Palabras clave: MOTIVACIÓN. ABSTRACT The professional motivation is considered a result of unconscious motivational efforts, and is predetermined since early childhood by the mechanism of identification. The professional motivation is believed to be an invariable formation of the personality, therefore it is, as J. Ken states, about choosing the most suitable people for a certain profession, taking into account people's individual traits. The design used in the following research is descriptive-retrospective type, aimed at knowing the relation between motivation for the Nursing Specialty, professional orientation, retention and promotion in second year Nursing students CSIPJ Medical School, 1st. Semester, course 2004-2005. The universe consisted of 335 students on the pedagogical new-model course of the Nursing Specialty who were surveyed. MINED and CSIPJ represented the highest percentage of Nursing students' insertion into the new pedagogical model. The students' liking the profession was evident. There was relation between the retention and promotion rates, which are considered acceptable in spite of the program of professional orientation and vocational formation in the course of comprehensive self-improvement, not having the tools. The motivation for the Nursing Specialty positively influenced the academic results. It was recommended to develop a program of professional orientation addressed to courses on comprehensive Self-Improvement, as wel as developing, by tutor professors, a program of vocational reaffirmation to be applied to Nursing Specialty. Resumen del póster presentado a la Conferencia: FASEB SRC: Liver Biology: Fundamental Mechanisms and Translational Applications, celebrada en Keystone-Colorado (US) del 6 al 11 de julio de 2014.[Background and Aims: Accumulation evidence links obesity-induced inflammation as an important contributor to the induction of insulin resistance. Moreover, insulin resistance plays a key role in the pathophysiology of obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes and non alcoholic fatty liver disease. Cyclooxygenase-1 and -2 catalyze the first step in prostanoid biosynthesis. Since adult hepatocytes fail to induce COX-2 expression regardless of the pro-inflammatory factors used, we have evaluated whether this lack of expression under mild pro-inflammatory conditions might constitute a permissive condition for the onset of insulin resistance. [Methods]: We evaluated the role of COX-2 expression in hepatocytes in a model of insulin resistance and altered energy homeostasis induced by high fat diet by metabolic parameters in transgenic mice constitutively expressing human COX-2 in hepatocytes. [Results]: COX-2 expression in hepatocytes protects from high fat diet-induced hepatic steatosis, obesity and hence insulin resistance, as demonstrated by a decreased hepatic steatosis, adiposity and adipocyte area, an enhanced insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, decreased plasmatic and hepatic triglycerides and free fatty acids levels, increased adiponectin/leptin ratio and decreased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. COX-2 transgenic mice exhibited increased whole body energy expenditure and fatty acid oxidation. Moreover, when hepatic insulin signaling was analyzed, an increase in insulin receptor-mediated Akt phosphorylation was found in hCOX-2 transgenic mice. Similar results were obtained in human and murine hepatic cells expressing a COX-2 transgene. [Conclusion]: Constitutively expression of COX-2 in hepatocytes protects against adiposity, inflammation and hepatic insulin resistance in mice under high fat diet.Peer Reviewe

Nitrogen-carbon graphite-like semiconductor synthesized from uric acid

    Get PDF
A new carbon-nitrogen organic semiconductor has been synthesized by pyrolysis of uric acid. This layered carbon-nitrogen material contains imidazole-, pyridine (naphthyridine)- and graphitic-like nitrogen, as evinced by infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. Quantum chemistry calculations support that it would consist of a 2D polymeric material held together by hydrogen bonds. Layers are stacked with an interplanar distance between 3.30 and 3.36 Å, as in graphite and coke. Terahertz spectroscopy shows a behavior similar to that of amorphous carbons, such as coke, with non-interacting layers. This material features substantial differences from polymeric carbon nitride, with some characteristics closer to those of nitrogen-doped graphene, in spite of its higher nitrogen content. The direct optical band gap, dependent on the polycondensation temperature, ranges from 2.10 to 2.32 eV. Although in general the degree of crystallinity is low, in the material synthesized at 600 °C some spots with a certain degree of crystallinity can be found

Energy Estimation of Cosmic Rays with the Engineering Radio Array of the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) is part of the Pierre Auger Observatory and is used to detect the radio emission of cosmic-ray air showers. These observations are compared to the data of the surface detector stations of the Observatory, which provide well-calibrated information on the cosmic-ray energies and arrival directions. The response of the radio stations in the 30 to 80 MHz regime has been thoroughly calibrated to enable the reconstruction of the incoming electric field. For the latter, the energy deposit per area is determined from the radio pulses at each observer position and is interpolated using a two-dimensional function that takes into account signal asymmetries due to interference between the geomagnetic and charge-excess emission components. The spatial integral over the signal distribution gives a direct measurement of the energy transferred from the primary cosmic ray into radio emission in the AERA frequency range. We measure 15.8 MeV of radiation energy for a 1 EeV air shower arriving perpendicularly to the geomagnetic field. This radiation energy -- corrected for geometrical effects -- is used as a cosmic-ray energy estimator. Performing an absolute energy calibration against the surface-detector information, we observe that this radio-energy estimator scales quadratically with the cosmic-ray energy as expected for coherent emission. We find an energy resolution of the radio reconstruction of 22% for the data set and 17% for a high-quality subset containing only events with at least five radio stations with signal.Comment: Replaced with published version. Background Scabies is a neglected tropical disease of the skin, causing severe itching, stigmatizing skin lesions and systemic complications. Since 2015, the DerMalawi project provide an integrated skin diseases clinics and Tele-dermatology care in Malawi. Clinic based data suggested a progressive increase in scabies cases observed. To better identify and treat individuals with scabies in the region, we shifted from a clinic-based model to a community based outreach programme. Methodology/principal findings From May 2015, DerMalawi project provide integrated skin diseases and Tele-dermatological care in the Nkhotakota and Salima health districts in Malawi. Demographic and clinical data of all patients personally attended are recorded. Due to a progressive increase in the number of cases of scabies the project shifted to a community-based outreach programme. For the community outreach activities, we conducted three visits between 2018 to 2019 and undertook screening in schools and villages of Alinafe Hospital catchment area. Treatment was offered for all the cases and school or household contacts. Scabies increased from 2.9% to 39.2% of all cases seen by the DerMalawi project at clinics between 2015 to 2018. During the community-based activities approximately 50% of the population was assessed in each of three visits. The prevalence of scabies was similar in the first two rounds, 15.4% (2392) at the first visit and 17.2% at the second visit. The prevalence of scabies appeared to be lower (2.4%) at the third visit. The prevalence of impetigo appeared unchanged and was 6.7% at the first visit and 5.2% at the final visit. Conclusions/significance Prevalence of scabies in our setting was very high suggesting that scabies is a major public health problem in parts of Malawi. Further work is required to more accurately assess the burden of disease and develop appropriate public health strategies for its control

[Purpose]: The aim of this study was to analyse the characteristics of patients with IE in three groups of age and to assess the ability of age and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) to predict mortality. [Methods]: Prospective cohort study of all patients with IE included in the GAMES Spanish database between 2008 and 2015.Patients were stratified into three age groups:<65 years,65 to 80 years,and ≥ 80 years.The area under the receiver-operating characteristic (AUROC) curve was calculated to quantify the diagnostic accuracy of the CCI to predict mortality risk. [Results]: A total of 3120 patients with IE (1327 < 65 years;1291 65-80 years;502 ≥ 80 years) were enrolled.Fever and heart failure were the most common presentations of IE, with no differences among age groups.Patients ≥80 years who underwent surgery were significantly lower compared with other age groups (14.3%,65 years; 20.5%,65-79 years; 31.3%,≥80 years). In-hospital mortality was lower in the <65-year group (20.3%,<65 years;30.1%,65-79 years;34.7%,≥80 years;p < 0.001) as well as 1-year mortality (3.2%, <65 years; 5.5%, 65-80 years;7.6%,≥80 years; p = 0.003).Independent predictors of mortality were age ≥ 80 years (hazard ratio [HR]:2.78;95% confidence interval [CI]:2.32–3.34), CCI ≥ 3 (HR:1.62; 95% CI:1.39–1.88),and non-performed surgery (HR:1.64;95% CI:11.16–1.58).When the three age groups were compared, the AUROC curve for CCI was significantly larger for patients aged <65 years(p < 0.001) for both in-hospital and 1-year mortality. [Conclusion]: There were no differences in the clinical presentation of IE between the groups. Age ≥ 80 years, high comorbidity (measured by CCI),and non-performance of surgery were independent predictors of mortality in patients with IE.CCI could help to identify those patients with IE and surgical indication who present a lower risk of in-hospital and 1-year mortality after surgery, especially in the <65-year group
