    Freeze-dehydration is a relatively new method being used in food preservation. Dehydration of food is an ancient procedure, but the freezing of food has come into common use since the turn of the century. The combined procedure of freezing and dehydration is a new innovation. Most of the work on freeze-dehydration has been done within the last two decades. Freeze-dehydration is a process in which the foodstuff is frozen; while still in the frozen state, the moisture is withdrawn under vacuum. An advantage of this method of processing is that the moisture content of the foodstuff can be reduced to less than 1 percent but the product still retains its original structure. According to Goldblith et. al. (1963), there are many problems to be solved just as there were when thermal processing and freezing preservation became a reality. Freeze-dehydration is a costly process. Goldblith et. al. (1963) stated, Raw material of optimum quality is of prime importance in freeze-dehydration to produce foods of long storage life and high quality. Two undesirable qualities of freeze-dried foods are poor texture and adverse or weakness of flavor. Much of the adverse flavor is caused by lipid oxidation. It is therefore the purpose of this study to try to determine the effect age, preparation method, storage time, and storage temperature would have on the palatability and fatty acids of freeze-dried pheasant

Molecular models were proposed as a standard to judge specific interactions in topologies of molecules of ML and derived organometallic assemblies. In OMCs‐Bi(V), on chelation, polarity of Bi(V) get reduced to great extent due to overlap of ML orbital. As a result, delocalization of π‐electrons density clouds get spread over the surface of chelating ring and enhances penetration power of OMCs‐Bi(V) into lipid membranes. This influenced binding with enzyme sites in microorganisms. Some electron set for bonding groups present in ligands moieties display extensive biological activity that may be responsible for increase in hydrophobic character and liposolubility of supramolecular topologies of organometallic of assemblies; ultimately enhanced biological activity of OMCs‐Bi(V)

    Bringing together approaches to reporting on within species genetic diversity

    1. Genetic diversity is one of the three main levels of biodiversity recognised in the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Fundamental for species adaptation to environmental change, genetic diversity is nonetheless under-reported within global and national indicators. When it is reported, the focus is often narrow and confined to domesticated or other commercial species. 2. Several approaches have recently been developed to address this shortfall in reporting on genetic diversity of wild species. While multiplicity of approaches is helpful in any development process, it can also lead to confusion among policy makers and heighten a perception that conservation genetics is too abstract to be of use to organisations and governments. 3. As the developers of five of the different approaches, we have come together to explain how various approaches relate to each other and propose a scorecard, as a unifying reporting mechanism for genetic diversity. 4. Policy implications. We believe the proposed combined approach captures the strengths of its components and is practical for all nations and subnational governments. It is scalable and can be used to evaluate species conservation projects as well as genetic conservation projects.ISSN:0021-8901ISSN:1365-266

    The coalition for conservation genetics: working across organizations to build capacity and achieve change in policy and practice

    The Coalition for Conservation Genetics (CCG) brings together four eminentorganizations with the shared goal of improving the integration of geneticinformation into conservation policy and practice. We provide a historicalcontext of conservation genetics as a field and reflect on current barriers toconserving genetic diversity, highlighting the need for collaboration acrosstraditional divides, international partnerships, and coordinated advocacy. Wethen introduce the CCG and illustrate through examples how a coalitionapproach can leverage complementary expertise and improve the organiza-tional impact at multiple levels. The CCG has proven particularly successfulat implementing large synthesis-type projects, training early-career scientists,and advising policy makers. Achievements to date highlight the potential forthe CCG to make effective contributions to practical conservation policy andmanagement that no one“parent”organization could achieve on its own.Finally, we reflect on the lessons learned through forming the CCG, and ourvision for the futur

    Behavioral Interventions as an Adjunctive Treatment for Canine Epilepsy: A Missing Part of the Epilepsy Management Toolkit?

    Epilepsy is a common, complex and often challenging neurological disorder to treat in the dog, with 20–30% of dogs resistant to conventional medical therapies, and associated with cognitive and behavioral comorbidities and early death. Behavioral interventions are an emerging area of focus in the adjunctive treatment of drug-resistant human epilepsy patients, with studies indicating positive effects of a variety of interventions including relaxation-based techniques and behavioral therapy interventions. Behavioral interventions have the potential not only to improve seizure control, but also improve behavioral comorbidities and general quality of life in this hard to treat patient group. Despite striking similarities between human and canine epilepsy patients, including the recognition of co-morbid anxiety in epilepsy patients, behavioral interventions have yet to be studied in dogs. This is compounded by several licensed psychopharmaceutical agents for dogs being contra-indicated in epilepsy patients. We present evidence from human studies of the efficacy of behavioral interventions to improve seizure control, psychiatric comorbidities and quality of life, and propose that adapting such interventions for canine patients may be a valuable addition to the epilepsy management toolkit. There is a need for multi-center, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trials to confirm the effects of behavioral interventions on seizure frequency in veterinary medicine. In the absence of such evidence to date, the use of established behavioral medicine techniques to reduce stress and improve the mental health of these often sensitive and challenging patients is advocated, with a greater role for behaviorists in the management of epilepsy patients alongside neurologists and general practitioners

    Global commitments to conserving and monitoring genetic diversity are now necessary and feasible

    Global conservation policy and action have largely neglected protecting and monitoring genetic diversity—one of the three main pillars of biodiversity. Genetic diversity (diversity within species) underlies species’ adaptation and survival, ecosystem resilience, and societal innovation. The low priority given to genetic diversity has largely been due to knowledge gaps in key areas, including the importance of genetic diversity and the trends in genetic diversity change; the perceived high expense and low availability and the scattered nature of genetic data; and complicated concepts and information that are inaccessible to policymakers. However, numerous recent advances in knowledge, technology, databases, practice, and capacity have now set the stage for better integration of genetic diversity in policy instruments and conservation efforts. We review these developments and explore how they can support improved consideration of genetic diversity in global conservation policy commitments and enable countries to monitor, report on, and take action to maintain or restore genetic diversity

    A prospective service evaluation of acceptance and commitment therapy for patients with refractory epilepsy

    Objective: The aims of this service evaluation were to explore the effectiveness of a psychotherapeutic treatment for patients with epilepsy based on the acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) approach and to assess whether this treatment is likely to be cost-effective. Method: We conducted an uncontrolled prospective study of consecutive patients with refractory epilepsy referred for outpatient psychological treatment to a single psychotherapist because of emotional difficulties related to their seizure disorder. Participants were referred by consultant neurologists, neuropsychologists, or epilepsy nurses, completed a set of validated self-report questionnaires (Short Form - 12 version 2, Generalized Anxiety Disorder - 7, Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy, Work and Social Adjustment Scale, and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale), and reported their seizure frequency at referral, the end of therapy, and six months posttherapy. Patients received a maximum of 20 sessions of one-to-one psychological treatment supported by a workbook. Cost-effectiveness was estimated based on the calculation of quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gains associated with the intervention. Results: Sixty patients completed the prepsychotherapy and postpsychotherapy questionnaires, among whom 41 also provided six-month follow-up data. Patients received six to 20 sessions of psychotherapy (mean = 11.5, S.D. = 9.6). Psychotherapy was associated with significant medium to large positive effects on depression, anxiety, quality of life, self-esteem, and work and social adjustment ( ps < .001), which were sustained six months after therapy. The mean cost of the psychotherapy was £445.6, and, assuming that benefits were maintained for at least six months after the end of therapy, the cost per QALY was estimated to be £11,140 (€14,119, $18,016; the cost per QALY would be half this amount if the benefits lasted one year). Conclusion: The findings of this pilot study indicate that the described psychotherapeutic intervention may be a cost-effective treatment for patients with epilepsy. The results suggest that a randomized controlled trial of the psychotherapy program is justified

    Bone mineral density in Jamaican men on androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) has been reported to reduce the bone mineral density (BMD) in men with prostate cancer (CaP). However, Afro-Caribbeans are under-represented in most studies. The aim was to determine the effect of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) on the bone mineral density (BMD) of men with prostate cancer in Jamaica.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study consisted of 346 Jamaican men, over 40 years of age: 133 ADT treated CaP cases (group 1), 43 hormone-naïve CaP controls (group 2) and 170 hormone naïve controls without CaP (group 3). Exclusion criteria included metastatic disease, bisphosphonate therapy or metabolic disease affecting BMD. BMD was measured with a calcaneal ultrasound and expressed in S.D. units relative to young adult men (T score), according to the World Health Organization definition. Patient weight, height and BMI were assessed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mean ± sd, age of patients in group 1 (75± 7.4 yrs) was significantly greater than groups 2 and 3 (67 ± 8.1 yrs; 65±12.0 yrs). There was no significant difference in weight and BMI between the 3 groups. . The types of ADT (% of cases, median duration in months with IQR) included LHRH (Luteinizing hormone releasing hormone) analogues (28.6%, 17.9, IQR 20.4), oestrogens (9.8%, 60.5, IQR 45.6) anti-androgens (11.3%, 3.3, IQR 15.2) and orchiectomy (15.7%, 43.4, IQR 63.9). Unadjusted t score of group 1, mean ± sd, (-1.6± 1.5) was significantly less than group 2 (-0.9±1.1) and group 3 (-0.7±1.4), p <0.001. Ninety three (69.9%), 20 (45%) and 75 (42%) of patients in groups 1, 2 and 3 respectively were classified as either osteopenic or osteoporotic (p<0.001). Adjusting for age, there was a significant difference in t scores between groups 1 and 2 as well as between groups 1 and 3 (p<0.001). Compared with oestrogen therapy and adjusting for duration of therapy, the odds of low bone mineral density (osteopenia or osteoporosis) with LHRH analogue was 4.5 (95%CI, 14.3 to 3.4); with anti-androgens was 5.9 (95%CI, 32.7 to 5); with orchiectomy was 7.3 (95%CI, 30 to 5.8) and multiple drugs was 9.2 ((95%CI, 31 to 7.1).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>ADT is associated with lower BMD in Jamaican men on hormonal therapy for prostate cancer.</p
