CHANG-ES VI: Probing Supernova Energy Deposition in Spiral Galaxies Through Multi-Wavelength Relationships
How a galaxy regulates its SNe energy into different
interstellar/circumgalactic medium components strongly affects galaxy
evolution. Based on the JVLA D-configuration C- (6 GHz) and L-band (1.6 GHz)
continuum observations, we perform statistical analysis comparing
multi-wavelength properties of the CHANG-ES galaxies. The high-quality JVLA
data and edge-on orientation enable us for the first time to include the halo
into the energy budget for a complete radio-flux-limited sample. We find tight
correlations of with the mid-IR-based SFR. The normalization of
our relation is 2-3 times of
those obtained for face-on galaxies, probably a result of enhanced IR
extinction at high inclination. We also find tight correlations between and the SNe energy injection rate , indicating
the energy loss via synchrotron radio continuum accounts for of
, comparable to the energy contained in CR electrons. The
integrated C-to-L-band spectral index is for non-AGN
galaxies, indicating a dominance by the diffuse synchrotron component. The
low-scatter /
relationships have super-linear logarithmic slopes at in L-band
(/) while consistent with linear in C-band
(/). The super-linearity could be naturally
reproduced with non-calorimeter models for galaxy disks. Using Chandra halo
X-ray measurements, we find sub-linear relations.
These results indicate that the observed radio halo of a starburst galaxy is
close to electron calorimeter, and a galaxy with higher SFR tends to distribute

Star formation rates in Lyman break galaxies: radio stacking of LBGs in the COSMOS field and the sub-Jy radio source population
We present an analysis of the radio properties of large samples of Lyman
Break Galaxies (LBGs) at , 4, and 5 from the COSMOS field. The median
stacking analysis yields a statistical detection of the LBGs (U-band
drop-outs), with a 1.4 GHz flux density of Jy. The stacked
emission is unresolved, with a size , or a physical size kpc. The
total star formation rate implied by this radio luminosity is
year, based on the radio-FIR correlation in low redshift star
forming galaxies. The star formation rate derived from a similar analysis of
the UV luminosities is 17 year, without any correction for UV
dust attenuation. The simplest conclusion is that the dust attenuation factor
is 1.8 at UV wavelengths. However, this factor is considerably smaller than the
standard attenuation factor , normally assumed for LBGs. We discuss
potential reasons for this discrepancy, including the possibility that the dust
attenuation factor at is smaller than at lower redshifts. Conversely,
the radio luminosity for a given star formation rate may be systematically
lower at very high redshift. Two possible causes for a suppressed radio
luminosity are: (i) increased inverse Compton cooling of the relativistic
electron population due to scattering off the increasing CMB at high redshift,
or (ii) cosmic ray diffusion from systematically smaller galaxies. The radio
detections of individual sources are consistent with a radio-loud AGN fraction
of 0.3%. One source is identified as a very dusty, extreme starburst galaxy (a

Group cognitive behavioural therapy for stroke survivors with depression and their carers
Background: Depression in stroke survivors is common, leads to poorer outcomes and often not treated. A group cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) program (Brainstorm) for stroke survivors with depression, and their carers has been running as part of usual care since 2007.
Objective: To evaluate the implementation and acceptability of Brainstorm, a closed group intervention consisting of up to 10 sessions of education, activity planning, problem solving and thought challenging.
Methods: Participating stroke survivors and their carers complete assessment measures at baseline, post-treatment and 1-month and 6-months follow-up. A mixed models for repeated measures data was conducted with depression and anxiety scores for stroke survivors (Beck Depression Inventory-II; Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) and the assessment of depression, anxiety and carer burden for carers. Acceptability was assessed by session attendance and written and open participant feedback upon completion of the program.
Results: Forty-eight community dwelling stroke survivors and 34 carers attended Brainstorm, with a median attendance of 88% of sessions. Follow-up assessments were completed by 77% (post-treatment), 46% (1-month) and 38% (6-month) of stroke survivors. Stroke survivors’ depression scores decreased from baseline to post-treatment (p<.001); maintained at 1-month (p<.001) but not at 6-month (p=.056). Anxiety scores decreased between baseline and 1-month (p=.013). Carer burden, depression and anxiety scores at 1-month and 6-month follow-up, for carers, were all reduced when compared with baseline (p<.05).
Conclusion: The Brainstorm group intervention for depression in stroke survivors appears to have been effectively implemented and is acceptable to stroke survivors and carers
Continuum Halos in Nearby Galaxies -- an EVLA Survey (CHANG-ES) -- II: First Results on NGC 4631
We present the first results from the CHANG-ES survey, a new survey of 35
edge-on galaxies to search for both in-disk as well as extra-planar radio
continuum emission. The motivation and science case for the survey are
presented in a companion paper (Paper I). In this paper (Paper II), we outline
the observations and data reduction steps required for wide-band calibration
and mapping of EVLA data, including polarization, based on C-array test
observations of NGC 4631.
With modest on-source observing times (30 minutes at 1.5 GHz and 75 minutes
at 6 GHz for the test data) we have achieved best rms noise levels of 22 and
3.5 Jy beam at 1.5 GHz and 6 GHz, respectively. New disk-halo
features have been detected, among them two at 1.5 GHz that appear as loops in
projection. We present the first 1.5 GHz spectral index map of NGC 4631 to be
formed from a single wide-band observation in a single array configuration.
This map represents tangent slopes to the intensities within the band centered
at 1.5 GHz, rather than fits across widely separated frequencies as has been
done in the past and is also the highest spatial resolution spectral index map
yet presented for this galaxy. The average spectral index in the disk is
indicating that the emission is
largely non-thermal, but a small global thermal contribution is sufficient to
explain a positive curvature term in the spectral index over the band. Two
specific star forming regions have spectral indices that are consistent with
thermal emission. Polarization results (uncorrected for internal Faraday
rotation) are consistent with previous observations and also reveal some new
features. On broad scales, we find strong support for the notion that magnetic

The scale of population structure in Arabidopsis thaliana
The population structure of an organism reflects its evolutionary history and influences its evolutionary trajectory. It constrains the combination of genetic diversity and reveals patterns of past gene flow. Understanding it is a prerequisite for detecting genomic regions under selection, predicting the effect of population disturbances, or modeling gene flow. This paper examines the detailed global population structure of Arabidopsis thaliana. Using a set of 5,707 plants collected from around the globe and genotyped at 149 SNPs, we show that while A. thaliana as a species self-fertilizes 97% of the time, there is considerable variation among local groups. This level of outcrossing greatly limits observed heterozygosity but is sufficient to generate considerable local haplotypic diversity. We also find that in its native Eurasian range A. thaliana exhibits continuous isolation by distance at every geographic scale without natural breaks corresponding to classical notions of populations. By contrast, in North America, where it exists as an exotic species, A. thaliana exhibits little or no population structure at a continental scale but local isolation by distance that extends hundreds of km. This suggests a pattern for the development of isolation by distance that can establish itself shortly after an organism fills a new habitat range. It also raises questions about the general applicability of many standard population genetics models. Any model based on discrete clusters of interchangeable individuals will be an uneasy fit to organisms like A. thaliana which exhibit continuous isolation by distance on many scales
Continuum Halos in Nearby Galaxies -- an EVLA Survey (CHANG-ES) -- I: Introduction to the Survey
We introduce a new survey to map the radio continuum halos of a sample of 35
edge-on spiral galaxies at 1.5 GHz and 6 GHz in all polarization products. The
survey is exploiting the new wide bandwidth capabilities of the Karl G. Jansky
Very Large Array (i.e. the Expanded Very Large Array, or EVLA) in a variety of
array configurations (B, C, and D) in order to compile the most comprehensive
data set yet obtained for the study of radio halo properties. This is the first
survey of radio halos to include all polarization products.
In this first paper, we outline the scientific motivation of the survey, the
specific science goals, and the expected improvements in noise levels and
spatial coverage from the survey. Our goals include investigating the physical
conditions and origin of halos, characterizing cosmic ray transport and wind
speed, measuring Faraday rotation and mapping the magnetic field, probing the
in-disk and extraplanar far-infrared - radio continuum relation, and
reconciling non-thermal radio emission with high-energy gamma-ray models. The
sample size allows us to search for correlations between radio halos and other
properties, including environment, star formation rate, and the presence of
AGNs. In a companion paper (Paper II) we outline the data reduction steps and

Increase of Direct C-C Coupling Reaction Yield by Identifying Structural and Electronic Properties of High-Spin Iron Tetra-azamacrocyclic Complexes
Macrocyclic ligands have been explored extensively as scaffolds for transition metal catalysts for oxygen and hydrogen atom transfer reactions. C–C reactions facilitated using earth abundant metals bound to macrocyclic ligands have not been well-understood but could be a green alternative to replacing the current expensive and toxic precious metal systems most commonly used for these processes. Therefore, the yields from direct Suzuki–Miyaura C–C coupling of phenylboronic acid and pyrrole to produce 2-phenylpyrrole facilitated by eight high-spin iron complexes ([Fe3+L1(Cl)2]+, [Fe3+L4(Cl)2]+, [Fe2+L5(Cl)]+, [Fe2+L6(Cl)2], [Fe3+L7(Cl)2]+, [Fe3+L8(Cl)2]+, [Fe2+L9(Cl)]+, and [Fe2+L10(Cl)]+) were compared to identify the effect of structural and electronic properties on catalytic efficiency. Specifically, catalyst complexes were compared to evaluate the effect of five properties on catalyst reaction yields: (1) the coordination requirements of the catalyst, (2) redox half-potential of each complex, (3) topological constraint/rigidity, (4) N atom modification(s) increasing oxidative stability of the complex, and (5) geometric parameters. The need for two labile cis-coordination sites was confirmed based on a 42% decrease in catalytic reaction yield observed when complexes containing pentadentate ligands were used in place of complexes with tetradentate ligands. A strong correlation between iron(III/II) redox potential and catalytic reaction yields was also observed, with [Fe2+L6(Cl)2] providing the highest yield (81%, −405 mV). A Lorentzian fitting of redox potential versus yields predicts that these catalysts can undergo more fine-tuning to further increase yields. Interestingly, the remaining properties explored did not show a direct, strong relationship to catalytic reaction yields. Altogether, these results show that modifications to the ligand scaffold using fundamental concepts of inorganic coordination chemistry can be used to control the catalytic activity of macrocyclic iron complexes by controlling redox chemistry of the iron center. Furthermore, the data provide direction for the design of improved catalysts for this reaction and strategies to understand the impact of a ligand scaffold on catalytic activity of other reactions
Chaste: an open source C++ library for computational physiology and biology
Chaste - Cancer, Heart And Soft Tissue Environment - is an open source C++ library for the computational simulation of mathematical models developed for physiology and biology. Code development has been driven by two initial applications: cardiac electrophysiology and cancer development. A large number of cardiac electrophysiology studies have been enabled and performed, including high performance computational investigations of defibrillation on realistic human cardiac geometries. New models for the initiation and growth of tumours have been developed. In particular, cell-based simulations have provided novel insight into the role of stem cells in the colorectal crypt. Chaste is constantly evolving and is now being applied to a far wider range of problems. The code provides modules for handling common scientific computing components, such as meshes and solvers for ordinary and partial differential equations (ODEs/PDEs). Re-use of these components avoids the need for researchers to "re-invent the wheel" with each new project, accelerating the rate of progress in new applications. Chaste is developed using industrially-derived techniques, in particular test-driven development, to ensure code quality, re-use and reliability. In this article we provide examples that illustrate the types of problems Chaste can be used to solve, which can be run on a desktop computer. We highlight some scientific studies that have used or are using Chaste, and the insights they have provided. The source code, both for specific releases and the development version, is available to download under an open source Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) licence at http://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/chaste, together with details of a mailing list and links to documentation and tutorials
Small-molecule inhibition of a depalmitoylase enhances Toxoplasma host-cell invasion.
Although there have been numerous advances in our understanding of how apicomplexan parasites such as Toxoplasma gondii enter host cells, many of the signaling pathways and enzymes involved in the organization of invasion mediators remain poorly defined. We recently performed a forward chemical-genetic screen in T. gondii and identified compounds that markedly enhanced infectivity. Although molecular dissection of invasion has benefited from the use of small-molecule inhibitors, the mechanisms underlying induction of invasion by small-molecule enhancers have never been described. Here we identify the Toxoplasma ortholog of human APT1, palmitoyl protein thioesterase-1 (TgPPT1), as the target of one class of small-molecule enhancers. Inhibition of this uncharacterized thioesterase triggered secretion of invasion-associated organelles, increased motility and enhanced the invasive capacity of tachyzoites. We demonstrate that TgPPT1 is a bona fide depalmitoylase, thereby establishing an important role for dynamic and reversible palmitoylation in host-cell invasion by T. gondii
Requirements for Efficient Proteolytic Cleavage of Prelamin A by ZMPSTE24
The proteolytic maturation of the nuclear protein lamin A by the zinc metalloprotease ZMPSTE24 is critical for human health. The lamin A precursor, prelamin A, undergoes a multi-step maturation process that includes CAAX processing (farnesylation, proteolysis and carboxylmethylation of the C-terminal CAAX motif), followed by ZMPSTE24-mediated cleavage of the last 15 amino acids, including the modified C-terminus. Failure to cleave the prelamin A "tail", due to mutations in either prelamin A or ZMPSTE24, results in a permanently prenylated form of prelamin A that underlies the premature aging disease Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS) and related progeroid disorders.Here we have investigated the features of the prelamin A substrate that are required for efficient cleavage by ZMPSTE24. We find that the C-terminal 41 amino acids of prelamin A contain sufficient context to allow cleavage of the tail by ZMPSTE24. We have identified several mutations in amino acids immediately surrounding the cleavage site (between Y646 and L647) that interfere with efficient cleavage of the prelamin A tail; these mutations include R644C, L648A and N650A, in addition to the previously reported L647R. Our data suggests that 9 of the 15 residues within the cleaved tail that lie immediately upstream of the CAAX motif are not critical for ZMPSTE24-mediated cleavage, as they can be replaced by the 9 amino acid HA epitope. However, duplication of the same 9 amino acids (to increase the distance between the prenyl group and the cleavage site) impairs the ability of ZMPSTE24 to cleave prelamin A.Our data reveals amino acid preferences flanking the ZMPSTE24 cleavage site of prelamin A and suggests that spacing from the farnesyl-cysteine to the cleavage site is important for optimal ZMPSTE24 cleavage.
