Rewriting the Salem Witchcraft Trials in Contemporary Popular Literature

The Salem Witchcraft Trials (1692) have received a lot of attention from history and literature, although there are very few critical analysis of how this historical event has entered the literary field. Many works of historical fiction – considered the most suitable literary genre to talk about an historical event - have used it in their storylines; however, popular genres such as romance, crime fiction, fantasy and science fiction have also shown an interest in this witch hunt. The main reason for this interest can be found in the lack of final conclusions as regards what really happened in Salem. The main objective of this paper is to show how what happened in Salem has entered contemporary popular fiction with the aim of showing the interest that it still arises and to vindicate the production of more critical works about the literary construction of one of the events that most dramatically has affected the configuration of the American mind.Los procesos por brujería que tuvieron lugar en Salem (Massachusetts) en el año 1692 han sido objeto de gran interés por parte de los historiadores y de los autores de ficción, aunque no suceda lo mismo en la literatura crítica sobre su presencia en el ámbito literario. Muchas novelas históricas han utilizado este acontecimiento histórico como parte de sus argumentos. Pero no solamente la ficción histórica más canónica se ha ocupado de esta famosa caza de brujas; géneros populares como la novela romántica, la fantasía, la ciencia ficción y la novela de detectives han creado versiones literarias de la caza de brujas de Salem debido en gran parte a la falta de acuerdo sobre lo que realmente sucedió en Salem. El objetivo del presente artículo es mostrar cómo este acontecimiento histórico se ha introducido en la literatura popular actual con el fin de mostrar el interés que aún hoy en día sigue despertando y reivindicar la elaboración de más estudios centrados en la construcción literaria de uno de los acontecimientos históricos que más huella ha dejado en la mentalidad norteamericana

A Low-Complexity and Asymptotically Optimal Coding Strategy for Gaussian Vector Sources

In this paper, we present a low-complexity coding strategy to encode (compress) finite-length data blocks of Gaussian vector sources. We show that for large enough data blocks of a Gaussian asymptotically wide sense stationary (AWSS) vector source, the rate of the coding strategy tends to the lowest possible rate. Besides being a low-complexity strategy it does not require the knowledge of the correlation matrix of such data blocks. We also show that this coding strategy is appropriate to encode the most relevant Gaussian vector sources, namely, wide sense stationary (WSS), moving average (MA), autoregressive (AR), and ARMA vector sources

In this paper, we study the asymptotic optimality of a low-complexity coding strategy for Gaussian vector sources. Specifically, we study the convergence speed of the rate of such a coding strategy when it is used to encode the most relevant vector sources, namely wide sense stationary (WSS), moving average (MA), and autoregressive (AR) vector sources. We also study how the coding strategy considered performs when it is used to encode perturbed versions of those relevant sources. More precisely, we give a sufficient condition for such perturbed versions so that the convergence speed of the rate remains unaltered

Este trabajo estudialas lógicas subyacentesdetrás del manejo de recursos comunes en explotaciones sin límites definidos, proponiendo herramientas de análisis para explotaciones campesinas que presenten rasgos de manejo comunal. Para ellose identificaron los antecedentes conceptuales en torno a los bienes comunes, y luego, mediante un estudio de caso, se analizó cómo funciona un sistema de recursos comunes en la práctica. Se concluye en que detrás de la mera presencia de ciertos recursos de uso común, existen lógicas comunales que eventualmente pueden llegar a ser profundizadas hacia sistemas comunales consolidados, cuyas características resultan especialmente adecuadas para las explotaciones campesinas
