This paper presents the outcomes of a diagnostic study applied to a sample of Junior High School principals. Such diagnosis is aimed to characterize their performance to direct the teaching-learning process. Therefore, two dimensions were considered: the principals´ general preparation for the teaching-learning process institutional management and their performance to direct the processes that are comprised in such management. As a result, this study laid open the principals´ limited knowledge on the national educative policy foundations, according to the peculiarities of Junior High School. Likewise, the principals showed a scarce knowledge on conceptual and theoretical components of the teaching-learning process at this level. At he same time, they evidenced difficulties in applying the official document that rules the methodological work. Also, some limitations were identified in the principals´ performance to direct the systematic diagnosis of the directive staff and teachers in order to guide the formative process and methodological work. Finally, the greatest potentiality was identified in the organizational assurance and setting conditions to successfully carry out the teaching-learning process.

The growth of the responsibility of the school directors, in the context of the change that impacts the educational systems in the last five years, has generated the need of their greater implication in the conduction of the educational processes that take place in the school institution, in particular , the teaching-learning, and has led to a recognition, increasingly growing; of the existence of an institutional direction of the teaching-learning process, referring to its professional management activity, whose essential content is to ensure the institutional conditions for this process to be effective, among them the informational one The information and especially the relevance that it offers is an essential premise to achieve it; the habit of capturing valuable information, processing it, making sense of it, using it and distributing it is the responsibility of the managers in the first instance. This work aims to assess the importance of information, which as an input in the institutional direction of the teaching-learning process the school director must manage; from the attention to two specific processes: a) the examination of the guidelines of the national educational policy and b) the analysis and systematic follow-up of the results of the integral diagnosis of the school institution, so that, with the assurance to other concurrent processes, guarantee its continuous improvement.

Efficient multicomponent synthesis of diverse antibacterial embelin-privileged structure conjugates

A library of embelin derivatives has been synthesized through a multicomponent reaction from embelin (1), aldehydes and privileged structures such as 4-hydroxycoumarin, 4-hydroxy-2H-pyran-2-one and 2-naphthol, in the presence of InCl3 as catalyst. This multicomponent reaction implies Knoevenagel condensation, Michael addition, intramolecular cyclization and dehydration. Many of the synthesized compounds were active and selective against Gram-positive bacteria, including one important multiresistant Staphylococcus aureus clinical isolate. It was found how the conjugation of diverse privileged substructure with embelin led to adducts having enhanced antibacterial activities.Fil: Martín Acosta, Pedro. Universidad de La Laguna. Negative Regulation of Abscisic Acid Signaling by the Fagus sylvatica FsPP2C1 Plays A Role in Seed Dormancy Regulation and Promotion of Seed Germination

FsPP2C1 was previously isolated from beech (Fagus sylvatica) seeds as a functional protein phosphatase type-2C (PP2C) with all the conserved features of these enzymes and high homology to ABI1, ABI2, and PP2CA, PP2Cs identified as negative regulators of ABA signaling. The expression of FsPP2C1 was induced upon abscisic acid (ABA) treatment and was also up-regulated during early weeks of stratification. Furthermore, this gene was specifically expressed in ABA-treated seeds and was hardly detectable in vegetative tissues. In this report, to provide genetic evidence on FsPP2C1 function in seed dormancy and germination, we used an overexpression approach in Arabidopsis because transgenic work is not feasible in beech. Constitutive expression of FsPP2C1 under the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter confers ABA insensitivity in Arabidopsis seeds and, consequently, a reduced degree of seed dormancy. Additionally, transgenic 35S:FsPP2C1 plants are able to germinate under unfavorable conditions, as inhibitory concentrations of mannitol, NaCl, or paclobutrazol. In vegetative tissues, Arabidopsis FsPP2C1 transgenic plants show ABA-resistant early root growth and diminished induction of the ABA-response genes RAB18 and KIN2, but no effect on stomatal closure regulation. Seed and vegetative phenotypes of Arabidopsis 35S:FsPP2C1 plants suggest that FsPP2C1 negatively regulates ABA signaling. The ABA inducibility of FsPP2C1 expression, together with the transcript accumulation mainly in seeds, suggest that it could play an important role modulating ABA signaling in beechnuts through a negative feedback loop. Finally, we suggest that negative regulation of ABA signaling by FsPP2C1 is a factor contributing to promote the transition from seed dormancy to germination during early weeks of stratification

Materials Science Toolkit for Carbon Footprint Assessment: A Case Study for Endoscopic Accessories of Common Use

[EN] Ironically, healthcare systems are key agents in respiratory-related diseases and estimated deaths because of the high impact of their greenhouse gas emissions, along with industry, transportation, and housing. Based on safety requirements, hospitals and related services use an extensive number of consumables, most of which end up incinerated at the end of their life cycle. A thorough assessment of the carbon footprint of such devices typically requires knowing precise information about the manufacturing process, rarely available in detail because of the many materials, pieces and steps involved during the fabrication. And yet, tools most often used for determining the environmental impact of consumer goods just require a bunch of parameters, mainly based on the material composition of the device. Here we report a basic set of analytical methods that provide the information required by the software OpenLCA to calculate the main outcome related to environmental impact, the greenhouse gas emissions. Through thermogravimetry, calorimetry, infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis we proved that obtaining relevant data for the calculator in the exemplifying case of endoscopy tooling or accessories is possible. This routine procedure opens the door to a broader, more accurate analysis of the environmental impact of everyday work at hospital services, offering potential alternatives to minimize it.This study has been funded by Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) through the project PI21/00193 and cofunded by the European Union. This book digs into an area of international migration studies that has gained prominence in the past couple of decades: migrant smuggling. The regional focus is southern Europe, which receives immigrants from many African and Asian countries. Migrant smuggling is discussed in relation to EU and national policies, aimed at combating irregular migration, including increased surveillance and border controls. The authors are no newcomers to the field. Anna Triandafyllidou is a leading scholar in migration studies, having published extensively on various topics dealing with migration in Europe, and with a special interest in Greece and southern Europe. Thanos Maroukis, on the other hand, is an early career academic whose publications have focused specifically on migration in Greece. It is, therefore, not surprising that the authors approached this topic of migrant smuggling from Africa and Asia to Europe by focusing mainly on the situation in Greece and the Turkish-Greek route. The book is based on fieldwork, participant observation and interviews conducted in Athens. The empirical material is extensive, covering a broad range of actors.peer-reviewe

Magnetic fields in M dwarfs from the CARMENES survey

M dwarfs are known to generate the strongest magnetic fields among main-sequence stars with convective envelopes, but the link between the magnetic fields and underlying dynamo mechanisms, rotation, and activity still lacks a consistent picture. In this work we measure magnetic fields from the high-resolution near-infrared spectra taken with the CARMENES radial-velocity planet survey in a sample of 29 active M dwarfs and compare our results against stellar parameters. We use the state-of-the-art radiative transfer code to measure total magnetic flux densities from the Zeeman broadening of spectral lines and filling factors. We detect strong kG magnetic fields in all our targets. In 16 stars the magnetic fields were measured for the first time. Our measurements are consistent with the magnetic field saturation in stars with rotation periods P<4d. The analysis of the magnetic filling factors reveal two different patterns of either very smooth distribution or a more patchy one, which can be connected to the dynamo state of the stars and/or stellar mass. Our measurements extend the list of M dwarfs with strong surface magnetic fields. They also allow us to better constrain the interplay between the magnetic energy, stellar rotation, and underlying dynamo action. The high spectral resolution and observations at near-infrared wavelengths are the beneficial capabilities of the CARMENES instrument that allow us to address important questions about the stellar magnetism.Comment: 13 pages of main text, 14 pages of online material, 2 table
