Successful strategies in drama translation: Yasmina Reza’s “Art”

Yasmina Reza’s “Art” has been widely acclaimed ever since it opened in Paris in 1994: the different productions which have followed the French original in more than 40 countries have enjoyed equal success. This success, both among audiences and critics, may be attributed to the play’s universal themes, to the tone and richness of its dialogue and to the good acting most productions have displayed. But the fact that the play has been appreciated in so many different countries and languages inevitably implies that translation is also at the centre of its success. This paper analyses two translations of “Art” – Christopher Hampton’s English text and Josep M. Flotats’s version into Spanish –, which, despite having a similar aim, i.e., making the play function on stage, have followed different translation strategies to make it work in their different target contexts.« Art », de Yasmina Reza, a reçu un accueil extraordinaire dans le monde entier depuis sa représentation à Paris en 1994 : les différentes productions qui ont fait suite à la mise en scène originale dans plus de quarante pays ont atteint un succès semblable. Une telle réussite, aussi bien parmi les publics les plus divers que chez les critiques dramatiques, peut être attribuée aux thèmes universaux dont s’occupe la pièce, au ton et la richesse du dialogue, ainsi qu’au jeu excellent dont ont fait preuve la majorité des mises en scène. Mais le fait que la pièce ait été appréciée dans des pays et des langues si différentes implique, inévitablement, que la traduction joue également un rôle central dans un accueil si réussi. Dans l’article présent sont analysées deux traductions d’« Art » – le texte anglais de Christopher Hampton et la version espagnole de Josep M. Flotats –, lesquelles, bien qu’ayant été conçues dans un même but, à savoir, que la pièce puisse être jouée sur scène, révèlent différentes stratégies en matière de traduction afin qu’elle marche bien dans les divers contextes auxquels elle s’adresse

Sunset Boulevard in Spanish Performance: Translations on the Musical Stage

This article focuses on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Sunset Boulevard (1993), in order to present some relevant aspects of the production and reception of musicals both in an original and a target context. The study will first describe the eventful creative process of this musical text in its Anglophone source contexts, and will then move on to examine it from the perspective of its performance in Spanish translation. Recently translated for a Spanish-language production staged in Tenerife in 2017 (soon followed by another one in Argentina in 2018), Sunset Boulevard is a good example of the powerful impact that the importation of Anglo-American musicals has had in Spain in recent decades (see Mateo 2008) while it also serves to illustrate interesting aspects of the evolution and current situation of musicals’ production in this country. This macro-level study will therefore examine Lloyd Webber’s musical performed in sung translation, addressing it from a contextual standpoint and with a focus in Spain, with the aim of contributing to a deeper knowledge of theatre translation when it involves musical plays

Massive black holes in stellar systems: 'quiescent' accretion and luminosity

Only a small fraction of local galaxies harbor an accreting black hole, classified as an active galactic nucleus (AGN). However, many stellar systems are plausibly expected to host black holes, from globular clusters to nuclear star clusters, to massive galaxies. The mere presence of stars in the vicinity of a black hole provides a source of fuel via mass loss of evolved stars. In this paper we assess the expected luminosities of black holes embedded in stellar systems of different sizes and properties, spanning a large range of masses. We model the distribution of stars and derive the amount of gas available to a central black hole through a geometrical model. We estimate the luminosity of the black holes under simple, but physically grounded, assumptions on the accretion flow. Finally we discuss the detectability of 'quiescent' black holes in the local Universe.Comment: ApJ in pres

L'article presenta els principals resultats d'una recerca que analitza, des de la perspectiva econòmica i financera, la producció d'informatius a la televisió. L'objectiu de la recerca era el d'analitzar quin tipus d'informació s'ofereix, i per a quin públic, a les televisions amb més consum a Catalunya -TVC, TVE, Telecinco i Antena 3 TV- i com es produeixen aquests continguts informatius. Per això, s'analitza la posició de la producció informativa en l'estructura organitzativa de les empreses, l'oferta de continguts informatius i la quantitat i el perfil de la demanda que generen. S'analitza també quins són els factors de producció i els costos en la producció informativa, i com es comercialitzen, per tal de valorar els factors econòmics i financers que condicionen el tipus d'informació que podem rebre per mitjà de la televisi

Influencia de la conciliación familiar en el estrés laboral

Para la realización del siguiente proyecto me he basado, principalmente, en una revisión legislativa para conocer las leyes que afectan directamente al estrés y la conciliación. Para ellos, se ha revisado la normativa estatal y europea. Posteriormente, se ha procedido a explicar y desarrollar el tema bajo modelos teóricos y encuestas reales y actuales a la población. La comparativa del bloque II que se desarrolla en el punto 2.3 “Influencia entre ambas variables: estrés y conciliación” se ha llevado a cabo tomando en cuenta casos reales y publicados en nuestro país. Estos datos se han recogido a través de noticias y sentencias publicadas y cuya verificación de los hechos está comprobada.Grado en Administración y Dirección de Empresa

Estudio sobre la estimación de cantidades continuas: longitud y superficie

En un estudio previo sobre estimación de cantidades continuas (Castillo, 2006), en el caso de las magnitudes longitud, superficie, capacidad y masa se detectaron importantes deficiencias en la capacidad estimativa de los alumnos de secundaria. Estos nos han conducido a realizar una investigación de diseño dirigida a analizar cómo un grupo de alumnos de 3º de E.S.O. desarrolla su capacidad de estimación de las magnitudes longitud y superficie, a lo largo de un proceso de enseñanza en el que atendemos a las diferentes componentes de la estimación. En esta comunicación describimos la estructura de dicho estudio y presentamos los primeros resultados

Categorización de errores en la estimación de cantidades de longitud y superficie

En una investigación de diseño en curso sobre estimación de cantidades continuas (longitud y superficie), se han detectado importantes deficiencias en la capacidad estimativa de alumnos de 3º de E.S.O. Se ha elaborado una categorización de los errores cometidos en la realización de tareas estimativas que permite analizar el efecto, del proceso de enseñanza implementado en la capacidad estimativa de los alumnos, y la vinculación del tipo de error con la magnitud a estimar

Plan de Relaciones Públicas hotel El reloj de los sueños

El Trabajo de Fin de Grado es un plan de relaciones públicas para el hotel El Reloj de los Sueños, situado en el casco histórico de Calatayud y el cual abrirá sus puertas en 2018. Para desarrollar el proyecto, se analizó a la empresa, sus competidores y a los públicos objetivo. Se estableció la meta del proyecto y tres objetivos a cumplir mediante tres estrategias, que posteriormente serán evaluados y controlados. El plan se realizará de marzo de 2018 a enero de 2019 con un presupuesto máximo de 8.000€

Prospects on end of life electric vehicle batteries through 2050 in Catalonia

Although the amount of these batteries reaching their end of life is presently negligible, studies to quantify their flows and stocks will progressively gain importance as they have a high potential for reuse and contain some economic valuable materials. This study aims at forecasting the number of batteries due to be collected yearly from 2020 to 2050 in Catalonia (Northeast Spain). Product flow analyses are developed considering two different future electric vehicle sales, and two lifespan scenarios for batteries, assuming they follow a Weibull lifetime probability distribution. The volume of batteries reaching their first-use end of life will not reach significance until 2050, however strategies to optimise their use can be placed earlier to get prepared to the coming influxes. If future electric vehicle sales are to meet the Spanish Climate Change Law, influxes of batteries can increase up to 25-fold in 2030 and 72-fold in 2040. Under the extended battery service scenarios, the storage capacity is estimated to be 4 to 5 times larger than in scenarios where batteries are recycled earlier. The potential supply of secondary materials from end of life batteries will increase up to 80% of cobalt, copper and nickel, and 60% of lithium in 2050. The results urge to place proper management strategies for batteries in the coming years to help optimising their use and their potential recovery
