Petrov types of slowly rotating fluid balls
Circularly rotating axisymmetric perfect fluid space-times are investigated
to second order in the small angular velocity. The conditions of various
special Petrov types are solved in a comoving tetrad formalism. A number of
theorems are stated on the possible Petrov types of various fluid models. It is
shown that Petrov type II solutions must reduce to the de Sitter spacetime in
the static limit. Two space-times with a physically satisfactory
energy-momentum tensor are investigated in detail. For the rotating
incompressible fluid, it is proven that the Petrov type cannot be D. The
equation of the rotation function can be solved for the Tolman type
IV fluid in terms of quadratures. It is also shown that the rotating version of

Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) scanner instrument anomaly investigation
The results of an ad-hoc committee investigation of in-Earth orbit operational anomalies noted on two identical Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) Scanner instruments on two different spacecraft busses is presented. The anomalies are attributed to the bearings and the lubrication scheme for the bearings. A detailed discussion of the pertinent instrument operations, the approach of the investigation team and the current status of the instruments now in Earth orbit is included. The team considered operational changes for these instruments, rework possibilities for the one instrument which is waiting to be launched, and preferable lubrication considerations for specific space operational requirements similar to those for the ERBE scanner bearings
The hard to soft spectral transition in LMXBs - affected by recondensation of gas into an inner disk
Soft and hard spectral states of X-ray transient sources reflect two modes of
accretion, accretion via a geometrically thin, optically thick disk or an
advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF). The luminosity at transition between
these two states seems to vary from source to source, or even for the same
source during different outbursts, as observed for GX 339-4. We investigate how
the existence of an inner weak disk in the hard state affects the transition
luminosity. We evaluate the structure of the corona above an outer truncated
disk and the resulting disk evaporation rate for different irradiation. In some
cases, recent observations of X-ray transients indicate the presence of an
inner cool disk during the hard state. Such a disk can remain during quiescence
after the last outburst as long as the luminosity does not drop to very low
values (10^-4 to 10^-3 of the Eddington luminosity). Consequently, as part of
the matter accretes via the inner disk, the hard irradiation is reduced. The
hard irradiation is further reduced, occulted and partly reflected by the inner
disk. This leads to a hard-soft transition at a lower luminosity if an inner
disk exists below the ADAF. This seems to be supported by observations for GX

Endocrine Effects of Inhaled Corticosteroids in Children
Inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) are widely used as first-line treatment for various chronic respiratory illnesses. Advances in devices and formulations have reduced their local adverse effects. However, as delivery of ICSs to the lungs improves, the systemic absorption increases, and an adverse effect profile similar to, although milder than, oral corticosteroids has emerged. The most serious potential adverse effect is adrenal insufficiency, which can be life threatening. Adrenal insufficiency occurs most in patients taking the highest doses of ICSs but is reported with moderate or even low doses as well. Our recommendations include greater vigilance in testing adrenal function than current standard practice. In patients with diabetes mellitus (types 1 and 2), an increase in glucose levels is likely, and diabetes medication adjustment may be needed when initiating or increasing ICSs. The risk of linear growth attenuation and adverse effects on bone mineral density is generally low but should be considered in the face of additional risk factors. On behalf of the Pediatric Endocrine Society Drugs and Therapeutics Committee, we present a review of the endocrine adverse effects of ICSs in children and offer recommendations relating to testing and referral. Limited data in particular realms diminish the strength of certain recommendations, and clinical judgment continues to be paramount
Flexible Session Management in a Distributed Environment
Many secure communication libraries used by distributed systems, such as SSL,
TLS, and Kerberos, fail to make a clear distinction between the authentication,
session, and communication layers. In this paper we introduce CEDAR, the secure
communication library used by the Condor High Throughput Computing software,
and present the advantages to a distributed computing system resulting from
CEDAR's separation of these layers. Regardless of the authentication method
used, CEDAR establishes a secure session key, which has the flexibility to be
used for multiple capabilities. We demonstrate how a layered approach to
security sessions can avoid round-trips and latency inherent in network
authentication. The creation of a distinct session management layer allows for
optimizations to improve scalability by way of delegating sessions to other
components in the system. This session delegation creates a chain of trust that
reduces the overhead of establishing secure connections and enables centralized
enforcement of system-wide security policies. Additionally, secure channels
based upon UDP datagrams are often overlooked by existing libraries; we show
how CEDAR's structure accommodates this as well. As an example of the utility
of this work, we show how the use of delegated security sessions and other
techniques inherent in CEDAR's architecture enables US CMS to meet their
scalability requirements in deploying Condor over large-scale, wide-area grid
systems
Manipulation of Cold Atomic Collisions by Cavity QED Effects
We show how the dynamics of collisions between cold atoms can be manipulated
by a modification of spontaneous emission times. This is achieved by placing
the atomic sample in a resonant optical cavity. Spontaneous emission is
enhanced by a combination of multiparticle entanglement together with a higher
density of modes of the modified vacuum field, in a situation akin to
superradiance. A specific situation is considered and we show that this effect

Clinical trial of laronidase in Hurler syndrome after hematopoietic cell transplantation.
BackgroundMucopolysaccharidosis I (MPS IH) is a lysosomal storage disease treated with hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) because it stabilizes cognitive deterioration, but is insufficient to alleviate all somatic manifestations. Intravenous laronidase improves somatic burden in attenuated MPS I. It is unknown whether laronidase can improve somatic disease following HCT in MPS IH. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of laronidase on somatic outcomes of patients with MPS IH previously treated with HCT.MethodsThis 2-year open-label pilot study of laronidase included ten patients (age 5-13 years) who were at least 2 years post-HCT and donor engrafted. Outcomes were assessed semi-annually and compared to historic controls.ResultsThe two youngest participants had a statistically significant improvement in growth compared to controls. Development of persistent high-titer anti-drug antibodies (ADA) was associated with poorer 6-min walk test (6MWT) performance; when patients with high ADA titers were excluded, there was a significant improvement in the 6MWT in the remaining seven patients.ConclusionsLaronidase seemed to improve growth in participants <8 years old, and 6MWT performance in participants without ADA. Given the small number of patients treated in this pilot study, additional study is needed before definitive conclusions can be made
Gravitomagnetism and Relative Observer Clock Effects
The gravitomagnetic clock effect and the Sagnac effect for circularly
rotating orbits in stationary axisymmetric spacetimes are studied from a
relative observer point of view, clarifying their relationships and the roles
played by special observer families. In particular Semer\'ak's recent
characterization of extremely accelerated observers in terms of the two-clock
clock effect is shown to be complemented by a similarly special property of the
