Noroviruses affect the stomach and intestines and are easily transmissible through human contact or in enclosed spaces, which would explain why they appear relatively frequently during cruise trips. This group of viruses stands out for its ability to resist good hygiene habits or extreme environments and is one of the main causes of gastrointestinal diseases. The following article presents a comparative study of the index of Salmonella and norovirus cases in Catalonia over a twelve month period. The results show that there is a higher incidence of norovirus attacks and a clear predisposition to cause epidemics when compared to other infectious agencies. Researchers thus propose establishing more exhaustive hygiene measures and that special attention be given to those who always suffer the most: the elderly and children

Degradation of azo dyes by rapidly solidified metallic particles

Azo compounds are one of the most common families of dyes used in textile and leather treatments. An important step during the treatment of water polluted by these compounds, is the degradation of the compounds by decomposition of the -N=N- bonds, producing the de-colorization of the water. This de-colorization reaction can be activated by the presence of zero valent metallic particles. The metastable structures generated during rapid solidification tend to increase the chemical activity of the alloys. Recently, it has been discovered that the use of metallic particles in a metastable phase (amorphous or nanocrystalline) multiplies significantly the efficiency of the decolorization water-treatment step. Here we present the results obtained in the decolorization of water using alloys based on different metals (Fe, Mn, Ni and Al) produced by rapid solidification and posterior ball milling. For some Al-containing alloys the results show a fast reaction, even in neutral pH conditions. In this work, the efficiency of the different metastable alloys in the de-colorization process, the effects of the metastable structure and the processing conditions are presented and assessed.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Genetic reanalysis of patients with a difference of sex development carrying the NR5A1/SF-1 variant p.Gly146Ala has discovered other likely disease-causing variations

Sexual differentiation; Genital anatomy; PhenotypesDiferenciación sexual; Anatomía de los genitales; FenotiposDiferenciació sexual; Anatomia dels genitals; FenotipsNR5A1/SF-1 (Steroidogenic factor-1) variants may cause mild to severe differences of sex development (DSD) or may be found in healthy carriers. The NR5A1/SF-1 c.437G>C/p.Gly146Ala variant is common in individuals with a DSD and has been suggested to act as a susceptibility factor for adrenal disease or cryptorchidism. Since the allele frequency is high in the general population, and the functional testing of the p.Gly146Ala variant revealed inconclusive results, the disease-causing effect of this variant has been questioned. However, a role as a disease modifier is still possible given that oligogenic inheritance has been described in patients with NR5A1/SF-1 variants. Therefore, we performed next generation sequencing (NGS) in 13 DSD individuals harboring the NR5A1/SF-1 p.Gly146Ala variant to search for other DSD-causing variants and clarify the function of this variant for the phenotype of the carriers. Panel and whole-exome sequencing was performed, and data were analyzed with a filtering algorithm for detecting variants in NR5A1- and DSD-related genes. The phenotype of the studied individuals ranged from scrotal hypospadias and ambiguous genitalia in 46,XY DSD to opposite sex in both 46,XY and 46,XX. In nine subjects we identified either a clearly pathogenic DSD gene variant (e.g. in AR) or one to four potentially deleterious variants that likely explain the observed phenotype alone (e.g. in FGFR3, CHD7). Our study shows that most individuals carrying the NR5A1/SF-1 p.Gly146Ala variant, harbor at least one other deleterious gene variant which can explain the DSD phenotype. This finding confirms that the NR5A1/SF-1 p.Gly146Ala variant may not contribute to the pathogenesis of DSD and qualifies as a benign polymorphism. Thus, individuals, in whom the NR5A1/SF-1 p.Gly146Ala gene variant has been identified as the underlying genetic cause for their DSD in the past, should be re-evaluated with a NGS method to reveal the real genetic diagnosis.: This work has been supported by the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU) (Spain) (IT1739-22) and by the Swiss National Science Foundation (320030-197725). Hepatitis A Outbreak Characteristics: A Comparison of Regions with Different Vaccination Strategies, Spain 2010-2018

    Get PDF
We compared the cumulative incidence and characteristics of hepatitis A outbreaks in two groups of Spanish autonomous regions according to whether a universal or risk group vaccination strategy was followed. Outbreaks between 2010 and 2018 were analyzed. The cumulative incidence rate of outbreaks was estimated and compared by estimating the rate ratio (RR). The characteristics of the outbreaks and those of the first cases were compared. Adjusted OR (aOR) were calculated using a multivariate logistic regression model. Outbreak incidence was 16.04 per million persons in regions with universal vaccination and 20.76 in those with risk-group vaccination (RR 0.77; 95%CI 0.62-0.94). Imported outbreaks accounted for 65% in regions with universal vaccination and 28.7% in regions with risk-group vaccination (aOR 3.88; 95%CI 2.13-7.09). Adolescents and young adults aged 15-44 years and men who have sex with men were less frequently the first case of the outbreak in regions with a universal vaccination strategy (aOR 0.54; 95%CI 0.32-0.92 and 0.23; 95%CI 0.07-0.82, respectively). The cumulative incidence rate of outbreaks was lower in regions with universal vaccination. In all regions, independently of the vaccination strategy, activities to vaccinate persons belonging to high-risk groups for infection should be emphasized. This study was funded by the Programme of Prevention, Surveillance, and Control of Transmissible Diseases (PREVICET), CIBER de Epidemiología y Salud Pública (CIBERESP), Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Madrid (Grant number ESPC07/2021).S

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with poorer satisfaction with diabetes-related treatment and quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND: In this cross-sectional study, we assessed the possible association of vitamin D deficiency with self-reported treatment satisfaction and health-related quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: We performed a sub-analysis of a previous study and included a total of 292 type 2 diabetic patients. We evaluated treatment satisfaction and health-related quality of life through specific tools: the Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire and the Audit of Diabetes-Dependent Quality of Life. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as 25 (OH) D serum levels < 15 ng/mL. RESULTS: Multivariable linear regression models were used to estimate the relationship of vitamin D deficiency with both outcomes once adjusted for self-reported patient characteristics. Vitamin D deficiency was significantly associated with the final score of the Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire and the single 'diabetes-specific quality of life' dimension of the Audit of Diabetes-Dependent Quality of Life (p = 0.0198 and p = 0.0070, respectively). However, lower concentrations of 25-OH vitamin D were not associated with the overall quality of life score or the perceived frequency of hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows the association between vitamin D deficiency and both the self-reported diabetes treatment satisfaction and the diabetes-specific quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes
