    Pu(III) and Cm(III) in the presence of EDTA: aqueous speciation, redox behavior, and the impact of Ca(II)

    The impact of calcium on the solubility, redox behavior, and speciation of the An(iii)–EDTA (An = Pu or Cm) system under reducing, anoxic conditions was investigated through batch solubility experiments, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), density functional theory (DFT), and time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS). Batch solubility experiments were conducted from undersaturation using Pu(OH)(3)(am) as the solid phase in contact with 0.1 M NaCl–NaOH–HCl–EDTA–CaCl(2) solutions at [EDTA] = 1 mM, pH(m) = 7.5–9.5, and [CaCl(2)] ≤20 mM. Additional samples targeted brine systems represented by 3.5 M CaCl(2) and WIPP simulated brine. Solubility data in the absence of calcium were well-described by Pu(iii)–EDTA thermodynamic models, thus supporting the stabilization of Pu(iii)–EDTA complexes in solution. Cm(iii)–EDTA TRLFS data suggested the stepwise hydrolysis of An(iii)-EDTA complexes with increasing pH, and current Pu(iii)-EDTA solubility models were reassessed to evaluate the possibility of including Pu(iii)–OH–EDTA complexes and to calculate preliminary formation constants. Solubility data in the presence of calcium exhibited nearly constant log m(Pu)(tot), as limited by total ligand concentration, with increasing [CaCl(2)](tot), which supports the formation of calcium-stabilized Pu(iii)–EDTA complexes in solution. XAS spectra without calcium showed partial oxidation of Pu(iii) to Pu(iv) in the aqueous phase, while calcium-containing experiments exhibited only Pu(iii), suggesting that Ca–Pu(iii)–EDTA complexes may stabilize Pu(iii) over short timeframes (t ≤45 days). DFT calculations on the Ca–Pu(iii)–EDTA system and TRLFS studies on the analogous Ca–Cm(iii)–EDTA system show that calcium likely stabilizes An(iii)–EDTA complexes but can also potentially stabilize An(iii)–OH–EDTA species in solution. This hints towards the possible existence of four major complex types within Ca–An(iii)–EDTA systems: An(iii)–EDTA, An(iii)–OH–EDTA, Ca–An(iii)–EDTA, and Ca–An(iii)–OH–EDTA. While the exact stoichiometry and degree of ligand protonation within these complexes remain undefined, their formation must be accounted for to properly assess the fate and transport of plutonium under conditions relevant to nuclear waste disposal

    Background Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide, and nonfatal suicide attempts, which occur far more frequently, are a major source of disability and social and economic burden. Both have substantial genetic etiology, which is partially shared and partially distinct from that of related psychiatric disorders. Methods We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 29,782 suicide attempt (SA) cases and 519,961 controls in the International Suicide Genetics Consortium (ISGC). The GWAS of SA was conditioned on psychiatric disorders using GWAS summary statistics via multitrait-based conditional and joint analysis, to remove genetic effects on SA mediated by psychiatric disorders. We investigated the shared and divergent genetic architectures of SA, psychiatric disorders, and other known risk factors. Results Two loci reached genome-wide significance for SA: the major histocompatibility complex and an intergenic locus on chromosome 7, the latter of which remained associated with SA after conditioning on psychiatric disorders and replicated in an independent cohort from the Million Veteran Program. This locus has been implicated in risk-taking behavior, smoking, and insomnia. SA showed strong genetic correlation with psychiatric disorders, particularly major depression, and also with smoking, pain, risk-taking behavior, sleep disturbances, lower educational attainment, reproductive traits, lower socioeconomic status, and poorer general health. After conditioning on psychiatric disorders, the genetic correlations between SA and psychiatric disorders decreased, whereas those with nonpsychiatric traits remained largely unchanged. Conclusions Our results identify a risk locus that contributes more strongly to SA than other phenotypes and suggest a shared underlying biology between SA and known risk factors that is not mediated by psychiatric disorders.publishedVersio

    Pneumatic Actuator Development for MRI Robots

    The Linear Pneumatic-Hydraulic MRI Robot Actuator was designed as a modular solution to precision motion in a medical MRI environment. The implementation of this non-ferrous and nearly completely non-metallic linear driver mechanism gives an operator the ability to place grippers, sensors, syringes, and other medical instruments with an extraordinary level of flexibility and precision. Its modular design allows for rapid prototyping of robotic systems and paves the way for more advanced and complex minimally invasive procedures under real-time MRI guidance. This enables decreased setup and adjustment time as well as higher precision and reduced complications. The team's design will be used in future MRI robot designs and research in collaboration with the UMass Medical School

    ThinkTank: Introducing a Centralized Resource System to the FIRST Community

    The FIRST Robotics Competition was founded to inspire students and promote the education and involvement of young adults in science and engineering, where students, teachers and professionals could build a robot to compete in a new game every year. One of the biggest hurdles students face when designing is obtaining solid technological information and connecting and working with others. To help overcome these obstacles, the project team designed and tested a social networking website to allow the members to share knowledge and skills, and resources that are beneficial in all aspects of building a robot and running a team. This website, the "ThinkTank", contains articles and community features, and a framework to accommodate more tools for the future

    Surfactant therapy for COVID-19 related ARDS: a retrospective case–control pilot study

    Abstract Background COVID-19 causes acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and depletes the lungs of surfactant, leading to prolonged mechanical ventilation and death. The feasibility and safety of surfactant delivery in COVID-19 ARDS patients have not been established. Methods We performed retrospective analyses of data from patients receiving off-label use of exogenous natural surfactant during the COVID-19 pandemic. Seven COVID-19 PCR positive ARDS patients received liquid Curosurf (720 mg) in 150 ml normal saline, divided into five 30 ml aliquots) and delivered via a bronchoscope into second-generation bronchi. Patients were matched with 14 comparable subjects receiving supportive care for ARDS during the same time period. Feasibility and safety were examined as well as the duration of mechanical ventilation and mortality. Results Patients showed no evidence of acute decompensation following surfactant installation into minor bronchi. Cox regression showed a reduction of 28-days mortality within the surfactant group, though not significant. The surfactant did not increase the duration of ventilation, and health care providers did not convert to COVID-19 positive. Conclusions Surfactant delivery through bronchoscopy at a dose of 720 mg in 150 ml normal saline is feasible and safe for COVID-19 ARDS patients and health care providers during the pandemic. Surfactant administration did not cause acute decompensation, may reduce mortality and mechanical ventilation duration in COVID-19 ARDS patients. This study supports the future performance of randomized clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of meticulous sub-bronchial lavage with surfactant as treatment for patients with COVID-19 ARDS

    Galápagos mockingbirds tolerate introduced parasites that affect Darwin’s finches

    Introduced parasites threaten native host species that lack effective defenses. Such parasites increase the risk of extinction, particularly in small host populations like those on islands. If some host species are tolerant to introduced parasites, this could amplify the risk of the parasite to vulnerable host species. Recently, the introduced parasitic nest fly Philornis downsi has been implicated in the decline of Darwin’s finch populations in the Galápagos Islands. In some years, 100% of finch nests fail due to P. downsi; however, other common host species nesting near Darwin’s finches, such as the endemic Galápagos mockingbird (Mimus parvulus), appear to be less affected by P. downsi. We compared effects of P. downsi on mockingbirds and medium ground finches (Geospiza fortis) on Santa Cruz Island in the Galápagos. We experimentally manipulated the abundance of P. downsi in nests of mockingbirds and finches to measure the direct effect of the parasite on the reproductive success of each species of host. We also compared immunological and behavioral responses by each species of host to the fly. Although nests of the two host species had similar parasite densities, flies decreased the fitness of finches but not mockingbirds. Neither host species had a significant antibody-mediated immune response to P. downsi. Moreover, finches showed no significant increase in begging, parental provisioning, or plasma glucose levels in response to the flies. In contrast, parasitized mockingbird nestlings begged more than nonparasitized mockingbird nestlings. Greater begging was correlated with increased parental provisioning behavior, which appeared to compensate for parasite damage. The results of our study suggest that finches are negatively affected by P. downsi because they do not have such behavioral mechanisms for energy compensation. In contrast, mockingbirds are capable of compensation, making them tolerant hosts, and a possible indirect threat to Darwin’s finches
