Knowledge and specialised trades in the late antique West: medicine vs engineering

    Get PDF
The high degree of specialisation achieved in the Roman world covered a vast area of trades and reached beyond economy and production into specialised knowledge and science, but in the transition to the Middle Ages large parts of this knowledge were lost. The continuity and end of some specialised trades which were common in the early Empire but which were rare (or disappeared) in late Antiquity can be seen through the material and written record. In this paper, we aim to explain the divergent evolution of two such professions (medics and engineers) in the western provinces, adding more examples and further case-studies to current debates. Whereas medics and medicine continued as a profession, in part through the protection of the Church, specialised engineers and architects (which were usually linked to state training and employment) seem to have disappeared, together with the state structures that supported them

7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, 25 references.-- Publicado en el capítulo: Session 1: Isolation, Fractionation, and Characterization.-- Humic Substances in the Aquatic and Terrestrial Environment, Proceedings of an International Symposium, celebrado del 21-23, agosto, 1989 en Linköping, Suecia.-- Este volumen 33, referido en la Citación, consta de 514 páginas, 150 figuras y 57 tablas. It is suggested that the striking structural changes introduced in humic substances by reduction with diborane may be useful in studying the role of carboxyl groups in the behaviour of these substances in flash pyrolysis. In the preliminary results shown in this communication, pyrograms of two fulvic acids of different origins and the corresponding diborane reduced substances are compared. It was found that the diborane reduction was responsible for both qualitative and quantitative changes in the pyrolytic patterns of the fulvic acids. These patterns feflect the changes in the reactivity and structural stability of the fulvic materials caused by the disappearance of the carboxyl groups.Peer reviewe

6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, 29 references. The presence of aggregates of humic substances (HS) with inorganic adsorbates in a lagoon located in Huelva (south Spain) is reported. The chemical nature of the fulvic acid (FA) fraction, extracted from the natural aggregate by treatment with chelating resins, has been investigated by physical and chemical methods. The results suggest that these FA are similar to FA from other aquatic environments. As revealed by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopies and mild oxidation with potassium persulfate, the FA contain predominantly in their structure polysaccharides and components derived from lignin.Peer Reviewe

Performance comparison of large-area SiPM arrays suitable for gamma ray detectors

[EN] The use of photosensors of the type Silicon Photomultpliers (SiPM) has widely been extended in recent years for multiple applications in both research and industry. However, there is a lack of comparative studies of different SiPMs under the same conditions, making it difficult to choose the most appropriate one for a specific application. SiPM arrays are suitable for gamma rays detectors, especially when covering large active areas. They are used either in clinical or pre-clinical scenarios, constituting Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanners, or just gamma cameras. The current work presents, for the first time, a comparative study between SensL, Hamamatsu Photonics and KETEK arrays of 12 x 12 SiPMs, with individual active areas of 3 mm x 3 mm, thus covering a total active area of about 5 cm x 5 cm. In this study, we have first evaluated their bias and temperature dependencies, resulting in a very similar behaviour with just a slightly larger dependency of the tested Hamamatsu parts. We also report the performance of detector blocks based on these three SiPM arrays, when coupled to pixelated crystal arrays and monolithic scintillators, in terms of photon impact estimation accuracy, as well as energy resolution. In the case of the monolithic crystals, also the depth of interaction resolution was determined. Both monolithic and pixelated blocks are nowadays widely used in academia or are commercially available for molecular imaging systems. The results obtained for the three SiPM arrays when using those crystals, are comparable, without observing any significant different among them. This project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (grant agreement No 695536). Hydrogen incorporation and crystallization of nanocrystalline silicon deposited by electron cyclotron resonance plasmas

The archival version of this work was published in J. Electrochem. Soc.146.5, (1999): 1966-1970.Nanocrystalline silicon layers have been deposited by electron cyclotron resonance chemical vapor deposition from silane as precursor. Although hydrogen was not deliberately introduced in the plasma it was incorporated in the grown layers as evidenced by the presence of a main infrared absorption band around 2100 cm21 with a shoulder at 2000 cm21. This suggests that most of the hydrogen is bonded to internal surfaces of microcavities instead of isolated Si–H bonds. In the first few hundreds, ,500 Å, of deposited layers, the estimated hydrogen concentration is rather low, below 5 atom %, and increases strongly for larger thicknesses. Solid phase crystallization at ,11008C occurs in thin layers close to the substrates in which the hydrogen concentration is below a certain critical value of ,5 atom

    Get PDF
The aim of this research was to carry out a systematic review of the existing scientific information on job satisfaction as perceived by workers or professionals in sports organisations. This systematic review followed the considerations established by Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The present systematic review included published research papers whose subject matter was related to the job satisfaction of the worker or professional in the field of sport and especially in municipal sports services. After an initial papers analysis of 168 articles, we excluded those that did not meet the inclusion criteria (n = 147); thereby, we obtained the final selection of 18 articles. The results of this study seem to indicate that the job satisfaction of workers or professionals in sports organisations is fairly moderate and that there may also be differences depending on gender, type of work and the sector (public or private) to which they belong. Furthermore, the results analysed in this systematic review show that there is no uniformity in the evaluation systems for measuring workers' job satisfaction.
