Adult Acquired Flatfoot Deformity: Anatomy, Biomechanics, Staging, and Imaging Findings.
Adult acquired flatfoot deformity (AAFD) is a common disorder that typically affects middle-aged and elderly women, resulting in foot pain, malalignment, and loss of function. The disorder is initiated most commonly by degeneration of the posterior tibialis tendon (PTT), which normally functions to maintain the talonavicular joint at the apex of the three arches of the foot. PTT degeneration encompasses tenosynovitis, tendinosis, tendon elongation, and tendon tearing. The malaligned foot is initially flexible but becomes rigid and constant as the disorder progresses. Tendon dysfunction commonly leads to secondary damage of the spring ligament and talocalcaneal ligaments and may be associated with injury to the deltoid ligament, plantar fascia, and other soft-tissue structures. Failure of multiple stabilizers appears to be necessary for development of the characteristic planovalgus deformity of AAFD, with a depressed plantar-flexed talus bone, hindfoot and/or midfoot valgus, and an everted flattened forefoot. AAFD also leads to gait dysfunction as the foot is unable to change shape and function adequately to accommodate the various phases of gait, which require multiple rapid transitions in foot position and tone for effective ambulation. The four-tier staging system for AAFD emphasizes physical examination findings and metrics of foot malalignment. Mild disease is managed conservatively, but surgical procedures directed at the soft tissues and/or bones become necessary and progressively more invasive as the disease progresses. Although much has been written about the imaging findings of AAFD, this article emphasizes the anatomy and function of the foot's stabilizing structures to help the radiologist better understand this disabling disorder. Yrast line for weakly interacting trapped bosons
We compute numerically the yrast line for harmonically trapped boson systems
with a weak repulsive contact interaction, studying the transition to a vortex
state as the angular momentum L increases and approaches N, the number of
bosons. The L=N eigenstate is indeed dominated by particles with unit angular
momentum, but the state has other significant components beyond the pure vortex
configuration. There is a smooth crossover between low and high L with no
indication of a quantum phase transition. Most strikingly, the energy and wave
function appear to be analytical functions of L over the entire range 2 < L <
N. We confirm the structure of low-L states proposed by Mottelson, as mainly
single-particle excitations with two or three units of angular momentum.Comment: 9 pages, 3 EPS-figures, uses psfig.st
Automated detection of parenchymal changes of ischemic stroke in non-contrast computer tomography: a fuzzy approach
The detection of ischemic changes is a primary task in the interpretation of brain Computer Tomography (CT) of patients suffering from neurological disorders. Although CT can easily show these lesions, their interpretation may be difficult when the lesion is not easily recognizable. The gold standard for the detection of acute stroke is highly variable and depends on the experience of physicians. This research proposes a new method of automatic detection of parenchymal changes of ischemic stroke in Non-Contrast CT. The method identifies non-pathological cases (94 cases, 40 training, 54 test) based on the analysis of cerebral symmetry. Parenchymal changes in cases with abnormalities (20 cases) are detected by means of a contralateral analysis of brain regions. In order to facilitate the evaluation of abnormal regions, non-pathological tissues in Hounsfield Units were characterized using fuzzy logic techniques. Cases of non-pathological and stroke patients were used to discard/confirm abnormality with a sensitivity (TPR) of 91% and specificity (SPC) of 100%. Abnormal regions were evaluated and the presence of parenchymal changes was detected with a TPR of 96% and SPC of 100%. The presence of parenchymal changes of ischemic stroke was detected by the identification of tissues using fuzzy logic techniques. Because of abnormal regions are identified, the expert can prioritize the examination to a previously delimited region, decreasing the diagnostic time. The identification of tissues allows a better visualization of the region to be evaluated, helping to discard or confirm a stroke.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
A fuzzy approach for feature extraction of brain tissues in Non-Contrast CT
In neuroimaging, brain tissue segmentation is a fundamental part of the techniques that seek to automate the detection of pathologies, the quantification of tissues or the evaluation of the progress of a treatment. Because of its wide availability, lower cost than other imaging techniques, fast execution and proven efficacy, Non-contrast Cerebral Computerized Tomography (NCCT) is the most used technique in emergency room for neuroradiology examination, however, most research on brain segmentation focuses on MRI due to the inherent difficulty of brain tissue segmentation in NCCT. In this work, three brain tissues were characterized: white matter, gray matter and cerebrospinal fluid in NCCT images. Feature extraction of these structures was made based on the radiological attenuation index denoted by the Hounsfield Units using fuzzy logic techniques. We evaluated the classification of each tissue in NCCT images and quantified the feature extraction technique in images from real tissues with a sensitivity of 92% and a specificity of 96% for images from cases with slice thickness of 1 mm, and 96% and 98% respectively for those of 1.5 mm, demonstrating the ability of the method as feature extractor of brain tissues.Postprint (published version
Vulneración de la Relación Laboral Mediante la vía Administrativa a Través del Visto Bueno
The "Visto Bueno", is a merely administrative act in which one of the parties expresses its desire to terminate the labor relationship for some of the causes established in article 172 and 173 of the Labor Code, articles which establish the legal causes for which an employer or worker can request the approval respectively. For this purpose and for a better understanding, we have developed research concerning the concept of the request for approval, the statute of limitations, the request for approval at the request of the employer and at the request of the employee, the legal grounds established in the Labor Code to proceed with the request, the content of the request for approval, the procedure and the challenge to the resolution issued by the Labor Inspector.

Heat release by controlled continuous-time Markov jump processes
We derive the equations governing the protocols minimizing the heat released
by a continuous-time Markov jump process on a one-dimensional countable state
space during a transition between assigned initial and final probability
distributions in a finite time horizon. In particular, we identify the
hypotheses on the transition rates under which the optimal control strategy and
the probability distribution of the Markov jump problem obey a system of
differential equations of Hamilton-Bellman-Jacobi-type. As the state-space mesh
tends to zero, these equations converge to those satisfied by the diffusion
process minimizing the heat released in the Langevin formulation of the same
problem. We also show that in full analogy with the continuum case, heat
minimization is equivalent to entropy production minimization. Thus, our
results may be interpreted as a refined version of the second law of
thermodynamics.Comment: final version, section 2.1 revised, 26 pages, 3 figure
