The Plight Of The Beautiful People: Sexuality And Death In Less Than Zero And The Doom Generation

    Get PDF
This essay analyzes how the films Less Than Zero and The Doom Generation intersect with their overlapping themes regarding sex, sexuality, and death. The intended goal of the readings in this essay is to examine how queerness was represented in film during the AIDS crisis, specifically through the feature of a sexually fluid trio of friends. It first identifies the common elements of both films, including the gender makeup of the friend group, ambiguous or unrealized queerness, the role of the car in sexual desire, and themes of death and demise. The essay then considers the context of the AIDS crisis and 80s conservatism, Lacanian ethics, and queer theory to dissect how these elements and themes are explored in opposing ways. My central argument then is that Less Than Zero uses these narrative elements in problematic ways to condemn its queer character and, subsequently, queer audiences, while The Doom Generation uses these elements to offer a more respectful and sympathetic view of its queer characters and audiences. This essay stands as another example of queer analysis conducted by a queer researcher to place both Less Than Zero and The Doom Generation in a unique conversation with one another as similar, though ultimately opposing films

Objective: The goal of this study was to examine pain responses in pediatric patients with cancer. Method: Children (ages 6 to 18) undergoing treatment for cancer (N=68) completed the cold pressor task. Results: Average pain tolerance was 118.22 seconds (SD=101.18) and 40% of the children kept their hand in the water the entire 4-minute ceiling. On a 0 to 10 numeric rating scale, children reported a pain severity of 5.07 (SD=3.47) at their first report of pain, a pain severity of 5.94 (SD=3.54) at their maximum report of pain, and a pain severity of 5.33 (SD=3.72) at the time they reached pain tolerance. Children receiving chemotherapy agents (N=56) with possible neuropathic effects exhibited higher pain tolerance compared with children not receiving such treatments (N=10), β=0.84, SE=0.38, Wald χ21=4.88, P=0.027, hazard ratio=2.33, 95% confidence interval (1.10-4.92). Conclusions: This study provides data on experimental pain responses in a sample of children undergoing cancer treatment and suggests that pain experience may be moderated by cancer treatment type

NSMCE2 suppresses cancer and aging in mice independently of its SUMO ligase activity.

The SMC5/6 complex is the least understood of SMC complexes. In yeast, smc5/6 mutants phenocopy mutations in sgs1, the BLM ortholog that is deficient in Bloom's syndrome (BS). We here show that NSMCE2 (Mms21, in Saccharomyces cerevisiae), an essential SUMO ligase of the SMC5/6 complex, suppresses cancer and aging in mice. Surprisingly, a mutation that compromises NSMCE2-dependent SUMOylation does not have a detectable impact on murine lifespan. In contrast, NSMCE2 deletion in adult mice leads to pathologies resembling those found in patients of BS. Moreover, and whereas NSMCE2 deletion does not have a detectable impact on DNA replication, NSMCE2-deficient cells also present the cellular hallmarks of BS such as increased recombination rates and an accumulation of micronuclei. Despite the similarities, NSMCE2 and BLM foci do not colocalize and concomitant deletion of Blm and Nsmce2 in B lymphocytes further increases recombination rates and is synthetic lethal due to severe chromosome mis-segregation. Our work reveals that SUMO- and BLM-independent activities of NSMCE2 limit recombination and facilitate segregation; functions of the SMC5/6 complex that are necessary to prevent cancer and aging in mice. The authors want to thank Jordi Torres and Mark O'Driscoll for comments on the manuscript. We report the fully-scalable fabrication of a large array of hybrid molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) -silicon dioxide (SiO2) one-dimensional, free-standing photonic-crystal cavities capable of enhancement of the MoS2 photoluminescence at the narrow cavity resonance. We demonstrate continuous tunability of the cavity resonance wavelength across the entire emission band of MoS2 simply by variation of the photonic crystal periodicity. Device fabrication started by substrate-scale growth of MoS2 using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on non-birefringent thermal oxide on a silicon wafer;it was followed by lithographic fabrication of a photonic crystal nanocavity array on the same substrate at more than 50% yield of functional devices. Our cavities exhibit three dominant modes with measured linewidths less than 0.2 nm, corresponding to quality factors exceeding 4000. All experimental findings are found to be in excellent agreement with finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations. CVD MoS2 provides scalable access to a direct band gap, inorganic, stable and efficient emitter material for onchip photonics without the need for epitaxy and is at CMOS compatible processing parameters even for back-end-of-line integration;our findings suggest feasibility of cavity based line-narrowing in MoS2-based on-chip devices as it is required for instance for frequency-multiplexed operation in on-chip optical communication and sensing

    Get PDF
Capítulo I Aspectos Teóricos Metodológicos.

El autor es alumno egresado del Doctorado en Ciencias de la Salud becario de CONACYTIntroduction: Perceived self-efficacy is closely related to an adequate quality of life en general well-being of people, but few studies have studied this relationship in people with hemophilia. Objective: To determine the degree of relationship between perceived self-efficacy for weight control and quality of life in people with and without hemophilia, comparing both variables in case-control groups. Methods: The sample made up, for convenience, of 40 participants, with two matched groups. The group of cases consisted of 20 males between 19 and 24 years of age (M = 19.50, SD = 1.47) with hemophilia type A. The control group consisted of 20 males who did not present hemophilia, matched in age and weight status, between the ages of 18 and 24 years of age (M= 19.59, SD= 1.44). Participants answered the “Self-efficacy for Weight Control” questionnaire and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Bref” questionnaire. Descriptive statistics where used to describe the factors of each instrument. Student's t-test was used to compare differences between the two groups. Results: Only the Daily physical activity dimension showed a statistical difference in the control group. According to the Pearson correlation, a positive correlation was found between the Scheduled physical activity, Daily physical activity and Physical health dimensions. Conclusions: It is concluded that physical exercise, weight control, nutritional counseling and psychological support are essential for the quality of life, especially for people with hemophilia, which complements medical treatmentEl autor es alumno egresado del Doctorado en Ciencias de la Salud becario de CONACY

Testbeds for Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Photonics: Efficacy of Light Emission Enhancement in Monomer vs. Dimer Nanoscale Antennae

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are uniquely-qualified materials for photonics because they combine well defined tunable direct band gaps and selfpassivated surfaces without dangling bonds. However, the atomic thickness of these 2D materials results in low photo absorption limiting the achievable photo luminescence intensity. Such emission can, in principle, be enhanced via nanoscale antennae resulting in; a. an increased absorption cross-section enhancing pump efficiency, b. an acceleration of the internal emission rate via the Purcell factor mainly by reducing the antennas optical mode volume beyond the diffraction limit, and c. improved impedance matching of the emitter dipole to the freespace wavelength. Plasmonic dimer antennae show orders of magnitude hot-spot field enhancements when an emitter is positioned exactly at the midgap. However, a 2D material cannot be grown, or easily transferred, to reside in mid-gap of the metallic dimer cavity. In addition, a spacer layer between the cavity and the emissive material is required to avoid non-radiative recombination channels. Using both computational and experimental methods, in this work we show that the emission enhancement from a 2D emitter- monomer antenna cavity system rivals that of dimers at much reduced lithographic effort. We rationalize this finding by showing that the emission enhancement in dimer antennae does not specifically originate from the gap of the dimer cavity, but is an average effect originating from the effective cavity crosssection taken below each optical cavity where the emitting 2D film is located. In particular, we test an array of different dimer and monomer antenna geometries and observe a representative 3x higher emission for both monomer and dimer cavities as compared to intrinsic emission of Chemical Vapor Deposition synthesized WS2 flakes.Comment: 31 pages, 5 figure
