Interprocess data transfer in ATLAS, a platform for distributed applications
The ATLAS platform strives to make several useful but technically involved mechanisms available to the programmer
building applications over it with the least possible effort. These mechanisms include network distribution of cooperating
processes, a powerful macro language, a journaling system and fault tolerance in the presence of network failures or node
crashes. In this paper we discuss the techniques used in ATLAS to implement data transfer over a network between
different machines with the least hassle to the programmer.Postprint (published version
In this paper, we analyse the censorship in the first Spanish translations of Plato and Aristophanes' works. We compare them with translations into other European languages
The Procne´s Métis. On Aeschylus' Supplices 57-65
At the beginning of Aeschylus' Supplices, the choir of Danaids alludes briefly to the Tereus and Procne's myth. The text, ambiguous syntactically, has been interpreted in different ways. Our proposal bases on a meticulous analysis of metis, key word of the passage, that compares both mythic stories, the crime of Danaus' daughters and that of Tereus' wife
Private epitaphs are an interesting source of information to understand the ideas of the ancient Greeks on soul and its destiny after death. The fourth century B.C. is an important point of infl ection on this complex subject. As the historical perspective is essential in this kind of studies, we refl ect on these pages about two epigraphic texts from this period, so far overlooked, that show the ways in which in the fourth century BC there is no normative thought on this subject. Similarlily, expressions alluding to the separation of soul and body, frequent in later times, had not yet become cliché.
(CEG I, 97)
The study of Attic grave-reliefs from the Classical period can be of great interest as a source of information about the relationships between gender, age and social class in Ancient Greece. This essay analyses an epigram devoted to a deceased woman by a female friend. The use of hetaira in this text has triggered some interpretations -misleading, in my opinion- of the two women being prostitutes
Comunicació presentada al 23rd International Congress on Project Management and Engineering (Málaga, 10-12 July 2019).An effective Circular Economy strategy comprises demonstrate practical application, by including real life examples and emphasizing with data and facts. The communication strategy is addressed during the design process and designers have to think about the product/service and about how communicating it. To reach a broader impact, techniques like creative storytelling or educational messages are needed. This work aims to know the ease or difficulty for industrial design engineering students in the application of these techniques to effectively communicate the advantages of a design based in the Circular Economy. To address this, a workshop has been done to explain basic notions about circular economy and consumptions patterns and trends. Then, communication techniques were explained, using examples. The workshop proceeded asking the students to apply these techniques for emphasizing the advantages of a circular product, working in groups. Finally, a questionnaire was passed to evaluate their opinion about the communication techniques applied. At the end, a debate was conducted about their perception about the importance of communication in designs based in circular economy.
A Software Radio Challenge Accelerating Education and Innovation in Wireless Communications
This Innovative Practice Full Paper presents our methodology and tools for
introducing competition in the electrical engineering curriculum to accelerate
education and innovation in wireless communications. Software radio or
software-defined radio (SDR) enables wireless technology, systems and standards
education where the student acts as the radio developer or engineer. This is
still a huge endeavor because of the complexity of current wireless systems and
the diverse student backgrounds. We suggest creating a competition among
student teams to potentiate creativity while leveraging the SDR development
methodology and open-source tools to facilitate cooperation. The proposed
student challenge follows the European UEFA Champions League format, which
includes a qualification phase followed by the elimination round or playoffs.
The students are tasked to build an SDR transmitter and receiver following the
guidelines of the long-term evolution standard. The metric is system
performance. After completing this course, the students will be able to (1)
analyze alternative radio design options and argue about their benefits and
drawbacks and (2) contribute to the evolution of wireless standards. We discuss
our experiences and lessons learned with particular focus on the suitability of
the proposed teaching and evaluation methodology and conclude that competition
in the electrical engineering classroom can spur innovation.Comment: Frontiers in Education 2018 (FIE 2018
