Introduction: Vaginal candidiasis is considered as an important public health problem worldwide and its incidence has increased nowadays. In recent years, inappropriate and disproportionate use of antifungal drugs, automedication as well as non compliance have caused drug resistance. Methods: This study aimed at determining the in vitro antifungal susceptibility patterns of Candida speciesisolated from female genital tract at Yaoundé Bethesda Hospital in Cameroon. Two hundred and fourthy five women (age range: 15 years to 49 years) attending the hospital were recruited between January and June 2014 in this cross sectional study. Vaginal smears were collected using sterile swabs from each participant and cultured on sabouraud dextrose agar supplemented with chloramphenico l 0.5%; identification of Candida spp. was performed following standard methods. The disk diffusion method was used for antifungal susceptibility testing. Results: Out of the 245 vaginal smears collected, 94 (38.4%) strains of yeast were isolates among which 43 (45.7%) were Candida albicans and 51 (54.3%) were non albicans. The highest susceptibility of the isolates was seen for nystatin 62 (83.78%), ketoconazole 61 (82.43%) and fluconazole 60 (81.08%). Conclusion: Despite the noticeable resistance of Candida spp. isolates to miconazole and itraconazole, the results indicate that nystatin, ketoconazole and fluconazole are the drugs of choice for the therapy of vaginal candidiasis in this region

Study of zircaloy-4 cladding air degradation at high temperature

    Get PDF
Prix de la Meilleure Communication EuropéenneInternational audienceZircaloy cladding, providing the first containment of UO2 fuel in Pressurised Water Reactors, can be exposed to air during accidental situations. This might occur during reactor operation (in case of a core meltdown accident with subsequent reactor pressure vessel breaching), under shutdown conditions with the upper head of the vessel removed, in spent fuel storage pools after accidental loss of cooling or during degraded transport situations. The fuel assemblies inadequately cooled, heat up and as a result, corrosion of Zircaloy claddings takes place. This paper is devoted to the kinetic analysis of Zy4 corroded at 850°C in 20% oxygen - 80% nitrogen partial pressure atmosphere to support the comprehension of the degradation mechanisms involved during the post-transition stage

Human lung fibroblasts may modulate dendritic cell phenotype and function: results from a pilot in vitro study

    Get PDF
International audienceAbstractIn human lung fibrotic lesions, fibroblasts were shown to be closely associated with immature dendritic cell (DC) accumulation. The aim of the present pilot study was to characterize the role of pulmonary fibroblasts on DC phenotype and function, using co-culture of lung fibroblasts from patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and from control patients, with a DC cell line MUTZ-3. We observed that co-culture of lung control and IPF fibroblasts with DCs reduced the expression of specific DC markers and down-regulated their T-cell stimulatory activity. This suggests that pulmonary fibroblasts might sustain chronic inflammation in the fibrotic lung by maintaining in situ a pool of immature DCs

Serum albumin level as a risk factor for mortality in burn patients

    Get PDF
OBJECTIVE: Hypoalbuminemia is a common clinical deficiency in burn patients and is associated with complications related to increased extravascular fluid, including edema, abnormal healing, and susceptibility to sepsis. Some prognostic scales do not include biochemical parameters, whereas others consider them together with comorbidities. The purpose of this study was to determine whether serum albumin can predict mortality in burn patients. METHODS: We studied burn patients ≥16 years of age who had complete clinical documentation, including the Abbreviated Burn Severity Index, serum albumin, globulin, and lipids. Sensitivity and specificity analyses were performed to determine the cut-off level of albumin that predicts mortality. RESULTS: In our analysis of 486 patients, we found that mortality was higher for burns caused by flame (p = 0.000), full-thickness burns (p = 0.004), inhalation injuries (p = 0.000), burns affecting >;30% of the body surface area (p = 0.001), and burns associated with infection (p = 0.008). Protein and lipid levels were lower in the patients who died (

BaCO: A Fast and Portable Bayesian Compiler Optimization Framework

We introduce the Bayesian Compiler Optimization framework (BaCO), a general purpose autotuner for modern compilers targeting CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs. BaCO provides the flexibility needed to handle the requirements of modern autotuning tasks. Particularly, it deals with permutation, ordered, and continuous parameter types along with both known and unknown parameter constraints. To reason about these parameter types and efficiently deliver high-quality code, BaCO uses Bayesian optimiza tion algorithms specialized towards the autotuning domain. We demonstrate BaCO's effectiveness on three modern compiler systems: TACO, RISE & ELEVATE, and HPVM2FPGA for CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs respectively. For these domains, BaCO outperforms current state-of-the-art autotuners by delivering on average 1.36x-1.56x faster code with a tiny search budget, and BaCO is able to reach expert-level performance 2.9x-3.9x faster

Characterization of human mesenchymal stem cell secretome at early steps of adipocyte and osteoblast differentiation

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>It is well established that adipose tissue plays a key role in energy storage and release but is also a secretory organ and a source of stem cells. Among different lineages, stem cells are able to differentiate into adipocytes and osteoblasts. As secreted proteins could regulate the balance between both lineages, we aimed at characterizing the secretome of human multipotent adipose-derived stem cell (hMADS) at an early step of commitment to adipocytes and osteoblasts.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A proteomic approach, using mono-dimensional electrophoresis and tandem mass spectrometry, allowed us to identify a total of 73 proteins at day 0 and day 3 of adipocyte and osteoblast differentiation. Analysis of identified proteins showed that 52 % corresponded to classical secreted proteins characterized by a signal peptide, that 37 % previously described in the extracellular compartment were devoid of signal peptide and that 11 % neither exhibited a signal peptide nor had been previously described extracellularly. These proteins were classified into 8 clusters according to their function. Quantitative analysis has been performed for 8 candidates: PAI-1, PEDF, BIGH3, PTX3, SPARC, ENO1, GRP78 and MMP2. Among them, PAI-1 was detected at day 0 and day 3 of osteoblast differentiation but never in adipocyte secretome. Furthermore we showed that PAI-1 mRNA was down-regulated in the bone of ovariectomized mice.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Given its regulation during the early events of hMADS cell differentiation and its status in ovariectomized mice, PAI-1 could play a role in the adipocyte/osteoblast balance and thus in bone diseases such as osteoporosis.</p

Pharak region, traversed by the Everest trekking route, sees thousands of hikers every year who come to discover the Khumbu high-mountain landscapes. Formerly a land of pasture, this region has been the scene of significant socio-economic changes since the early 1970s. The population, mainly Sherpa, is gradually abandoning agro-pastoral activities to become more involved in the tourism industry. By generating economic benefits, creating demand and capturing a portion of the labour force, tourism is engendering important transformations in agriculture in the region. Trade exchanges are on the increase and we are witnessing a reconfiguration of the agrarian landscape according to market opportunities. Market gardening, in particular, is gaining momentum and is the subject of a new local business. Based on this example, this article aims to highlight the originality of this way of exploiting the environment, which has developed along with the growth of tourism, yet independently of urban growth and road construction
