    Improving Optical Character Recognition Accuracy for Cargo Container Identification Numbers

    Optical character recognition (OCR) software currently being used at radiation portal monitor (RPM) sites to read cargo container identification numbers is expected to produce 90% accuracy when the containers meet ISO Standard 6346: 1995, Freight containers – Coding, identification, and marking. One of the RPM seaport sites was reporting low OCR accuracy results, prompting a request to fix the problem. A data analysis conducted at the site determined overall accuracy was only at 68% (69% for nighttime and 62% for daytime) with poor image quality in both day and night conditions being the primary factor in low OCR accuracy. Nighttime image quality was primarily impacted by inadequate lighting. After conducting several tests to find the appropriate lighting, a new lighting configuration was implemented at the site that included using higher wattage light fixtures and placing the light fixtures closer to the target. This improved overall nighttime OCR accuracy from 69% to 87%. Daytime image quality was primarily impacted by the sun. Placing the cameras at different angles and adding cameras to obtain more images of the containers have the potential for improving daytime OCR accuracy. No changes were made at the site to improve daytime OCR

    The eclipsing low-mass X-ray binary 4U is the prototypical accretion disk corona (ADC) system. We have obtained new time-resolved UV spectrograms of 4U with the Hubble Space Telescope and new V- and J-band light curves with the 1.3-m SMARTS telescope at CTIO. We present an updated ephemeris for the times of the optical/UV eclipses.     Reachability analysis for AWS-based networks

    Cloud services provide the ability to provision virtual networked infrastructure on demand over the Internet. The rapid growth of these virtually provisioned cloud networks has increased the demand for automated reasoning tools capable of identifying misconfigurations or security vulnerabilities. This type of automation gives customers the assurance they need to deploy sensitive workloads. It can also reduce the cost and time-to-market for regulated customers looking to establish compliance certification for cloud-based applications. In this industrial case-study, we describe a new network reachability reasoning tool, called Tiros, that uses off-the-shelf automated theorem proving tools to fill this need. Tiros is the foundation of a recently introduced network security analysis feature in the Amazon Inspector service now available to millions of customers building applications in the cloud. Tiros is also used within Amazon Web Services (AWS) to automate the checking of compliance certification and adherence to security invariants for many AWS services that build on existing AWS networking features

    The Structure of the Accretion Disk in the ADC X-Ray Binary 4U 1822-371 at Optical and Ultraviolet Wavelengths

    The eclipsing low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1822-371 is the prototypical accretion disk corona (ADC) system. We have obtained new time-resolved UV spectroscopy of 4U 1822-371 with the Advanced Camera for Surveys/Solar Blind Channel (ACS/SBC) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and new V- and J-band photometry with the 1.3-m SMARTS telescope at CTIO. We use the new data to construct its UV/optical spectral energy distribution and its orbital light curve in the UV, V, and J bands. We derive an improved ephemeris for the optical eclipses and confirm that the orbital period is changing rapidly, indicating extremely high rates of mass flow in the system; and we show that the accretion disk in the system has a strong wind with projected velocities up to 4000 km/s. We show that the disk has a vertically-extended, optically-thick component at optical wavelengths.This component extends almost to the edge of the disk and has a height equal to ~0.5 of the disk radius. As it has a low brightness temperature, we identify it as the optically-thick base of a disk wind, not as the optical counterpart of the ADC. Like previous models of 4U 1822-371, ours needs a tall obscuring wall near the edge of the accretion disk, but we interpret the wall as a layer of cooler material at the base of the disk wind, not as a tall, luminous disk rim.Comment: 37 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Ap

    The Origins of Lactase Persistence in Europe

    Lactase persistence (LP) is common among people of European ancestry, but with the exception of some African, Middle Eastern and southern Asian groups, is rare or absent elsewhere in the world. Lactase gene haplotype conservation around a polymorphism strongly associated with LP in Europeans (−13,910 C/T) indicates that the derived allele is recent in origin and has been subject to strong positive selection. Furthermore, ancient DNA work has shown that the −13,910*T (derived) allele was very rare or absent in early Neolithic central Europeans. It is unlikely that LP would provide a selective advantage without a supply of fresh milk, and this has lead to a gene-culture coevolutionary model where lactase persistence is only favoured in cultures practicing dairying, and dairying is more favoured in lactase persistent populations. We have developed a flexible demic computer simulation model to explore the spread of lactase persistence, dairying, other subsistence practices and unlinked genetic markers in Europe and western Asia's geographic space. Using data on −13,910*T allele frequency and farming arrival dates across Europe, and approximate Bayesian computation to estimate parameters of interest, we infer that the −13,910*T allele first underwent selection among dairying farmers around 7,500 years ago in a region between the central Balkans and central Europe, possibly in association with the dissemination of the Neolithic Linearbandkeramik culture over Central Europe. Furthermore, our results suggest that natural selection favouring a lactase persistence allele was not higher in northern latitudes through an increased requirement for dietary vitamin D. Our results provide a coherent and spatially explicit picture of the coevolution of lactase persistence and dairying in Europe

    Spectra of Hydrogen-poor Superluminous Supernovae from the Palomar Transient Factory

    Most Type I superluminous supernovae (SLSNe-I) reported to date have been identified by their high peak luminosities and spectra lacking obvious signs of hydrogen. We demonstrate that these events can be distinguished from normal-luminosity SNe (including Type Ic events) solely from their spectra over a wide range of light-curve phases. We use this distinction to select 19 SLSNe-I and four possible SLSNe-I from the Palomar Transient Factory archive (including seven previously published objects). We present 127 new spectra of these objects and combine these with 39 previously published spectra, and we use these to discuss the average spectral properties of SLSNe-I at different spectral phases. We find that Mn II most probably contributes to the ultraviolet spectral features after maximum light, and we give a detailed study of the O II features that often characterize the early-time optical spectra of SLSNe-I. We discuss the velocity distribution of O II, finding that for some SLSNe-I this can be confined to a narrow range compared to relatively large systematic velocity shifts. Mg II and Fe II favor higher velocities than O II and C II, and we briefly discuss how this may constrain power-source models. We tentatively group objects by how well they match either SN 2011ke or PTF12dam and discuss the possibility that physically distinct events may have been previously grouped together under the SLSN-I label

Genetic studies have identified 163 susceptibility loci for inflammatory bowel disease, mostly shared between Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.     The myth of executive compensation: do shareholders get what they pay for?

    We use compensation data for a sample of 701 US public firms and document a significant positive relation between the level of executive compensation and the subsequent realized stock returns. In present value terms, shareholders in firms incurring a total compensation cost of 78millionabovethemedianexperiencesubsequentincrementalwealthgainsof78 million above the median experience subsequent incremental wealth gains of 385 million above the median over the 5-year period following compensation awards. The results are robust to the use of size and industry-adjusted measures of compensation and returns, and hold after we segment the sample by firm size and industry. Our evidence is consistent with rational executive labour markets where more talented executives command higher compensation and produce superior returns.
