Dispersionless Toda hierarchy and two-dimensional string theory
The dispersionless Toda hierarchy turns out to lie in the heart of a recently
proposed Landau-Ginzburg formulation of two-dimensional string theory at
self-dual compactification radius. The dynamics of massless tachyons with
discrete momenta is shown to be encoded into the structure of a special
solution of this integrable hierarchy. This solution is obtained by solving a
Riemann-Hilbert problem. Equivalence to the tachyon dynamics is proven by
deriving recursion relations of tachyon correlation functions in the machinery
of the dispersionless Toda hierarchy. Fundamental ingredients of the
Landau-Ginzburg formulation, such as Landau-Ginzburg potentials and tachyon
Landau-Ginzburg fields, are translated into the language of the Lax formalism.
Furthermore, a wedge algebra is pointed out to exist behind the Riemann-Hilbert
problem, and speculations on its possible role as generators of ``extra''

Generalized DPW method and an application to isometric immersions of space forms
Let be a complex Lie group and denote the group of maps from
the unit circle into , of a suitable class. A differentiable
map from a manifold into , is said to be of \emph{connection
order } if the Fourier expansion in the loop parameter of the
-family of Maurer-Cartan forms for , namely F_\lambda^{-1}
\dd F_\lambda, is of the form . Most
integrable systems in geometry are associated to such a map. Roughly speaking,
the DPW method used a Birkhoff type splitting to reduce a harmonic map into a
symmetric space, which can be represented by a certain order map,
into a pair of simpler maps of order and respectively.
Conversely, one could construct such a harmonic map from any pair of
and maps. This allowed a Weierstrass type description
of harmonic maps into symmetric spaces. We extend this method to show that, for
a large class of loop groups, a connection order map, for ,
splits uniquely into a pair of and maps. As an
application, we show that constant non-zero curvature submanifolds with flat
normal bundle of a sphere or hyperbolic space split into pairs of flat
submanifolds, reducing the problem (at least locally) to the flat case. To
extend the DPW method sufficiently to handle this problem requires a more
general Iwasawa type splitting of the loop group, which we prove always holds

The spread of epidemic disease on networks
The study of social networks, and in particular the spread of disease on
networks, has attracted considerable recent attention in the physics community.
In this paper, we show that a large class of standard epidemiological models,
the so-called susceptible/infective/removed (SIR) models can be solved exactly
on a wide variety of networks. In addition to the standard but unrealistic case
of fixed infectiveness time and fixed and uncorrelated probability of
transmission between all pairs of individuals, we solve cases in which times
and probabilities are non-uniform and correlated. We also consider one simple
case of an epidemic in a structured population, that of a sexually transmitted
disease in a population divided into men and women. We confirm the correctness
of our exact solutions with numerical simulations of SIR epidemics on networks.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
Search for a strongly decaying neutral charmed pentaquark
We present a search for a charmed pentaquark decaying strongly to
. Finding no evidence for such a state, we set limits on the cross
section times branching ratio relative to and under particular

Study of the D^0 \to pi^-pi^+pi^-pi^+ decay
Using data from the FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab, we present new
measurements for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay mode . We measure the branching ratio .
An amplitude analysis has been performed, a first for this channel, in order to
determine the resonant substructure of this decay mode. The dominant component
is the decay , accounting for 60% of the decay rate.
The second most dominant contribution comes from the decay , with a fraction of 25%. We also study the
line shape and resonant substructure. Using the helicity formalism for the
angular distribution of the decay , we measure

A Single-Lumen Central Venous Catheter for Continuous and Direct Intra-abdominal Pressure Measurement
Background: Abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Therefore, the need for a good diagnostic tool to predict intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and progression to ACS is paramount. Bladder pressure (BP) has been used for several years for intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) measurement but has the disadvantage that it is not a continuous measurement. In this study, a single-lumen central venous catheter (CVC) is placed through the abdominal wall into the abdominal cavity to continuously and directly monitor the intra-abdominal pressure (CDIAP). The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of CDIAP to measure BP as a representative of the true IAP. Methods: Both BP and CDIAP were prospectively recorded on a variety of surgical patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) from March 2003 up to December 2004. At the end of the surgical procedure, the CVC was placed through the abdominal wall and connected to a pressure transducer. In addition, the BP was measured through the urine drainage port after clamping the catheter and filling the bladder with 50 ml of 0.9% saline. At least three paired measurements (BP and CDIAP) were performed for at least one day on the ICU in a standardized manner at preset time intervals on each patient. The paired measurements were compared using the Bland-Altman (B-A) method. Data are presented as mean ± standard deviation. Results: Over a period of 22 months (March 2003 until December 2004), 125 paired measurements of both BP and CDIAP were recorded on 25 patients. The mean age was 72.4 ± 6.6 years. Eighteen patients underwent central vascular surgery, and seven patients with peritonitis received laparotomy. The mean CDIAP was 11.4 ± 4.8 (range 2-30) mmHg, and the BP was 12.9 ± 5.3 (range 3-37) mmHg. The mean difference between CDIAP and BP was 1.6 ± 2.7 mmHg. There was an acceptable level of agreement (intraclass correlation 0.82) between IAP measured by BP and IAP measured via CDIAP. Conclusion: Continuous direct intra-abdominal pressure measurement proved that the BP measurement approach of Kron is representative of the IAP. CDIAP measurement is accurate and makes it easier for the nursing staff to be informed of the IAP
Topological String Amplitudes, Complete Intersection Calabi-Yau Spaces and Threshold Corrections
We present the most complete list of mirror pairs of Calabi-Yau complete
intersections in toric ambient varieties and develop the methods to solve the
topological string and to calculate higher genus amplitudes on these compact
Calabi-Yau spaces. These symplectic invariants are used to remove redundancies
in examples. The construction of the B-model propagators leads to compatibility
conditions, which constrain multi-parameter mirror maps. For K3 fibered
Calabi-Yau spaces without reducible fibers we find closed formulas for all
genus contributions in the fiber direction from the geometry of the fibration.
If the heterotic dual to this geometry is known, the higher genus invariants
can be identified with the degeneracies of BPS states contributing to
gravitational threshold corrections and all genus checks on string duality in
the perturbative regime are accomplished. We find, however, that the BPS
degeneracies do not uniquely fix the non-perturbative completion of the
heterotic string. For these geometries we can write the topological partition
function in terms of the Donaldson-Thomas invariants and we perform a
non-trivial check of S-duality in topological strings. We further investigate
transitions via collapsing D5 del Pezzo surfaces and the occurrence of free Z2
quotients that lead to a new class of heterotic duals.Comment: 117 pages, 1 Postscript figur
Measurement of open charm production in +Au collisions at =200 GeV
We present the first comprehensive measurement of and
their charge conjugate states at mid-rapidity in +Au collisions at
=200 GeV using the STAR TPC. The directly measured open charm
multiplicity distribution covers a broad transverse momentum region of
0 GeV/. The measured at mid-rapidity for is
and the measured
and ratios are approximately equal with a magnitude of . The total cross section per
nucleon-nucleon collision extracted from this study is mb. The direct measurement of open charm production is
consistent with STAR single electron data. This cross section is higher than
expectations from PYTHIA and other pQCD calculations. The measured
distribution is harder than the pQCD prediction using the Peterson

Gallium(III) chelates of mixed phosphonate-carboxylate triazamacrocyclic ligands relevant to nuclear medicine: structural, stability and in vivo studies
Three triaza macrocyclic ligands, H6NOTP (1,4,7-triazacyclononane-N,N′,N″-trimethylene phosphonic acid),
H4NO2AP (1,4,7-triazacyclononane-N-methylenephosphonic acid-N′,N″-dimethylenecarboxylic acid), and
H5NOA2P (1,4,7-triazacyclononane-N,N′-bis(methylenephosphonic acid)-N″-methylene carboxylic acid), and
their gallium(III) chelates were studied in view of their potential interest as scintigraphic and PET (Positron
Emission Tomography) imaging agents. A 1H, 31P and 71Ga multinuclear NMR study gave an insight on the
structure, internal dynamics and stability of the chelates in aqueous solution. In particular, the analysis of 71Ga
NMR spectra gave information on the symmetry of the Ga3+ coordination sphere and the stability of the chelates towards hydrolysis. The 31P NMR spectra afforded information on the protonation of the non-coordinated oxygen atoms from the pendant phosphonate groups and on the number of species in solution. The 1H NMR spectra allowed the analysis of the structure and the number of species in solution.
31P and 1H NMR titrations combined with potentiometry afforded the measurement of the protonation
constants (log KHi) and the microscopic protonation scheme of the triaza macrocyclic ligands. The remarkably
high thermodynamic stability constant (log KGaL =34.44 (0.04) and stepwise protonation constants of Ga
(NOA2P)2− were determined by potentiometry and 69Ga and 31P NMR titrations. Biodistribution and gamma
imaging studies have been performed on Wistar rats using the radiolabeled 67Ga(NO2AP)− and 67Ga
(NOA2P)2−chelates, having both demonstrated to have renal excretion. The correlation of the molecular

Azimuthal anisotropy: the higher harmonics
We report the first observations of the fourth harmonic (v_4) in the
azimuthal distribution of particles at RHIC. The measurement was done taking
advantage of the large elliptic flow generated at RHIC. The integrated v_4 is
about a factor of 10 smaller than v_2. For the sixth (v_6) and eighth (v_8)
