    Time evolution of damage under variable ranges of load transfer

    We study the time evolution of damage in a fiber bundle model in which the range of interaction of fibers varies through an adjustable stress transfer function recently introduced. We find that the lifetime of the material exhibits a crossover from mean field to short range behavior as in the static case. Numerical calculations showed that the value at which the transition takes place depends on the system's disorder. Finally, we have performed a microscopic analysis of the failure process. Our results confirm that the growth dynamics of the largest crack is radically different in the two limiting regimes of load transfer during the first stages of breaking.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, revtex4 styl

    A meta‐analysis of published studies of endothelial dysfunction does not support its routine clinical use

    Summary Background Endothelial dysfunction is a marker of future cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, yet epidemiological studies have yielded inconsistent results. We therefore studied the association between endothelial dysfunction and CVD under diverse circumstances. Methods and results Literature-based meta-analysis of prospective observational studies with ≄ 12 months of follow-up published in Medline and having information on endothelial function and CVD outcomes. Tabular data on participant characteristics, endothelial function assessments and incident CVD outcomes were abstracted from individual studies. Random-effects meta-analysis was used to quantify pooled associations, and I2 statistic to evaluate between-study heterogeneity. Potential sources of heterogeneity were explored by subgroup analyses and meta-regression. Thirty five studies involving 17,206 participants met the inclusion criteria. During more than 80,000 person-years of observation, up to 2755 CVD events were accrued, yielding a pooled relative risk (RR) of 1.25 (95% confidence interval 1.15–1.35) for CVD comparing top (i.e. more severe) vs. bottom (less severe) third of endothelial dysfunction. There was significant between-study heterogeneity and evidence of publication bias. RRs varied importantly according to the method used to ascertain endothelial function, and were higher among older individuals and among participants with risk factors for CVD or established CVD at baseline. Conclusions Although endothelial dysfunction is an important determinant of cardiovascular outcomes in people with pre-existing CVD, current evidence base does not support its use as a potentially useful measurement for risk stratification in people at lower risk of CVD

    Novel approaches of nanoceria with magnetic, photoluminescent, and gas-sensing properties

    The modification of CeO2 with rare-earth elements opens up a wide range of applications as biomedical devices using infrared emission as well as magnetic and gas-sensing devices, once the structural, morphological, photoluminescent, magnetic, electric, and gas-sensing properties of these systems are strongly correlated to quantum electronic transitions between rare-earth f-states among defective species. Quantitative phase analysis revealed that the nanopowders are free from secondary phases and crystallize in the fluorite-type cubic structure. Magnetic coercive field measurements on the powders indicate that the substitution of cerium with lanthanum (8 wt %), in a fluorite-type cubic structure, created oxygen vacancies and led to a decrease in the fraction of Ce species in the 3+ state, resulting in a stronger room-temperature ferromagnetic response along with high coercivity (160 Oe). In addition to the magnetic and photoluminescent behavior, a fast response time (5.5 s) was observed after CO exposure, indicating that the defective structure of ceria-based materials corresponds to the key of success in terms of applications using photoluminescent, magnetic, or electrical behaviors.Fil: Rocha, Leandro S.R..     Capacitance spectroscopy in quantum dots: Addition spectra and decrease of tunneling rates

    A theoretical study of single electron capacitance spectroscopy in quantum dots is presented. Exact diagonalizations and the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation have been used to shed light over some of the unresolved aspects. The addition spectra of up to 15 electrons is obtained and compared with the experiment. We show evidence for understanding the decrease of the single electron tunneling rates in terms of the behavior of the spectral weight function. (To appear in Phys. Rev.     Effect of an extract of Centella asiatica on the biodistribution of sodium pertechnetate (Na<sup>99m</sup>TcO<sub>4</sub>) and on the fixation of radioactivity on blood constituents

    This study evaluates the effects of an acute treatment with a Centella asiatica (CA) extract on the biodistribution of the radiopharmaceutical Na99mTcO4 and on the fixation of technetium-99m on blood constituents. Wistar rats were treated with CA extract and, 1 hour after, Na99mTcO4 was administered; organs/tissues were withdrawn and weighted. The radioactivity was counted to calculate the percentage of activity per gram (%ATI/g). Also, blood samples were withdrawn, plasma (P), blood cells (BC), insoluble fraction (IF) and soluble fractions of P and BC were isolated and the radioactivity was counted to calculate the percentage of activity (%ATI). Data indicated that the acute treatment with CA extract changed significantly (p99mTcO4 and the fixation of the technetium-99m on blood constituents in an acute treatment

    Predictors of Virologic Failure in HIV/AIDS Patients Treated with Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy in Brasília, Brazil During 2002–2008

    Little data exists concerning the efficacy of the antiretroviral therapy in the Federal District in Brazil, therefore in order to improve HIV/AIDS patients’ therapy and to pinpoint hot spots in the treatment, this research work was conducted. Of 139 HIV/AIDS patients submitted to the highly active antiretroviral therapy, 12.2% failed virologically. The significant associated factors related to unresponsiveness to the lentiviral treatment were: patients’ place of origin (OR = 3.28; IC95% = 1.0–9.73; P = 0.032) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection (RR = 2.90; IC95% = 1.19–7.02; P = 0.019). In the logistic regression analysis, the remaining variables in the model were: patients’ birthplace (OR = 3.28; IC95% = 1.10–9.73; P = 0.032) and tuberculosis comorbidity (OR = 3.82; IC95% = 1.19–12.22; P = 0.024). The patients enrolled in this survey had an 88.0% therapeutic success rate for the maximum period of one year of treatment, predicting that T CD4+ low values and elevated viral loads at pretreatment should be particularly considered in tuberculosis coinfection, besides the availability of new antiretroviral drugs displaying optimal activity both in viral suppression and immunological reconstitution

    The exposure of the hybrid detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory

    The Pierre Auger Observatory is a detector for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. It consists of a surface array to measure secondary particles at ground level and a fluorescence detector to measure the development of air showers in the atmosphere above the array. The "hybrid" detection mode combines the information from the two subsystems. We describe the determination of the hybrid exposure for events observed by the fluorescence telescopes in coincidence with at least one water-Cherenkov detector of the surface array. A detailed knowledge of the time dependence of the detection operations is crucial for an accurate evaluation of the exposure. We discuss the relevance of monitoring data collected during operations, such as the status of the fluorescence detector, background light and atmospheric conditions, that are used in both simulation and reconstruction.Comment: Paper accepted by Astroparticle Physic
