical, MRI and CSF parameters, including CSF IgMOB, in 110 Clinically Isolated Syndrome (CIS) patients.CSF CXCL13 levels correlated with CSF cell count, total protein, IgG Index and with the presence of CSF IgGOB and IgMOB.CSF CXCL13 levels ≄. 15.4. pg/ml showed a good positive predictive value and specificity for a MS diagnosis and for a clinical relapse within one year from onset

    Fermi Large Area Telescope Constraints on the Gamma-ray Opacity of the Universe

    The Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) includes photons with wavelengths from ultraviolet to infrared, which are effective at attenuating gamma rays with energy above ~10 GeV during propagation from sources at cosmological distances. This results in a redshift- and energy-dependent attenuation of the gamma-ray flux of extragalactic sources such as blazars and Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). The Large Area Telescope onboard Fermi detects a sample of gamma-ray blazars with redshift up to z~3, and GRBs with redshift up to z~4.3. Using photons above 10 GeV collected by Fermi over more than one year of observations for these sources, we investigate the effect of gamma-ray flux attenuation by the EBL. We place upper limits on the gamma-ray opacity of the Universe at various energies and redshifts, and compare this with predictions from well-known EBL models. We find that an EBL intensity in the optical-ultraviolet wavelengths as great as predicted by the "baseline" model of Stecker et al.
