Shared and species-specific patterns of nascent Y chromosome evolution in two guppy species
Sex chromosomes form once recombination is halted around the sex-determining locus between a homologous pair of chromosomes, resulting in a male-limited Y chromosome. We recently characterized the nascent sex chromosome system in the Trinidadian guppy (Poeciliareticulata). The guppy Y is one of the youngest animal sex chromosomes yet identified, and therefore offers a unique window into the early evolutionary forces shaping sex chromosome formation, particularly the rate of accumulation of repetitive elements and Y-specific sequence. We used comparisons between male and female genomes in P. reticulata and its sister species, Endler’s guppy (P. wingei), which share an ancestral sex chromosome, to identify male-specific sequences and to characterize the degree of differentiation between the X and Y chromosomes. We identified male-specific sequence shared between P. reticulata and P. wingei consistent with a small ancestral non-recombining region. Our assembly of this Y-specific sequence shows substantial homology to the X chromosome, and appears to be significantly enriched for genes implicated in pigmentation. We also found two plausible candidates that may be involved in sex determination. Furthermore, we found that the P. wingei Y chromosome exhibits a greater signature of repetitive element accumulation than the P. reticulata Y chromosome. This suggests that Y chromosome divergence does not necessarily correlate with the time since recombination suppression. Inter-study reproducibility of arterial spin labelling magnetic resonance imaging for measurement of renal perfusion in healthy volunteers at 3 Tesla
Background:
Measurement of renal perfusion is a crucial part of measuring kidney function. Arterial spin labelling magnetic resonance imaging (ASL MRI) is a non-invasive method of measuring renal perfusion using magnetised blood as endogenous contrast. We studied the reproducibility of ASL MRI in normal volunteers.<p></p>
Methods:
ASL MRI was performed in healthy volunteers on 2 occasions using a 3.0 Tesla MRI scanner with flow-sensitive alternating inversion recovery (FAIR) perfusion preparation with a steady state free precession (True-FISP) pulse sequence. Kidney volume was measured from the scanned images. Routine serum and urine biochemistry were measured prior to MRI scanning.<p></p>
Results:
12 volunteers were recruited yielding 24 kidneys, with a mean participant age of 44.1 ± 14.6 years, blood pressure of 136/82 mmHg and chronic kidney disease epidemiology formula estimated glomerular filtration rate (CKD EPI eGFR) of 98.3 ± 15.1 ml/min/1.73 m2. Mean kidney volumes measured using the ellipsoid formula and voxel count method were 123.5 ± 25.5 cm3, and 156.7 ± 28.9 cm3 respectively. Mean kidney perfusion was 229 ± 41 ml/min/100 g and mean cortical perfusion was 327 ± 63 ml/min/100 g, with no significant differences between ASL MRIs. Mean absolute kidney perfusion calculated from kidney volume measured during the scan was 373 ± 71 ml/min. Bland Altman plots were constructed of the cortical and whole kidney perfusion measurements made at ASL MRIs 1 and 2. These showed good agreement between measurements, with a random distribution of means plotted against differences observed. The intra class correlation for cortical perfusion was 0.85, whilst the within subject coefficient of variance was 9.2%. The intra class correlation for whole kidney perfusion was 0.86, whilst the within subject coefficient of variance was 7.1%.<p></p>
Conclusions:
ASL MRI at 3.0 Tesla provides a repeatable method of measuring renal perfusion in healthy subjects without the need for administration of exogenous compounds. We have established normal values for renal perfusion using ASL MRI in a cohort of healthy volunteers.<p></p>
RLC effects in fine pitch anisotropic conductive film connections
The resistance, capacitance and inductance of Anisotropic Conductive Film (ACF) connections determine
their high frequency electrical characteristics. The presence of capacitance and inductance in the ACF joint
contributes to time delays and crosstalk noise as well as simultaneous switching noise (SSN) within the
circuit. The purpose of this paper is to establish an experimental method for estimating the capacitance and
inductance of a typical ACF connection. This can help to provide a more detailed understanding of the high
frequency performance of ACF assemblies.
Design/methodology/approach
Experiments on the transient response of an ACF joint were performed using a digital oscilloscope capable
of achieving the required ns resolution. An equivalent circuit model is proposed in order to quantify the
capacitance (C) and inductance (L) of a typical ACF connection and this model is fitted to the experimental
data. The equivalent model consisted of two resistors, an inductor, and a capacitor.
Findings
The capacitance and inductance of a typical ACF connection were estimated from the measured transient
response using Kirchhoff's Voltage Law. The method for estimation of R, L, and C from the transient
response is discussed, as are the RLC effects on the high frequency electrical characteristics of the ACF
connection.
Research limitations/implications
There was decay time deviation between the calculation and the experiment. It may be resulted from the
skin effect in the high frequency response and the adhesive surrounding joint as well. The main reason may
be the capacitance dielectric lost. Further research work will be done to test the dielectric lost in the ACA
joint.

Magnetism and superconductivity in CeRh_{1-x}Ir_xIn_5 heavy fermion materials
We report on zero-field muon spin relaxation studies of cerium based
heavy-fermion materials CeRh_{1-x}Ir_xIn_5. In the superconducting x=0.75 and 1
compositions muon spin relaxation functions were found to be temperature
independent across T_c; no evidence for the presence of electronic magnetic
moments was observed. The x=0.5 material is antiferromagnetic below T_N=3.75 K
and superconducting below T_c=0.8 K. Muon spin realxation spectra show the
gradual onset of damped coherent oscillations characteristic of magnetic order
below T_N. At 1.65 K the total oscillating amplitude accounts for at least 85%
of the sample volume. No change in muon precession frequency or amplitude is
detected on cooling below T_c, indicating the microscopic coexistence of

Critical slowing down in the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd_2Ti_2O_7
Longitudinal-field muon spin relaxation experiments have been carried out in
the paramagnetic state of single-crystal Gd_2Ti_2O_7 just above the phase
transition at T_m = 1.0 K. At high applied fields the exponential relaxation
time T_1 is proportional to field, whereas T_1 saturates below a crossover
field B_c that is ~2.5 T at 1.5 K and decreases as T_m is approached. At low
fields the relaxation rate increases markedly as the freezing temperature is
approached, as expected for critical slowing down of the spin fluctuations, but
the increase is suppressed by applied field. This behavior is consistent with
the very long autocorrelation function cutoff time implied by the low value of

Employees' perceptions of cycle commuting:A qualitative study
Purpose – This study aims to provide an in-depth individual level understanding of the psychological factors that affect cycle commuting.
Design/methodology/approach – A total of 15 participants (eight cycle commuters and seven potential cycle commuters) from a “cycle-friendly” employer based in a Scottish city took part in the study. Semi-structured interviews and interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) were used to collect and analyse data.
Findings – The present study found that cyclists are more aware of the benefits of cycle commuting than potential cyclists. Those who did not currently cycle to work displayed a heightened awareness of the challenges of cycling to work, whereas cyclists reported more coping strategies for negotiating or overcoming the challenges involved in cycle commuting. These individual cognitions are potentially modifiable through psychological interventions.
Research limitations/implications – Future research should be carried out on samples in different contexts to examine whether some of the findings would be supported in other populations.
Practical applications – The findings from this paper suggest that psychological interventions based on challenging perceptions of the benefits of and barriers to cycling may have a valuable role to play in enhancing cycle commuting rates.
Originality/value – This study uses IPA to explore the complexities of perceptions in relation to cycle commuting. It also brings to light the types of coping strategies used to enable cyclists to overcome some of their challenges associated with cycle commuting.</p
Thermodynamics of non-local materials: extra fluxes and internal powers
The most usual formulation of the Laws of Thermodynamics turns out to be
suitable for local or simple materials, while for non-local systems there are
two different ways: either modify this usual formulation by introducing
suitable extra fluxes or express the Laws of Thermodynamics in terms of
internal powers directly, as we propose in this paper. The first choice is
subject to the criticism that the vector fluxes must be introduced a posteriori
in order to obtain the compatibility with the Laws of Thermodynamics. On the
contrary, the formulation in terms of internal powers is more general, because
it is a priori defined on the basis of the constitutive equations. Besides it
allows to highlight, without ambiguity, the contribution of the internal powers
in the variation of the thermodynamic potentials. Finally, in this paper, we
consider some examples of non-local materials and derive the proper expressions

The symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in PuCoGa
The symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in single-crystalline
PuCoGa ( K) is investigated via zero- and transverse-
field muon spin relaxation (SR) measurements, probing the possible
existence of orbital and/or spin moments (time reversal-symmetry violation TRV)
associated with the superconducting phase and the in-plane magnetic-field
penetration depth in the mixed state, respectively. We find no
evidence for TRV, and show that the superfluid density, or alternatively,
, are for . Taken together these measurements are consistent with an even-parity

The use of an e-learning constructivist solution in workplace learning
We wished to investigate whether an e-learning approach which uses constructivist principles can be successfully applied to train employees in a highly specialised skill thought to require expert individuals and extensive prolonged training. The approach involved the development of an e-learning package which included simulations and interactivity, then experimental testing in a case study workplace environment with the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data to assess the effectiveness of the package. Our study shows that this e-learning strategy improved the skills of the inexperienced
operator significantly. We therefore propose that such programmes could be used as a work based training aid and used as a model system for the training of employees in complex skilled tasks in the workplace. This research demonstrates that the e-learning can be applied outside the traditional learning environment to train unskilled employees to undertake complex practical tasks which traditionally would involve prohibitively expensive instruction. This work also illustrates that simulations and interactivity are powerful tools in the design of successful e-learning packages in preparing learners for real world practical situations. Finally this study shows that workplace learners can be better served by elearning environments rather than conventional training as they allow asynchronous learning and private study which are valued by employees who have other demands on their time and are more comfortable receiving tuition privately Relevance to industry: E-learning using constructivist principles, and incorporating simulations and interactivity can be used successfully in the training of highly specialised and skilled tasks required in the

First release of the IPHAS catalogue of new extended planetary nebulae
Date of Acceptance: 30/06/2014We present the first results of our search for new, extended planetary nebulae (PNe) based on careful, systematic, visual scrutiny of the imaging data from the Isaac Newton Telescope Photometric Ha Survey of the Northern Galactic plane (IPHAS). The newly uncovered PNe will help to improve the census of this important population of Galactic objects that serve as key windows into the late-stage evolution of low- to intermediate-mass stars. They will also facilitate study of the faint end of the ensemble Galactic PN luminosity function. The sensitivity and coverage of IPHAS allows PNe to be found in regions of greater extinction in the Galactic plane and/or those PNe in a more advanced evolutionary state and at larger distances compared to the general Galactic PN population. Using a set of newly revised optical diagnostic diagrams in combination with access to a powerful, new, multiwavelength imaging data base, we have identified 159 true, likely and possible PNe for this first catalogue release. The ability of IPHAS to unveil PNe at low Galactic latitudes and towards the Galactic Anticentre, compared to previous surveys, makes this survey an ideal tool to contribute to the improvement of our knowledge of the whole Galactic PN population.Peer reviewe
